I was watching movies recently and got to thinkin' (no jokes Kam)... I've always loved monster movies and horror... I asked myself and now you..."what monster scares you the most" and why??? My list is as follows:

1. Zombies - I don't know after Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" flesh, brain eating Zombies have always given me the willies... "28 Days Later" damn sure didn't help either... Of course with the ratcheting up of special effects in the last 20 years Zombies are more gruesome than ever... wow... what a ride...

2. Certain Vampires - NOT the romantic Frank Langella vampires,... I'm talking the "Nosferatu" and "Salem's Lot" rat faced Vampires... the scene when ole Fang Face rises straight out of the coffin in Nosferatu scared the s**t out of me and still does....

3. Aliens... - A nightmare however you slice it... scary as all get out. They gestate inside you and burst from your chest and drip acid for blood... yipes...

4. Werewolves - Not the Lon Chaney puppy dog kind... I'm talking "The Howling" and "Dog Soldiers" werewolves... nasty, tall, strong and unstoppable werewolves... That's why I don't own a dog to this day... (just kidding.... I'm allergic to em)...

What do you folks think? What makes you sweat in the night?

sad though it is, no spfx monster can be made that's scarier than us humans.

Buffalo Bill scared the hell out of me... "put the lotion in the basket"

on a lighter note...
Ghosts/devils generally do it when they take over us humans.

The twins standing at the end of the hallyway in shining... "come play with us danny" instant chills.
Good 'ol lil Regan, "you're mother's in here karras, would you like to leave a message?"
That wicked nanny in omen, "have no fear little one"
That politician in The Dead Zone... one button away if walken doesn't off him... that's scary...

I guess the scariest things are those closest to ourselves... sure aliens are scary, but that's a HUGE "what if", Buffalo Bill could be living next door to you, in comparison, that's a reasonable "what if". Now THAT'S scary.

Ya know what scares me the most is movies where the plot involves alternate reallities and psychological thrills like IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS. This movie is a couple of years old but it is probably the scariest movie I have seen. I also enjoyed the Lord of Illusions.

1. My 17 year old daughter behind the wheel
2.Headlights zooming into my rear view mirror on the highway at 2am,
when I'm already doin 70....

The first Halloween movie still gives me the creeps. Not quite as much
"supernatural" BS as in the later movies. I mean, what if MM was just on PCP or something, made it seem like it could really happen....

Probably my two favorite "horror" movies are Jaws and Alien, and I think I know why. The films are actually quite similar in many ways. Jaws followed a certain formula in its plot where it would alternate between relaxation/humor and the sudden onslaught of "Bruce". It was a brilliant formula that caught you offguard. They'd be in the cabin talking and joking about war wounds and you'd get caught up in the story and forget about their location. Then Bruce starts pounding the boat into splinters.

That's the kind of manipulation I enjoy in a movie. I want to be caught off-guard. I like the unexpected. I hate the predictable.

After the tension of getting back to the spaceship and finding their assaulted companion apparently recovering, the crew relaxes around the dining room table and suddenly the little rascal makes his violent appearance. Supposedly, even the actors didn't know what to expect with that special effect, so the look of horror on THEIR faces was pretty genuine.

I watched a documentary on the making of all the Alien movies. In the first the director didn't tell the other actors what was going to happen to John Hurt. They didn't know about the chest burster at all. Their reactions.. particularly Yaphet Koto's was completely first take and unrehearsed. He's lucky they didn't run or smash the little alien to pieces. I know I would have stood there saying "what the f**k" over and over...

Here are couple of movies that still scare me:

The Exorcist:The multiple persons speaking thru the young girl, and the freezing room where everybody's breath is visible gave this movie a horrific feeling.

Evil Dead:Made only with a budget of $375,000, the "low budget" look actually helped make this movie an scary one.

I vote for the "psycho thrillers" which dont star any alien or ghost - the scariest are the Humans themselves - I agree on that one.

I think a very gripping and scary movie was the "Sixth Sense" by Night Shyamalan - the way the kid sees and reacts so matter of fact to all ghosts around him - its just too cool.

Then there's the "Omen" series.

I dont vote for Evil dead (specially the sequels - they look like comedies) and neither for the "Nightmare on Elm street" sequels - though a couple of them have some grip.

The movies mentioned that I have seen are good! Alien, Jaws, I might add Signs w Mel Gibson was good.
I have Never been as Scared as I was when I saw The Exorist in '74 I think it came out. I heared it was good but I didn't even know what it ment Exorism. I remember going home and my sences were soo tweeked I could hear a moth fly...and that Scared me!! and my buddies were scared too! I remember this black girl with her mom in front of us...they would scream and hide under their coats!! *laughing* and this was early in the movie when Linda Blair was just Acting up a bit.....they left before things Really got going!!!
Funny now but it was Real at the time!!
No Contest!!!

Without a doubt the creepiest, most evil character was Ring's Sadako. The moment wen she crawls out of the TV and proceeds to stumble over to the victim is in my opinion the scariest moment in any horror film.

Felt the American version was one of the sacriest movies I've ever seen. Recommended it here on the old board quite vociferously.. Never rented "Ringu" should I? I'd really like the opinion of someone who's seen both..

I saw the Japaneese version before the American one so i sort of knew what was going to happen in the remake. Both films are quite scarey but i think that the origional has the edge. From the strange screeching violins in the rear speakers to the wafts of ambient bass the sound effects are quite chilling.
Sadako is a lot more gruesome in the origional also quite a bit older, perhaps 18.
If that isnt reason enough to watch the origional then here is another one, You can then watch ring 2 and ring 0 the prequal both good chilling films.
