Many of us already have a PS3 or plan on getting one soon. I figured I'd start a thread to discuss all things PS3. Games, Playstation Network, Downloads, Updates, Settings, BR, Themes......You get the point.

T - minus 30 days for mine...we can start by telling Kex which model/version has the best inner goodies, or package deal or whatever...

Good idea L.J. Maybe this will revive my spirits about purchasing one, and I'll tell ya why...

I moved my PC out into the living room, connected it to the TV via DVI connection and ran an audio cable from the Audigy soundcard to a coax input at the receiver over the weekend. I moved the network cable that was connected to the receiver over to the PC (that's why I didn't respond to your question about what I was trying to do with my remote and internet radio), adjusted my screen settings (the TV automatically detected the DVI connection to the PC) and now everything looks and sounds fine. This is good because I no longer have to deal with WMP and the hot spare bedroom where the PC used to reside. A wireles keyboard and mouse are on their way from Amazon and I purchased a 10' DVI cable to connect my computer's LCD monitor to the video card's secondary connector. This will allow me to keep the TV off when it's not needed. The video card's s/w allows me to set the primary monitor and allows different modes for the desktop display.

Why am I doing this? I'm losing patience waiting for the PS3/MGS4 bundle and I'm realizing how much more expensive PS games are compared to PC games. I have a few of them, so I'm not real keen on buying all over again for PS3. I haven't fired up Doom3, Stalker or Half Life II yet, but I'm going to post some pictures in a thread ASAP.

I know what you're going to say next so... Blue-ray movies (the ones worth purchasing) are still expensive, and the truth is I own more concert DVD's than I do movies.

Anyway, enough about me and my little dilemas. Have at it!

I think the 80g MG package (http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/hardware/mgs4bundle) is the hot item right now. Actually, I think that's the only way to get a 80g PS3.

Amazon got a deal (http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_7152702_1?ie=UTF8&docId=1000249361&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=right-1&pf_rd_r=02D1NWY4Z7CPKCBJ93VB&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=414014101&pf_rd_i=14210751) going on the 40g. The 40g doesn't have memory card slots & only has 2 usb instead of 4.

Here's a chart (http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/about/specs) comparing the 2 models. The 60g is discontinued.

if they won't even consider releasing GTA IV for PC, i'd seriously consider adding it to my 'to do' list of future upgrades...
that, and a projector.

I agree with the expensive part. I've backed off purchasing movies and games for a bit(although I just purchased 2 PS3 games). I use Netflix for BR rentals($14 per month, 2 out at a time unlimited) & I just joined Gamefly($15 per month unlimited game rentals). $30 per month gives me plenty of entertainment and i think it's worth it.

Streaming from the PS3 is great but that's not the only way I listen to music. I still use my 2910 for CD/SACD/DVDA, sometimes I load up my CD changer or I'll listen to music through my cable music stations. I don't mind the TV being on when I stream though.

Price drop???

Didn't Wii & Xbox just do a price drop?

Maybe something will be announced during E3 (http://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php?p=1016111&postcount=1).

The only thing that happened at E3 today, was that Sony got it's ass handed to it.

Final Fantasy XIII was announced cross platform, Sony Fanboys everywhere shat their collective pants. (I've never played any of the FF games, so I don't know what the hubub is about).

NetFlix announced a partnership w/XBOX 360 to allow NetFlix consumers to stream movies from the NetFlix servers onto the 360 at NO CHARGE for current NetFlix customers. (No extra charge for new customers either. Just need to set up an account).

Not a banner day for PS3 owners.

Sony says no to the price drop. http://www.denofgeek.com/games/85112/xbox_360_price_cut_imminent_ps3_cut_ruled_out.html

http://www.efluxmedia.com/news_Sony_Decided_To_Not_Cut_The_PS3_Price_Even_If _Xbox_360_Goes_299_20229.html

Many analysts and game journalists were wondering if Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots would spark a significant PlayStation 3 hardware sales surge, and that question has - for the most part - been answered. We don't yet have exact numbers from everywhere, but if the latest Amazon response has been any indication, MGS4 is a definite system seller.

First of all, the online retailer sold out of the Limited Edition MGS4 PS3 bundle almost immediately, but perhaps more telling is what happened when they managed to restock. As soon as they did so, sales of the bundle shot up 4,033%, which meant the package landed firmly up at #6 in the Video Games division for Amazon. Obviously, a whole lot of people were waiting for Konami's masterpiece before taking the next-gen leap with Sony. On top of which, if they weren't able to land this nifty package - it includes a Limited Edition copy of MGS4, a Dual Shock 3 controller, and the 80GB PS3 - it's obvious that more than a few gamers were willing to wait for a restock. It did take a while for many retailers to get more of these bundles, but as soon as they do, they're disappearing out the door.

It shouldn't have been any surprise to see Konami and Sony teaming up on this bundle in the first place; MGS4 is a massive exclusive for the PS3, and they simply wanted to remind everyone of that one simple fact. If you don't have a PS3, you can't play MGS4...and that's like some form of sacrilege if you're an avid gamer.

I guess that could come in handy for my kids. Not anything to make me wanna run out and buy an Xbox though.

Are the movies in HD? 5.1 sound?

Frankly, I don't know, nor will pretend that I do. At this point, it is a pretty good announcment for both NetFlix, and MS.

As you pointed out, it should be handy for the kids. NetFlix has a small but growing library of on demand movies, and this is a great vehicle for larger distribution. Not to mention I am already paying for NetFlix, I think I'll give it a try when it goes live.

I don't think there is any HD broadcasts yet.

LOS ANGELES - In a bid to regain lost ground in the fiercely competitive gaming business, Sony announced Tuesday that it will cut the price of its high-end PlayStation 3 console by $100. It also will introduce downloads of movies and TV shows to the game machine's online store and, with some software partners, roll out a number of exclusive games.

There is NO price cut. They are lowering the price of the 80Gig to that of the 40 Gig. And stripping out the backwards compat.

40Gig is getting sold out never to be seen again. Just to be sure, the "new" 80gig price point will be labeld the "core" unit.

Doubtful the "core" will be the only SKU that Sony will be selling.

