View Full Version : Sounds Funky

I'll take a page from Slosh's Sounds Good compilation effort and also from Lovin's Blues compilations and attempt a community Funk launch.

Can we get down and dirty and get funky? Old funk, nu-funk, deep funk, ... I don't know. Whatcha got?

I wanna learn some more about this genre, help me out. I put out a funk 'inspired' comp (http://forums.audioreview.com/showthread.php?t=28072) a few weeks back but that pretty much exhausted my repertoire.

Are there willing contributors out there?

Post a link, send me a PM, however you want to work it. I'm willing to compile.

More than one is great. The sounds good compilation was excellent and most contributors had about 3 songs in it. If it ends up being a 2 CD release, all the better. :-)

Quality files is good. Variety is good. Fun is good.

I'll contribute something from a little known funk group called Third Rail featuring James Blood Ulmer on guitar. This is not your normal Earth Wind & Fire / Sly Stone type funk at all but sound quality it has.

PM an addy to send to.

Edit: Bill Laswell on Bass!!!

Thanks HyFi, I managed to get all but Funkadelic. Megaupload says the file is 'temporarily' unavailable. But it been a very long 'temporarily'. Maybe you could put that one up again?

Encouraging further submissions from any and all!

Happy Belated T-Day. This comp took a long time. There were some real nice submissions, some I liked but didn’t think fit, and some I didn’t care for (ah, well). I followed my own muse. I found it challenging to string things together in a flow that stayed interesting. I’ve listened to this a zillion times and finally decided it was done.

Personally, I got to discover Funkadelic, and for those not in the know (as I was…wasn’t?), Funkadelic is essentially the same people as Parliament. I never really cared for Parliament, but am thrilled to find Funkadelic. If anyone has similar recommendations I'd like to know about them.

I cut Dusted by Third Rail despite it being a real nice album (Thanks!). I also really liked the 13+ min Lady by Fela Kuti. It was so enjoyable I didn’t even realize it was so long for quite a while. I kinda regret not putting it in. I’ve always liked Atomic Dog and apologize to those who have to suffer through that new Hotel for Dogs movie and have the listening experience ruined by association.

All in all, I think this is a pretty tidy comp. I could have gone longer but I found it straining my attention. Give a listen. Feed back appreciated. Thanks to all contributers!

This is excellent. Easily one of the ten best of the 200+ I've gotten over the years here at RR. Nice work, guys.

I held off contributing to see if there was enough. I'm tempted to do one on the P-Funk empire. Between the Parliament/Funkadelic albums and Eddie Hazel, Bootsy and Bernie Worrell there would be enough for a 2-disc set but I'd keep it to one. But that would leave out War and Earth, Wind & Fire and Ohio Players and whatever else I have. Just thinking out loud here.

But this one's a keeper. Get it by hook or by crook.

Just for sh<a></a>its and giggles, last night I pulled out my 12"

of "Atomic Dog." It's not the best extended version I've ever heard, but fun nonetheless. I transferred it to a wav file and you can get it here (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=431MHUJ2). It does have a scuff on it toward the beginning of the track, so be warned.

Just grabbed it (except for the Prince and Beastie Boys tracks since I already have them on my hard drive) and am about to make a playlist and give it a spin.

BTW, I started on my 2008 YEC. Put together a quickie yesterday that timed in at 79:54 but I'll probably tweak it some before uploading. I easily have enough to do two CD-Rs without repeating an album but in all honesty haven't listened to all of them enough to know which songs I'd want to use. I was thinking of just upping it in Apple Lossless since that's what I'm using for my SoundBridges (they play ALAC natively) but I suppose it could convert to FLAC if enough people bi<a>tch about it. :D

Hmmm . . . well, an interesting listen but not really my thing. I'll keep it around to see if any of it grows on me but I doubt it will very much. Nevertheless I appreciate the time and effort and the chance to try it out for myself. Hearing music sure as hell beats talking about music :)

Thanks, all (well, almost all) for the high praise. And thanks for all the suggestions on other artists to keep an ear out for.

My personal favorite of this comp has to be Kash Machine. I find it outstanding that this is a high school band! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kashmere_Stage_Band). I lost track of who submitted it but am very curious to know if the release, Kashmere Stage Band - Texas Thunder Soul 1968-1974, is as good.

I'll pimp the download link one more time. Files are available as flac or as an mp3 download. CD's that I put in the mail came back with insufficient postage. Doh. I'll get them back in the mail soon. Sorry for the delay.
