I certainly have no experience but I've heard a lot of good things about it.
For tube preamp In the around or under $2k range I'd also look at:
BAT VK-3ix (http://www.balanced.com/)
VTL TL-2.5 (http://www.vtl.com/pages/preamplifiers.html#TL-2.5) or possibly the 5.5 (http://www.vtl.com/pages/preamplifiers.html#TL-5.5) isn't too far out of range
Audio Research SP-17L (http://www.audioresearch.com/SP17.html)
There's the Odyssey Candela (http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?preatube&1228879374&/Odyssey-Candela), unfortunately not shown at their website (http://www.odysseyaudio.com/products.html)
Or for less dough but with no remote, the Transcedent "Grounded Grid" (http://www.transcendentsound.com/preampkit.htm).
There are the AVA models (http://www.avahifi.com/root/equipment/preamplifier/comparison_grid.htm) as already discussed
Sundry models of European design/Chinese manufacture such as Vincent (http://www.vincent-tac.de/en/product-types/preamplifiers.html), PrmaLuna (http://www.primaluna.nl/products_subpage1a3p.htm)
And ultimate Chinese provinence such as Cayin (http://www.vasindustries.com/Product_Name.asp?Category=26:50:31)

I had the Modwright 9.0. It is a very clean and netural preamp. It is an excellent Pre for under $2k.
I have since upgraded to the ModWright 36.5 PreAmp.

I had the SWLP 9.0SE version. It was very neutral, close to solid state. Nice if like this kind of sound. I think it'll sound better with tube power amp.

I'm curious as to why you made the jump to a much more expensive version of the Modwright preamp...was it a big performance difference or was it a technical advantage like balanced imputs or some connectivity issue? I've been looking at the 9.0 used as a nice step up from my older PV-10a (2-12au7's) nice balanced presentation but a bit on the soft side...

Hey BR,
Are you considering to get a ModWright unit?
If so, which power supply option will you go with? I've been curious of their SWLP, but a used unit in black has been hard to come by.
Have Fun,
JRA