This is NOT a price cut. Smoke and mirrors.

So for a guy like me with zero PS2 titles, am I not getting an 80 GB, otherwise equal or better PS3 for less money than the current 80 GB price? Or is this thing crippled somehow?

Have you tried to pre-order from anyone?

Rich-n-Texas
07-16-2008, 10:10 AM
IIRC, CC was accepting pre-orders, but you had to buy the system AND another Dualshock controller for $59. I didn't want to do that. Any other site I go to doesn't allow me to pre-order. I was on the Sony store auto-notification list when they were first released, but I never got notified. Amaozon stock sold out immediately, and I read they restocked a few days ago and those units also sold out immediately.

I don't mean to discourage anybody but for me the experience has been very frustrating.

GMichael
07-16-2008, 10:13 AM
Wow! Imagine how many they would have sold if they were available. Somewhere in Sony, there's a Purchasing Manager getting his butt chewed off.

Rich-n-Texas
07-16-2008, 10:24 AM
I just went to the Sony Style store and checked my cart and I still see the message..."PLAYSTATION®3 (80GB) PS398011 is currently not available. Please remove it from the cart before proceeding."

That's the same message I got when I put it in my cart a month ago.

BTW, if you want to order it from an Amazon reseller it's going to cost you over $600.

Frankly, I don't keep up on the PS3 architecture as much as others. It will have the same playback as every other PS3's.

As for Back Compat, there are many PS3 owners that have PS2 games. This seems to upset some fanboys that Sony is dropping this aspect.

I'd skip the game to save 100 bucks. I'll rent MGS4 eventually but I'm in the middle of playing Lego Star Wars with my kid

If the 80 does turn out to be a "40" with a 80g HD, than you may loose the memory card slots and 2 USB slots. I don't have the details though so just throwing that out there.

kexodusc
07-16-2008, 10:59 AM
Yeah, I'll sit on the fence at least until some details come out - this doesn't sound like a super great bundle to be honest, just a visual price point change. Still I suppose it's a starting point.
I'll be very honest, I expect to use the 360 for gaming a lot more for the foreseeable future unless PS3 gets some killer games fast, but as BluRay player this is still a great deal.

I bet as we get closer to Q4 and Christmas, the pressure for a price cut or better bundled packages mounts too.

I'm browsing over at newegg.com right now for a BD player for my computer. My concern though is whether or not they pass the lossless formats. I thought I read one review somewhere along the lines that said the player will, but I'm wondering what the soundcard does or doesn't do with the stream. HDCP is another potential barrier...

I have a pretty decent amount of PS1/PS2 titles to keep me satisfied. I'm not a hardcore gamer so I really don't know what's out there. I plan on making some use of my Gamefly account and exploring some new games though.

I have nothing against the 360, just never got into the original xbox. I rarely play online and I'm not really into FPS(but I do think Resistance is kinda fun). I wish MS would have integrated HDDVD into the 360 with full audio/video support. Then I would have a 360 sitting on my shelf instead of a A2 :(

I'm not so big into FPS either - but I really enjoyed Halo, more for the story, sound and visuals, and I like the Call of Duty games. My favs on the original Xbox were the Knights of the Old Republic games though which are more RPG/FPS combos.

Mass Effect for the 360 was absolutely phenomenal too - not a pure FPS or RPG, but elements of both.

I play more goofy games like Guitar Hero and Star Wars lego than anything but I like burning through a good title now and then.

Lately I've been addicted to Bioshock, which is an FPS but with an incredibly weird, 1960's utopia-gone-wrong setting with genetic-manipulating zombies and little kids you eat, and an incredibly cool story to boot. I believe a movie is already in production? Not sure if this one is exclusive to the 360 but it's a lot of fun...

Agree with you on the 360 and the HD-DVD drive, Microsoft did enough prolong the war without realing doing anything to help Toshiba or make the HD-DVD add-on appeal to enough home theater shoppers - smart business move for them since they benefit more from Live movie rentals than HD-DVD sales. But it sure gave Toshiba a false sense of confidence, and those that bougth the drive have a severely crippled piece of equipment now, I hope they have enough good movies to make it worth while. Oh well.

No memory card slots
Only 2 USB slots
No SACD

Sony claims that no one cares about these things.

Your funny

Rich, since you already gotta 880, I highly suggest you pick up the Blu Wave remote (http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-3-Blu-Wave-Remote/dp/B000R5H7KE/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1216330648&sr=8-1) to use with it. The commands are already in Logitech's database so you don't have to do any learning. Sony added a "turn off" icon to the XMB so now the 880/Blu Wave combo can control 99% of the PS3 functions. The only thing you can't do is turn the system on(you have to get off your butt to put a disc in anyways, or do like me and leave your controller on the couch).

Is it "Frack it" or "Frick it"? I though it was "Frick it".

Anyway, thanks GM. The BFD isn't far off. Just gotta let a couple of paychecks work their way into my life first.

Tell me what XMB is.

The PS3™ system includes a user interface called XMB™ (XrossMediaBar). The horizontal row shows system features in categories, and the vertical column shows items that can be performed under each category. The main screen for XMB™ is called the "home menu".

XMB on a PSX

PSX XMB on a Sony BRAVIA TV
The XrossMediaBar (pronounced CrossMediaBar and officially abbreviated as XMB) is the Emmy award-winning graphical user interface developed by Sony.[1]

The interface features icons that are spread horizontally across the screen. Navigation moves the icons, instead of a cursor. These icons are used as categories to organize the options available to the user. When an icon is selected on the horizontal bar, several more appear vertically, above and below it (selectable by the up and down directions on a directional pad).

Originally used on the PSX, the XrossMediaBar is used as the default interface on both the PlayStation Portable and the PlayStation 3. Since 2006, it has also been used in high-end WEGA TVs,[2] the BRAVIA starting with the 3000 (only in S-series and above),some sony Cybershot cameras and the high-end STR-DA 5200ES AV receiver. The Sony Ericsson K850's and W910's media menu is also a version of XMB, indicating that the next implementation of XMB is in Sony Ericsson mobile phones. The XMB has also been confirmed as the menu system in the next generation of Sony's BRAVIA TVs.[3] Sony has also added the XMB to it's latest range of Vaio laptops.[4]

It works a little like windows, but with cool looking pics to keep us simple guys interested.

