Getting psyched up for next week’s King Crimson show, I started spinning some disks. This morning I played Red on my way to work. I could not help but to notice the awesome precision, timing, and tasteful drumming Bruford does while hitting so many notes.

I really like his style along with other greats like Wekl, Chambers and the likes. Red is from 1974, I was in 7th grade diggin this and had no idea of its lasting over the years. I started to think about bands like The Who, who I never really liked growing up and still don’t like the majority of their music. Everyone always raved about Moon. Maybe he was one of the better parts of the group and yeah, he hit a lot of notes. But, it always seemed like he was in his own little world playing a solo. Playing over his bandmates and lacking the timing and taste of when to hotshot (and still fit in to the tune), and when to lay back.

So what kind of drumming do you prefer? Bass, snare, hi-hat…over and over? Jazzy but fit into rock drums? Or do you not even listen to the drums and let them fade into the background and only pay attention to vocals?

Bruford is simply awesome....I'll take Art Blakey (a la Night in Tunisia), Phile Collins (a la Moroccan Roll) or Klaus Krieger (a la Force Majeure) enny ole day....

So I'm not alone after all.

Collins work for BrandX is another good example. Funny how most people don't even know Collins is a drummer and only know his solo work.

I have a 3-disk comp of Bruford from way back thru Earthworks if that interests you.

That's definitely interesting...! Thank you!! An' now if you excuse me a sec, I'll put on All Heaven Broke Loose jus' now...

BTW: Collins' work for Moroccan Roll was nothing short of superb, IMHO. In fact, the album is a favorite....'Specially when the lights are dim and it's one AM an' nobody aroun' but you an' the amp an' the band...

Bruford's good. Too much snare, and I find his obsession with drum synths in the 80s and 90s to sound REALLY dated and hokey now. It's been well documented that many other musicians find his sense of time to be erratic. I prefer Mastellotto in KC.

Collins was a monster with Brand X. His live duets with Chester the Gorilla were epic.

I like jazz-style players that play in a rock context who work the whole kit. I like the drums upfront. I like bands with multiple drummers/percussionists. I like all the gaps filled. I like off-time fills and syncopation. I like the big boom.

I'm a sucker for Chinese cymbals:

I'm just sayin' is all.

Blue Man Group's "The Complex" is sure to give a boner to any drum freak.

Big boom, a deft sense of syncopation...Yeah, sounds like Blakey! Gotta look into that Chinese drum thing. Thanks for the tip.

i've always been partial to Copland's style and sense of timing.

...Peter Erskine. Well, I know that's debatable, but an acquaintance of mine, Karl Latham, who is an excellent jazz drummer who also trained at the famous Berklee School of Music, felt that Peter was the finest of his generation. Check out this solo from 2004, but keep in mind he was 50 at the time he performed this. The solo starts at about 1:05 in and really heats up past the 2:30 mark.
