In an odd turn of fate, I have just wound up with a new Blu-ray player,
a Sony bdp-s300.
A friend had it for a week, but decided he wanted a Samsung,
instead of taking this back he let me have it , dont have to pay until vacation pay comes it, so no waiting.
Maybe I can get it paid off so I can spend the vacation pay on something else.
Anyway I am really pleased with it, spectacular performance,
Its really a good thing (except for groundbeef) that Sony won the format war, Blu is a really good form factor considering how young the format is.
Was worried about obsolete DVD's after hearing about crappy "upscalling", but sometimes on quality discs the pic is almost as good as HD, in a stained glass scene from the order color and shadow detail was superb.
Even my home brew discs look reallly good.
A question tho, anybody have a prob with the 5.1 out on these players?
No center or sub, although the digital out is really nice what I am hearing of the lossless is grand, but it kinda spoils the show to not be able to hear what they're talking about.
The Samsung my friend got had the same effect, so its not the player.
Anyway, looks like BLOCKBUSTER is gonna be takin my money for awhile:1:

Sorry, can't help you.

I have the Samsung BDP-1200 and no problems for audio except the annoying warning that pops up on the screen saying no audio via HDMI. (using optical in 5.1)

it looks like a hardware fail so its going back.
The center and sub are together so its probably something simple,
like a wire, probably a ground.
BUT I am not breakin it open, just gonna try to get a new one.
Which is crap, because 5.1 lossless was something I was looking foward to.
Anyway my luck is the same, nice to know that some things in life
never change:1:

I had a similar problem with our DVD player, there was no signal from the sub, but that turned out to be a wrong preset in the receiver (dunno exactly what anymore, but it's solved now...)

hope it gets fixed... and hopefully for free, that is :D

center and sub are on the same DAC (unless you have separate DAC's for every channel...), but since you're not using the analog signals, the DAC does pretty much nothing...

Keep them spinning,
Bert.

The center and sub are together so I figure its a bad ground or something.

that's a pretty bold statement. have you ever seen an HD-DVD? they looked pretty much exactly the same, the quality of the encoding usually being the deciding factor in which format looked better.

NOTHING BOLD ABOUT IT.
HD was a pretty picture, sure, but so was the stillborn format based
on WMA that you had to watch on a computer, I HAD a couple of those, and they were nice too.
But HD was cobbled together by the marketing dept, and like everything tosh does, was half-assed.
It was based on old tech so you could use older disc pressing plants,
etc, the storage of BLU is a great deal more, and Blu is really an evolution of the DVD format.
A format is more than just a cobbled together bunch of junk, you need robust players, media that will play consistently, even QC, etc
HD wasnt ready for prime time, and itosh paid the price, as did their customers, which is what tosh customers usually do, pay for tosh's
pathetic engineering efforts.
Sure the quality is a bit uneven, but that is always the case with anything, Mr and mrs smith looked rather pedestrian, CASINO ROYALE was jaw dropping, the BEST scene I have ever had the pleasure of lookin at, the check-in scene, BOND and his lady are wearing black, the clerk is wearing black, and there is a rich texture
in the blacks, simply amazing.
But the important thing is that movie lovers can more foward now,
there are quite a few titles under 20 bucks, and players will be hitting the stores this christmas.
YOU HD FANBOYS need to give it a rest, you lost, your format is DEAD DEAD DEAD DEAD.
You need to move on, the rest of the world did:1:

Your world is a very strange place.

Have you seen a rabbit with a watch?
Rabbit? What rabbit? I see no rabbit. Would you like to join our tea party?

My world is the real world, I took the right color pill.
You need to stay in that stupor that is a remmnant of you hippie daze,
you cant handle a sidereal universe, the one you've cobbled together in your brain is probably more of a comfort to you.
Just because I refuse to accomodate you HD types who wasted
your money betting, against all evidence , on a doomed format doesnt me a bad guy, I just refuse to live in your fantasy world.
Socialism, communism, Nazism, and ANYTHING made by Toshiba
just wont work, goes against the fundamental laws of nature.

pixx i'm no HD fanboy, but the better format didnt win.

HD-DVDs were better for the consumer, Bluray for the corporations.

and how can you say HD-DVD was half baked??? look at the player rollout for Bluray, wtf is with v1.1, v1.2 and v2.0, which rendered the first 2 formats virtually useless, forcing many early adopters to buy NEW players to replace ones that were less than a year old just so they could access all of the special features on their discs.

how is that better? how was that "more than just a cobbled together bunch of junk" ?

or "media that will play consistently" ?

but whatever, i'm beating a dead horse here, Bluray won, i have a ton of Bluray movies and i watch them in 1080p and they're amazing.