Cool. Sounds like the XMB has quite a history.

Woke up this morning, checked my e-mail and found that my system shipped yesterday, and is on its way to the local UPS hub here in North Texas. Should be here by Monday, hopefully tomorrow.

Question for LJ. LJ, streaming for $100 pleeeeeease. How do you stream audio through your PS3? How do you save music to your PS3? (this part is serious), how do you set the toaster function on the PS3?

I'm using Tversity (http://tversity.com/) to stream all my photos, video & music. Their website provides alot of info and useful setup guides (http://tversity.com/support/quickstart/). I'm not as computer savvy as some of these fellas around here but I got it installed pretty easily. I've never had any issues with it and I'm able to play my music ripped in FLAC. TVersity transcodes it so the PS3 sees it as PCM.

WMP is pretty simple to use also. Turn on the PS3, click media share under the options menu. Check the share my media box and a little icon that says unknown device is there(that's the PS3...you takin' notes Rich), click allow. A WMP icon should show up on your PS3 under various categorizes(video, photo, music).

My yahoo music shows a icon on the PS3 as well. Pretty much just have to enable sharing. I don't remember if my firewall gave me any trouble.

To rip a disc to your HD, highlight the disc, press triangle and then copy. You can adjust the format and bitrate settings in the music settings. I like to keep songs on my HD because some games will allow you to play your own background music.

Toaster settings come with firmware update 2.50 :p

Gee this thing gets hot! :eek6: It's in the TV's cabinet but the door is wide open and there's plenty of ventilation all around it.

Anyway, setup was pretty easy after I got used to using the controller. I haven't setup the wireless network yet so I'm not connected to the PS network, but as soon as I do I'll update to the latest firmware rev. This box is at 2.35.

Right now I'm playing a CD and I can tell right off the bat that the transport in this box is way better than that in my DVD changer. Once again, an improvement in sound clarity and definition, the cymbals on Pink Floyd's Meddle tracks are more audible and crisp without distortion.

First question: I can only select "Straight PCM" and my only available Surround decode is... "PCM". Do I need to use the Bitstream setting in the PS3's setup in order to be able to select surround modes on my receiver?

Yeah it is fun. The motion sensor in the controller is crazy. I had to build my own strap so the controller doesn't accidentally get slammed into the TV like the wii remotes (http://www.wiidamage.com/). Kinda cool that you can play your own music in the background too.

If you like puzzle/strategy games, give the PixelJunk Monsters demo a try.

I picked up the 1942 game this week. I loved that game back in the day. I get a lot of use out of the cheap $2.99 - $9.99 PSN games :ciappa:

Wifey likes the puzzle games. I'm more into the driving games. I can't get into the shooting games using the joystick to aim. (except for Ratchet & Clank. Love that game) I've been thinking about getting a wireless mouse but have been holding out for the new controller that splits in two. Not sure when that's coming out.

I rechecked the PS3 settings, including the Sound settings and the BD/DVD settings and they're all set to either Auto or HDMI. When I'm playing a CD, I only get the two playback options I mentioned, and they're two channel only. The receiver's speaker indicator lights show all 8 speakers lit, so that tells me all decodes (i.e. DTS NEO: 6, DD...etc) should be available.but no matter how many times I press the Sur. Decode button on the 3800's remote, nothing changes. When I changed the HDMI in BD/DVD at the PS3 to Bitstream, no difference.

I'm playing an SACD right now and I am getting all 5.1 channels with the speaker lights on the 3800 reflecting that. I must be missing something in the receiver's settings, yes?

All 8 speaker indicators will light up if your listening to 2 channel or multi with the PS3. The AVR sees the unused channels probably due to HDMI being able to handle 8 channels. Your not in "pure direct" mode are you?

No, not in "Pure Direct", although I did use it while listening to the Genesis SACD.

No, not in "Pure Direct", although I did use it while listening to the Genesis SACD.

You've probably already done this but make sure your AVR's audio select is set to AUTO. You can go into the menu and set the input source to either LAST or AUTO. Toggle the audio select button to go through your various option.

Go into the PS3's audio settings menu and select manual. Check everything available and see if that works.

Would it be difficult for you to run a optical cable from your PS3 to 3800? Give that a try and see if you end up with the same problem.

I tried mine last night and had no problems using surround modes with CD playback.

Can you use your surround modes with any other sources?

Yes I checked and it's set to Auto. I verified that by selecting a different audio source (DVR) then switching back and the AVR's display indicated Auto. There's also an HDMI choice, which I tried but that didn't make any difference either.

Rich, when it says Surr. Decode on your Yammie's display screen, use your Yammie remote and press SELECT. See if that works. If it does, keep pressing select to get to whatever mode your looking for.

Okay. I connected the optical cable and changed the output from the PS3 to that, and manually turned on all decodes. Went to the receiver and changed the BD audio I/O to it's corresponding output, and I'm now able to select any decode I want. I'd say right now the problem is with the HDMI config.

Next I'll move the PS3's HDMI cable to a different HDMI in at the 3800 and re-assign that input to the PS3.

Your remote looks just like mine but the buttons are a little different. Ok, so when listening to a CD on my PS3, I have to press SUR. DECODE(this makes sur decode appear on my Yammie screen), then by pressing SELECT(your remote doesn't seem to have that button so it must be another one) I can toggle through the various surround options.

Are you able to get the "entertainment" or "movie" effect DSP's to come up on CD playback?

Is your Yammie remote set to AMP when you press surr decode twice?

I use the SUR. DECODE button on the remote to toggle through the surround modes available and I am able to select the various DSP programs.

I went back to the PS3 and under Sound settings > Audio Output settings, I selected HDMI > Automatic > Settings List which included DD 5.1, DTS 5.1, and many Linear PCM 2 channel and 5.1 channel output formats. Then I went to Music settings and left everything alone except Audio CD Output Frequency and selected 48KHz, and turned Bitmapping off (it was on previously, but made no difference).

Next I went to BD/DVD settings and set HDMI Audio Output Format to Bitstream.

Back at the receiver, after re-selecting the HDMI output and starting a regular CD, the display indicated PCM. As far as I can tell, that's wrong. When I use my DVD changer which has the audio out set to Bitstream, I'm able to use DTS and other surround decodes.

BTW, if I set the Decoder mode on the receiver to DTS, I get a message "No DTS" on the display, and no audio.

I just switched to playing music from my PC and the same problem occurs... 2 channel only and no surround modes.

Rich I think your correct. I apologize for misleading you. I can in fact pull up various surround modes on CD 2 channel playback but it doesn't engage. It just goes back to Sur.Decode on my AVR. I didn't pay too much attention at first and assumed I was getting surround processing. I apologize for wasting your time buddy :(

Not all L.J. Right now I'm watching a concert DVD, which offers a DTS output @ 1.5Mbps so I'm realizing that the receiver will only pass what it gets, regardless of the PCM or Bitstream delivery method. Good learning experience..

I ordered 6 Blu-ray titles from Blockbuster so we'll see what kind of audio formats I can output.

On other fronts, I got my wireless connection set up no problems; the PS3 found my router, I entered my WEP key and off to the internet I went. I registered on the PS network, went to the Playstation store and didn't buy ANYTHING!!!

And I must say the 480 to 1080p upconversion is quite remarkable. I WUV my 57" 1080p HDTV!!! :biggrin5:

Cool, glad everything is working out. You should be streaming in no time

Setting up the NYKO remote is pretty simple. Logitech has it in their database already. Mine is set up as a separate game console. Under Devices click "add device", select "game console(with DVD) from the pull down menu and select NYKO as the manufacturer. Type "Blu-Wave" for the model and your all set up.

I created a "PS3" activity on my activities list and just added the Bluwave to it.

BTW, you may want to go ahead and set your BR/DVD HDMI audio settings back to PCM and just let the PS3 decode everything. All the switching back and fourth is gonna get old after awhile. Hopefully they will update the PS3 and have it switch to DTSMA & TrueHD decoding automatically. You can hit display on your remote to see what sound is being output with full bitrate info, since your only gonna see MPCM on your Yammie.

Good idea. Am I able to perform multiple activities simultaneously (i.e. play a DVD and browse the playstation store)?

Some activities yes, some no. Once you go into the PS store, everything will close out. You can do things like browse the web while streaming music. I usually do a photo slide show for family while playing music in the background. You can also do stuff while playing a game. I'm not sure about when watching a movie. You may have to close out of it. You have to use your controller for this though which to me is easier anyways. The NYKO doesn't have a PS button to pull up and toggle different activities. I'm guesses Sony can fix this though. They did add a shut down button. Sony adds new features all the time.

If you want to change your PS3 background, you can add your own photos & place them as wallpaper or you can google up "PS3 Themes" to find a bunch of PS3 theme sites. Download directly from your PS3 browser and install it from the "Theme Settings" on your XMB. My favorite site is allps3themes.com. I didn't do a link because some of the themes aren't family friendly.

Definitely a limitation that I noticed just now. It would be convenient to have a Home button on my 880.

I agree but I'm sure Sony will eventually get to this. They would simply need to add a "Home" button to the options menu. I find the controller easier to navigate online though. Iactually like to use my BR remote when streaming. I can walk around the house and still change tracks. Can't do that with IR

Looks like my questions are too vague...
When I start up the browser session, I then hit Triangle, which opens what you're calling a "slide bar". This gives me navagation options just like a Windows IE toolbar. The way it is now, if, after opening it I move to highlight the Back option, the browser responds and the Slide Bar disappears, I'd prefer having access to those tolls without always having to press the Triangle again to bring them back.

I think I have my first issue. I'm trying to install MGS4, but after I load the disk, it progresses as far as a screen which displays this text:

"This game saves data automatically at certain points. Do not switch off the PS3 system when the HDD access indicator is flashing."

The only other thing on the screen is a purple X, and at this point nothing happens until I hit the PS button, then quit the game. Looks like I'm going to be testing Sony CS tomorrow. :10:

Yes. Nothing happened. I pressed the right arrow key, the Select key, and then just about every other key randomly and nothing happened. I went into Setup and turned Parental Controls off, Auto-start when the disk is inserted (forget the actual command name) and any other setting I thought might be relevant, but no joy. The only way out is the PS button.

FYI... I was using the included Dualshock controller the entire time.

I don't think you can keep it up. I think this is because most of the common functions can be controlled with the press of a button. Zoom in, exit, previous screen....all that good stuff.

I've always been big on using buttons when I'm in a MS Windows environment since it's easier to remember something when you can look at it on your screen, so I tend not to use keyboard shortcuts much. Guess that changes here though. It hasn't completely sunk in yet that I'm not using a computer.

Just got off the phone with them. The guy had me do a System Restore and after entering the settings again, I inserted the game disk but the same thing happened. He suggested I take the game to a store and try it in thier PS3, or try running another game. Sucks that I don't have another game disk, but I'll run out to Fry's in a while.

He gave me a Service Request number so if all else fails I'll probably have to send the system in for repair. That's NOT something I want to see happen.

Yes. Nothing in either of them.

The good thing is, I've watched two BD movies so far without a glitch; the game disk is Blu-ray so maybe there's some hope. I'll find out soon.

I gotta tell ya... I'm listening to some MP3's right now that exist on the PS3; this particluar track is 243kbps and the soundstage is pretty phenominal. It's coming across as a bit crisp, but I don't mind.

So does that mean there're games that aren't so "thumb stick" intensive?

I have the pro-force driving wheel. I love the driving games. R&C is about the only shoot'em up game I like.
The new controller has been said to split in two. One half you can aim like a gun using the motion sensors. The other half has all the option controls like moving and choosing weppons etc. I'm going to wait for that instead of getting a BT mouse & KB.

My kid's been wanting the Time Crisis 4, but I've been waiting for the price to come down. I ain't dropping $80 on a game. It looks OK but I don't think it is multi player like the arcade version and the gun isn't wireless.

I may try to hunt down a used one from gamestop or something. It would be cool if more games supported the gun.

Looks too much like a water pistol.

I thought toy guns were suppose to look that way. That way it's not easily mistaken for the real thing and cause bad situations to happen. A kid could get into a lot of trouble with a fake gun. I remember a segment on the news a while back that did a comparison of a toy vs real guns and they looked pretty identical.

I noticed that the guns at the arcade are brightly colored as well.

Oh, congrats on 9K brotha!

Well I've watched three BD movies now and last night's offering: "The Bank Job" directed by Roger Donaldson was the first with DTSMA audio. The first thing I noticed was that this format is very forgiving of my room acoustics. There was plenty of LFE to go around. :yesnod: I was able to feel the spatiality of just about every environment the characters were in at any given time. It really does give you a sense of being on the set with the actors. More than once I caught myself looking behind me on the couch because I thought the cats were doing evil in the kitchen. I could hear things like shoes sliding across tiled floors, and mechanical sounds that I could actually identify, like the air pressure release when a hydraulically operated door opened or closed. In other words, the audio was very very realistic.

While I was at the store yesterday I picked up Peter Gabriel's "Growing Up" live concert DVD and it just so happened that this DVD has a 1.5Mbps DTS track, and even though I wasn't really doing an apples to apples comparison (live concert vs. drama movie), I'd have to admit that I can understand where people who say you can't hear a difference between a high bit-rate DTS track and DTSMA are coming from. However, I heard a difference in what I called spatiality earlier (or maybe 'a more discernable sense of surrounding' would be a better way to put it), so it was quite a thrilling experience for me.

The video is where I have some concerns though. The color in all three flicks I watched just didn't jump out at me. Are we supposed to be seeing life-like color or vibrant colors? I've never been able to make any real noticeable difference when I've tried to adjust the color settings on the TV with a test disk, and I'm wondering if my TV might be a candidate for an ISF calibration.

In any event, PS3 = good for me! :yesnod:

I still get that excited over DD or DTS. Half the time I'm getting up to answer a knock on the door. The other half of the time I'm laughing at the cat for looking around to see who's making a sound that's from the TV. Every time someone steps on a twig behind me she gets excited and starts trying to find the source.

Yeah so I just inserted DT's "systematic chaos".

DD 5.1 48KHz 448kbps as measured at the PS3. Audio volume setting from "Triangle" = +1. Room volume = 95dB peak.

Good soundstage, good LFE presence.
Warmish ( ) but good CC detail. LaBrie's voice is clear, and Portnoy's inter-mixed vocals are clearly visible on a different audio plane during "The Dark Eternal Night.".
Again... Impressive soundstage.

We have lift-off!!! :biggrin5:

I took the game disk to Fry's; they ran it on their system and it worked. I brought back home, loaded it, and now it's installing. I'm a hap-py boy! :yesnod:
Well, something's still not quite right. I couldn't use the controller at all last night when I tried to play any games.

I turned on the PS with the fully charged controller, waited until the four lights stopped flashing and one light to become lit solid, then put it down and picked up my 880 remote. I was able to navigate around using the 880 with no problems.

Next I inserted the MGS4 game disk, and at the point where it gives me the same message that I quoted in my previous post, I again couldn't get a response when I pressed the X button on the controller. Only when I pressed the X button on the remote did the game start loading. When I got to the point where I start the game by pressing the controller's Start button, I got no response from the game. I could start the game using the 880; I could use the Circle, Triangle, X buttons, but not from the controller.

Tonite I'm going to power the PS on by touching the on/off button, then press the PS button on the controller and I'm betting I won't have any problems when I press the Start button to start the game.

What am I doing wrong here? :incazzato:

GMichael
08-05-2008, 09:25 AM
I think that your PS3 has recognized your 880 as controller number 1. It will ignore most input from any other controller at that point. Only the PS button in the center of the controller will get a response. And that response will most likely be: Do you want to turn off your system (y,n) and, Would you like to reassign controller options (or something like that) (y,n). At that time you can make that controller number 1 and the system will respond to the rest of the inputs.

That's interesting. My controller starts in the 2nd position sometimes too. I wonder if it's possible to set the NYKO or BR remote on 7 or something like that. Most games I have still work with the controller in the 2nd position so I don't pay much attention to it.

I do not know if this has been mentioned here, but I stumbled on to a way to drastically improve the PS3 PQ with DVD's, to the point where it is better than any of the HD DVD players out there(this was HD DVD big marketing point).

Insert a DVD and press play. When the movie starts, press the triangle (options), and a menu comes up. Look for AV settings, and you will see these groups of filters called Mosquito noise filter, Block noise filter, and frame noise reduction. Turn them all to three, and see if you notice any PQ improvement on your DVD's. I personally was shocked at the difference between having them off, and have them on full. When I compared the mummy DVD on my XA-2 with the Reon chip to the PS3 both running split screen, and running frame by frame together via digital timecode. I could not tell any difference between the two no matter how hard I looked.

I've seen those options under the "AV" settings icon, but didn't mess with them. I'll give it a shot.

I started up the PS3 then MGS4 last night the way I described above; the controller came up as #1, and the game played fine.

During DVD or BD playback, the in-movie options list include four squares: A red, blue, green and yellow one. What are they for? I moved my cursor to one, clicked OK on my remote, but nothing seemed to change. I did this with each one several times expecting to see a color change in the movie but I couldn't detect any noticeable difference.

Also, I noticed that while watching a BD movie (Chronicles of Narnia... ummmm... kid flick?) when I selected the AV option I didn't get the same menu Mr. T pointed out above. Instead, I got options that included RGB, Component, and I think another one... don't recall. I'll experiment with a regular DVD and check the results.

I'm really becoming more and more impressed with this "toy"/HD delivery system the more I play with it (the PS3 GM... knucklehead!) and I'm seeing that a lot of thought and engineering was put into this machine by Sony. Little things like how the options icons slowly fade out when you close it, how the information items such as the A/V bitrate counter and time/chapter indicators seem to disappear after a while without being noticed tell me that they paid attention to detail. Granted, this is the third spin for this box and I'm sure Nintendo and MS put some pressure on Sony, but it just makes me feel like I've got a classy piece of equipment that fits well into my home entertainment setup. Thank your co-workers at Sony for me, will ya Sir T.? :biggrin5:

Those are gonna be used later for extra content on BD movies that support it. A few may support it already.

Ya know, I never thought about renting games before buying them. I usually go the Demo route, but I'll have to get on my Blockbuster account and see what they've got. R&C sounds like a good game to help me get *trained* on the use of a console controller. It's tough to cross-over from keyboard & mouse to thumb wheels, at least for me anyway.

I got through the PAIN Crash Course last night and started playing the version I got with the free voucher that came my PS3. It's a pretty funny game. I like that I can get style points just for farting while flying through the air.

Ya know, I never thought about renting games before buying them.

After dropping $60 on that new DBZ I think I'm gonna rent before I purchase now. The game is alright but they left out so much. Now I'm gonna have to drop another $60 when the next one comes out :(

Some games are short too. I'd hate to drop $60 on a game and beat it in a week.

I may pick up a few titles though since the $30 greatest hits are available now.

GM, how's the motor storm?

The disco ball is funny as heck. Once you finish and win the final fight at the end, you have an option to go through the game a second time in challenge mode. Everyone is harder to kill but you get to keep all the weapons you've accumulated. When you get back to the planet you are on now you can buy the disco ball that never runs out of ammo. You can get extra skill points if you can manage to get everyone in the game to dance. I haven't been able to pull that one off. I always end up blowing someone away before I get the chance to make'em dance.

I was reading a review on Amazon about COD4 where the reviewer said he finished the game in six hours. Of course, his six hours is probably my six days, but for $52 bucks, I don't know. Definitely a game worth renting though.

I enjoy Motor Storm very much. It's a killer racing game. It's only drawback for me is that it doesn't support the driving wheel. Even with that said, it's a lot of fun. The next one is coming out soon. I plan on buying it. (And you know how cheap I am. It must be good for me to spring another $60 for it)
Another good game is Burnout in Paradise. Have you tried the demo?

I want to copy songs from my Computer HD directly to a Playlist on my PS3, but it seems that I have to first copy the song to the XMB and then from there I can copy it to the newly created playlist. Is that correct?

Dude, you must have played all weekend! How many hours did it take you? Did you get through the final battle without the Ryno, or did you go back for it? I made it through the first time without it, but just barely. Did you make the dinosaurs dance yet? That was a blast. I enjoyed making them dance and then beating them to death with the wrench. Just don't let them step on you while they're dancing. While you're on that planet, turn a bunch of those hairy snails into penguins and then make them dance. Lot's of bonus points for that. Suck them up in a hurricane for more bonus.

I got the full version of Burnin" over the weekend. Price is down to 29.95 now. So far, I've only entered 3 comps and am up to the 3rd car. Just been having fun burnin' up the roads so far. I'll enter more comps after I've gotten tired of driving like a freakin madman.

Drakes demo is fun. Still having trouble getting used to shooting (aiming) with this controller though.

Ryno? Is that a gun or something? I didn't use any speacial weapons but I did have to use everything I had available. I barely won. Those Leech bombs come in handy.

I used my dancing gun thing often. It's cool that you can make the "bosses" dance too. Gives you enough time to pull out the big weapons. I like that Alpha cannon thing that has like a 8000+ damage rating. Too bad you only get 5 shots.

I downloaded some game demo's from the PS store on Friday:

Pixeljunk: Eden: Swung around on a thread but clueless as to what's to be accomplished.

NHL 209: I really need to get a handle on the two Thumbsticks.

1942: Joint Strike: Yes, a top down arcade game. Didn't like it. Too arcade-ish.

Hot Shots Golf: I didn't even attempt Tiger Woods golf. Twice the game told me to give up, I was that bad!

Monster Madness: Grave Danger: This game is part of a continuing series, and IIRC, also availabe for the PC. This is the game that IMO is helpful for getting the hang of using both thumbsticks. I picked this big boobed character in hopes that a monster would rip her shirt off or something, but no joy.

Learning how to manuver around as well as killing the enemy in MGS4 is going to take some time to get the hang of. I've played PAIN, Siren: Blood Curse and NASCAR 09 off and on, but I'm having trouble trying to understand why I can't steer the car in NASCAR... (the thumbsticks are shown as "unbound" which makes no sense to me).

Ryno? Is that a gun or something? I didn't use any speacial weapons but I did have to use everything I had available. I barely won. Those Leech bombs come in handy.

Yeah, the Ryno is a major weapon when fully upgraded. It's the one the smuggler will build for you if you track down all the pieces of the holoplan. It's so good that it kind of takes the challenge out of the game. You can vanquish most big bosses before they even finish telling you how they're gonna kill you. But you can get extra points for blowing up everything that can be blown up in the entire game. This gun helps.
I've tried to get through the last battle without it and can't figure out how I got through it the first time.

Yeah, without the Ryno, the Alpha and rocket launcher are the two main weapons. I like the bee-hive-on-a-stick (as I call it) too. Just toss it out and let it do all the dirty work.

It went from 60 to 40 a few weeks ago. Then it was released for downloading at 30 last week. I wanted the disc anyhow for the extra 10, but it was at 30 also. Sweet.
I picked up a BR movie for 30 at the same time. Watched the movie for 2 hours or so. Played the game for hours & hours & hours. Next time, I'll just get 2 games.

I downloaded some game demo's from the PS store on Friday:

Cool. It's great for checking out demos. I've got about 50GB of free chit on my drive. It's too bad that more (good) games are not available this way yet.

Pixeljunk: Eden: Swung around on a thread but clueless as to what's to be accomplished.

I swung around in the demo for a few hours. It looks cool and sounds fantastic, but I didn't really "get it" either. Just amusing I guess. Wouldn't pay money for it though.

NHL 2K09: I really need to get a handle on the two Thumbsticks.

Still working on that myself. Hold trigger (gas peddle on many racing games) Turn with this stick, look with that stick, this button to change weapons, that button to block, this one and that one to aim. Way too much for my old ars.

1942: Joint Strike: Yes, a top down arcade game. Didn't like it. Too arcade-ish.

Haven't tried it. Does it have pinball?

A game where I get to tool around on a swan shaped boat (this is a good game for learning how to use the two Thumbsticks simultaneously), and a few others that I can't remember the exact titles of. I guess I have to be on my PS3 and logged in to access the titles in the PS Store.

I'm lost here.

Nooooooooowa! :out:

I'm lost here.
Most of the time, so am I.

How is that game? Are you having fun with it?
It comes with a booklet that shows you how to work your way around the enemies which is the best way to get through the game, but there are also controller stick/button combinations that allow you to grab the enemy from behind and stab/choke him so as not to give yourself away. Takes some concentration so I'll get more serious with it when I run outta Tequila. :o

I have a feeling that even tho it's free now, eventually it won't be or the company will be swallowed up by MS, so I'm going to install it tonite.

BTW, I rented and watched "Cloverfield" last night. :yikes: This is a Blu-ray title with a Dolby TrueHD audio track.

This time I payed close attention to the opening 1/2 hour (had previously seen it at the theater) and allowed myself to become more in touch with the character development. I took my mind off the scene in front of me to look out the window, checking for rain, and in that split second the first explosion occured where the alien started his rampage. I can tell you with honest conviction that noise scared the bejeezus outta me! I'm not kidding. I had even kept in mind what L.J. said about this movie being big on the LFE but it still made me flinch on my sofa. I was awe struck from that point on, and this flick will soon be a part of my BD collection. It was awesome!

Spending more time Burning in Paradise. This game is killer. I'm having so much fun. Already over 400 miles. Up to the SUV now. Love how you can hear the muffled sound system pounding away from outside of it while I crush the chit out of everyone. Had 19 kills in one race.

160g PS3 & wireless keypad announcements:

Live from Leipzig: North American Hardware Announcements

+ Posted by John Koller // Director, Hardware Marketing

Hi everyone…as you read this, our counterparts at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe are wrapping up a press conference at the GC – Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany, which is the European version of E3. Some new PlayStation hardware was announced, and I wanted to let you know the details of how these products will be making their way to North America.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune PS3 Bundle with 160GB PS3 System

The 160GB PS3 system announced at the GC will be available here as part of a new limited-edition bundle that includes the hardware, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune game, a PLAYSTATION Network voucher for PAIN, and a DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller. We’re hearing from a lot of you that more PS3 storage space is important, particularly since the launch of our video delivery service, and this new model delivers more memory and a whole lot of content packed-in. The 160GB PS3 has all of the same functionality as the new 80GB PS3 that’s popping up on retailer shelves now, but obviously has twice the HDD space, so you can build levels to your heart’s content in LittleBigPlanet, download a ton of videos, and still have room for your entire music collection. The Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune 160GB PS3 bundle launches in November for $499.99 (MSRP).

New PSP Entertainment Packs with updated PSP (PSP-3000)

We also unveiled at Leipzig an updated PSP system (PSP-3000), which we’ll be offering here initially through the previously announced Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters PSP Entertainment Pack and a new PSP 4GB Memory Entertainment Pack. I’m personally excited about the 4GB Memory bundle because we’re including a - you guessed it - 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo, which is the biggest Memory Stick we’ve ever bundled with a PSP. Similar to the new PS3 model, this PSP bundle is the result of the current consumer usage model - where more and more of you are finding that extra memory space is crucial. Check out the press release here for more details on what’s included in the bundles.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3090/2780856573_4e37748452.jpg

The new PSP retains the size and features of the current, slimmed-down PSP (PSP-2000), while incorporating some hardware updates:

* The LCD screen will have a wider color gamut and higher contrast ratio to deliver deeper, more vibrant colors, as well as anti-reflection technology so you can see the screen more clearly when playing outdoors. As you all know, the PSP’s screen is a key strength of the hardware, and this update adds an absolutely dazzling LCD screen to the handheld.
* A built-in microphone allows for Skype calls and multi-player gaming communication directly from the hardware - eliminating the need for attaching a separate headset.

Similar to our firmware updates, the new PSP is simply an opportunity to evolve the platform with the newest technology without adding to the cost of the system. The PSP Entertainment Packs will continue to be $199.99 (MSRP), and later this year we’ll release a standalone, updated PSP in a PSP Core Pack, which remains at $169.99 (MSRP).

PS3 Wireless Keypad

Lastly, we’ve announced a new Wireless Keypad for PS3 that will make text communications and Web browsing much easier. The Wireless Keypad snaps onto the top of a SIXAXIS or DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller and comes with some cool features, including a mode that turns the main key area into a touch pad (similar to a touch pad on a Laptop computer). Once in this mode, you can slide your finger on this area to move the cursor on the screen and tap to enter. There will be two short cut buttons on the Keypad that will enable users to jump directly to the XMB’s “Friends” icon and the “Message Box” during gameplay. The Wireless Keypad will launch in late November.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3160/2780863293_f892bd4206.jpg

Last but not least, the Wireless Keypad is a Bluetooth device that can not only be used with the PS3 system but with any other Bluetooth enabled device that has Keyboard functionality. You will be able to use it with your smart phones and other portable devices that are equipped with Bluetooth. With the PS3 system, it can be paired and charged seamlessly just by connecting them with a USB cable.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3151/2781722342_c342129cd5.jpg

That’s all for now on the hardware front. You’ll see much more on the games shown at GC in Leipzig in the coming days

I don't have a PSP now. I was waiting to see of a new version would come out before getting one. I was also waiting on the GPS, which is supposed to be available by the end of the year. I love the idea of remote play and being able to turn on your PS3, play games off it & even view what's going on through the PS3 camera, all from any hot spot. Perfect toy for vacation!

Downloaded and installed it last night. I had to go through the FAQ to get the server running because it wouldn't start from within the GUI, but it's working now. I found out that the WMP sharing service has to be stopped so I went into the Windows Services list and stopped it. I liked that I could make it appear and disappear from the PS3 XMB just by starting and stopping the service. :ihih: I'll run MSCONFIG from a command line and disable it so it doesn't start every time I turn my computer on.

Another problem I had last night was that when I selected the Tversity server on the PS3 and navigated to My Audio ==> All Audio, I got a No Files Found type of message, but tonite when I started up the ps3 and my PC, all files were available. Any file, be it MP3, WMA or PCM, are all playing, so there no longer seems to be conflicts with certain formats. A lot of my favorite tracks wouldn't play when using the WMP server, and I must admit the PCM marked tracks sound quite good.

I haven't played around with things like streaming Webcasts and such, so I'll talk about that aspect of this program later.

Another great find by da man! L.J.

I spent more time using Tversity over the weekend and I'm liking it more and more. I was able to stream a webcast of the pictures and accompanying commentary taken by the Hubble Space telescope, but only to my PC for whatever reason. I'll have to check the FAQ to see how to share it with the PS3. It's an HD webcast BTW.

My niece was over Saturday and we played PAIN for a while; got a lot of laughs over it but eventually it got boring so we loaded up "Cloverfield". On the whole I think she was impressed with the audio and mentioned that some of the sounds coming from the surrounds scared her, so that's good.

Not much else to say right now, but the experimenting continues...

I have my computer in the living room right now; integrated it with my A/V stuff and I have the Yamaha Receiver Manager s/w installed. I can select Internet Radio stations; it's a little difficult but right now I'm not really listening to that source much, and obviously the receiver menus as well. My PC monitor is right next to me at my listening position. :biggrin5:

I was actually referring to the PS3. Well, you'd have to run out and buy a PSP, but it may be worth it.....or not. Anyways, with the remote play, you can access your PS3 menus and use it(PSP) to stream, without turning your TV on. As a matter of fact, it will work anywhere in your house as long as you have a wireless router. So it's kinda like a little PS3 with LCD screen you can carry around. I plan on getting one in Oct. when the new models come out. I plan on using it for all the other features as well, but though that was a nice little bonus. I stream ALOT using my PS3 and always have the TV on. Just a thought.

I stopped hangin' there due to all the constant crying and complaining. I guess it's just a bunch of kids waiting for the next big update. DTSMA & streaming were my only big concerns so I'm a happy man. The rest of the stuff seems like a bunch of delays to me. Home should be interesting for those that do a bunch of online gaming and I guess feel like walking around a virtual world wasting life away. Sounds perfect for you Rich :p

Should be interesting I guess, if they ever get it up and running.

PlayStation Home is a community based service for the PlayStation Network which is currently in the closed beta stage. An open beta is scheduled to launch in Fall 2008, however an estimated release date for the full product has not yet been announced. Home allows users to create an avatar character for their PlayStation 3 console. This avatar will get their own house, which can be decorated with items players can receive in several achievements. Also included in the online virtual world is the ability to meet other PS3 users, interact, play games, show friends different types of media saved on the PS3 hard drive, and much more. In the future home will also expand, allowing players to have more items such as clothing, luxury housing and household items which can be purchased from the PlayStation Store.

That Life with Playstation (http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/27/life-with-playstation-in-pictures-and-video/) download is another one people are crying about.

On 26 June 2008, Chief Executive of Sony Computer Entertainment, Kaz Hirai, announced Life With PlayStation for the PlayStation 3 via the PlayStation Network. The service displays a 3D Earth which the user can rotate the view and zoom in to access weather and news headlines for locations around the world. The user is then able to select any headline to view the full article.[16] At E3 2008, Head of SCEA, Jack Tretton announced that a new partnership between Sony and Google which will allow users to upload video content to YouTube from within games. This is also part of the Life With PlayStation service which was scheduled to be available by the end of July 2008[17], but is now due to be released in August 2008[18].

Well after beating Ratchet & Clank a 2nd time(yes GM, I finally got the RYNO) I sent it back and got Heavenly Sword. This game has some amazing graphics. Very short game(I beat it in 2 days) and pretty simple controls. Great use of the motion sensors in the sixaxis controller. You can pretty much control anything that you can throw or shoot and hit targets with great accuracy. Shooting arrows from across the room and hitting guys behind a wall right between the eyes was kinda fun.The story was decent and you got to play as another character. Overall I would say this is a perfect game for a rental. I probably wouldn't recommend purchasing due to the short length and the serious theme to the game kinda takes away from the desire to replay over & over. I don't think I could ever get tired of Rat & Clank though.

Finally got one of these things this weekend...work schedule's been brutal. The screen is up, the PS3 is connected, did a trial run with Cloverfield. (Sweet - but only in 3.0 cause my Mom ran her car into my sub and I seemed to have lost 300+ feet of speaker wire.) Just went with the 80 GB package because I played a wicked price match game with Futureshop and Walmart (across the street from each other) and save another $40. No PS2 games anymore and I have 2 SACD players as is...
Bought Ratchet and Clank on a whim because of the discussion here...haven't had time to crack open the case yet though :(

Anyway...zillions of questions to follow later.

(and yes...I will be putting Linux on this bad boy in due time...)

Nah, got the cheaper 80 GB jobber. I couldn't bring myself to pay the extra $100 - good deal for a lot of other people, but not this guy,

Yeah, my mom crashed into my sub and the amp is shot. I tried fixing it but it's not amping the voltage.
The other sub is still in storage 30 minutes away with my 2-ch rig ..might get that before the new plate amp arrives, but I doubt it.

Side note - it's kinda cool to downgrade to 2.0 for movies just appreciate what you're missing. Could be a few weeks until I get the HT room all wired up though. Busy time of year for me :mad2:

But ummm... What did your Mom do with the car???

Had the sub, speakers and a bunch of electronics near the door to the house in my garage. My mom isn't used to my garage and wanted to make sure her boat of a car fit...she smashed into the plate amp on my sub and pushed it about 18 inches across the floor. Another 2 inches and the corner of the steps would have poked a nasty hole in my 15" woofer!

So far that's the only damage in the move though. Missing my Harmony remote, a few component vid/optical cables, and my big roll of 14 gauge cable...think I put those in a garbage bag really quick when I was packing...god I hope someone didn't chuck'em in the trash. Maybe they'll show up in 2 months if we ever finish unpacking?

GM, have you downloaded the newest R&C. I've played through it twice already. The story is OK(searching for Clank) but they kinda leave you hangin' at the end. You do get a glimpse at the next villain you'll be facing. I heard to new R&C(full game) won't be out til fall of 09 :arf:
