I could've sworn there was a beer related thread around here somewhere but I'll be dammed if I can find it. :confused5:
Anyway, back a few weeks ago while a couple of friends and I were making our way to the Rush concert we stopped at a nearby tap room for some eats and beers, and one of the guys suggested an ale I've never heard of named Maredsous. It's a Belgian ale brewed by Monks. There are three types of this particular ale: "Blonde 6", "Triple 10" and one called "Dubbel 8". I brought home a 4-pack of Triple 10 and I have to say it does live up to it's description of a "Full bodied Triple with elegantly balanced sweetness, fruitiness and hopping." Only thing is... What does "Triple" mean? Is that triple the amount of hopps? I know what the "10" means: 10% alcohol (this stuff's gotta kick, no doubt about it! :yikes:
In any event, I like it but I'll bet I'd like the blonde version better because that's really where my tastes lie. (e.g. Bass Ale). Anyone ever try this? Do you like the blonde version?

Looks like... "Dead Beer Thread" would have been a more appropriate title.
Nevertheless, two of them suckers kicked me in the butt good-n-hard last Friday.
(Well, that and a couple o' Tequila shots) :biggrin5:

Never heard of Maredsous. This is the beer you want to drink: Sleeman Honey Brown Lager

maredsous sounds vaguely familiar...
never tasted it though...
but I'll take your word on it that it's good :D
still a big chiney fan here, and recently I found new beers I like: Liefmans kriek (wild cherry?) & Lindemans Kriek, as well as Rodenbach (all 3 red beers...).
a good glass of wine is, however, better with certain music at late nights, if I drink something at all :)
Keep them spinning,
Bert.

I've tried Sleeman a few times and it is very nice. Not so easy to get here in the States.
I tried it few months ago in Michigan. Friends brought it down, I mean up, from Windsor.
I'll be in Banff in August so I plan on sampling some fine hard to get Canadian brews.
Any suggestions other than the mass produced stuff?

I prefer to make my own. I go to www.mrbeer.com and order up what I need.
Now that I actually got a job, I can order more supplies. The last batch I made was good, but it never lasts.
Honey Wheat
Blackberry Wheat
Assorted Ales
and a great Pilsner!
Homebrew is where it's at gentleman. 2 weeks of your time, and it's the bee's knees.

Truthfully, I don't know what the difference is between a Lager and an Ale, but blonde/pale ale's seem to get my favor these days. Liquor stores are few and far between here in the Bible Belt; many towns are dry but there are two stores on my way home from work. I'll look for Sleeman Honey Brown but it's not likely I'll find it.
BTW beefy, I neglected to congratulate you on your new gig. and send money!

Beautiful spot, Banff, in case you haven't been there. Lot's to do and see. Don't miss nearby Lake Louise.
I haven't done a lot of beer drinking in Alberta myself, but you might want to check out the the Real Beer site for Alberta (http://www.realbeer.com/canada/brewtour/AB-brewpub.html), or the Beer Expedition Alberta page, esp. for Canmore (http://beerexpedition.com/ab/b_canmore.shtml) (near Banff).
An medium sized brewer in Alberta is Big Rock (http://www.bigrockbeer.com/). I like their Warthog and Traditional ales myself -- not as good as Sleeman but not bad at all.
Man, I gotta get out more. I have no clue where to get this stuff. BevMo???

Hey, cool tips Feanor. I'll check them out.
I've been to Banff before a few years back. Liked it so much we're going back for a few days and then we are driving down to Glacier National Park for another few days. 12 days total between the two. Plan on lots of hiking and some fine brews!

L.J.'s hangover cure thread made me thirsty so I'm dragging this thread up. It doesn't look like I'll ever be able to find Sleeman here in North Texas, but how does J.W. Dundee's Honey Brown stack up? I also like some of Sam Adams' brews FWIW
MMMMMMmmmmmmmmBeer
Great post Rich. I may be narrow minded with politics and music, but when it comes to beer/ales I sample many except for anything from the major brewers like Bud, Coors, Miller....Ah heck, there I go again.
Anyway, I got to try that Maredsous last xmas time in our company swap. Twice a year we gather 24 thirsty people and get to sample 23 beers you didn't buy but were approved. Again all specialty brews, micros, belgian, german, and brittish treats such as Wytchwood Fiddlers Elbow. We do 1 at holiday time of all seasonal ales and 1 in spring full of Blonds, Wits, and extra hoppy ones such as Bluepoint Hoptical Illusion or DogfishHead's Aprihop, a nice IPA with apricots and strong.
Speaking of strong ones, 2 coworkers and I split a case of DogfishHead Midas Touch, which is the oldest know recipe found in King Midas's tomb. It's brewed with honey, saffron, and muscat grapes. It's more like a desert wine with a little fizz and 9% alcohol. We split it because the case was $65. Quite interesting and one the ladies may go for until they realize the kick.
Also finishing off a case of Riverhorse Summer Blond, brewed right across the river in Lambertville NJ.

I was at a pub last night with a couple of friends and sure enough Maredsous was on the list. I've had trouble from day one trying to pronounce the name (Maridzue is how the waiter pronounced it). It was poured out of the bottle into a wide rimmed glass, and with my first sip I realized how sweet this brew starts, and then finishes off with a rich... I don't know... full bodied (for lack of a better term) taste. A 4 pack from the liquor store costs about $12.00 down here; I'm not even going to say how much two bottles cost last night at the pub but needless to say, payday won't be coming a bit too soon.
Another brew I was turned onto some time ago by my British friends is Boddingtons Pub Ale, which is a really smoooooooth ale. That also comes in a 4 pack here, but can be hard to get a hold of sometimes. I guess down here in the Dallas area you have to find the right watering holes in order to come across some of the more obscure names that have been getting thrown around in this thread, because most liquor stores just don't devote much refridgerator space to it.
BTW, I grew up near Cherry Hill which is about 40 - 50 mi. south of Lambertville.

I have a few more Midas Touch left, working on the Riverhorse Blond, still have a few Victory Golden Monkey's, some Heavy Sees Holy Sheets and some German stuff I can hardly pronounce. Also still have a couple Dogfishhead Aprihops.

Maaaaan... where the hell do you get this stuff?!:incazzato:
We have several good places around here that cater to us beer snobs. I am in Bucks County PA and usually frequent Hatboro Beverage. Recently found Big Top in Roslyn where they have double the selection. I also get stuff from Martin's Liqueur in Mt Laurel NJ.
I also seek out brew pubs wherever I go. In two weeks I am going to London for work and taking my wife. We are staying in the Covent Garden area where there is a pub on every corner. Our nightly plan is to eat/drink at one pub and walk to at least two more for desert.

I used to work in Mt. Laurel many years ago. As I get out around down here more often, I am finding some small hole-in-the-wall establishments that have some fairly extravegant imports. I can also buy beer in grocery stores (Albertsons right across the highway) so at the very least I can keep plenty of Bass Ale on hand.

Just got back from Banff and Glacier National Park. While in Banff I consumed plenty of Sleeman Honey Brown and some other Sleeman Aniversary brew. Can't remember the name. The Honey Brown was much better than I remembered and truly an outstanding beer. I don't think we will ever get it here Rich. I've tried and no luck. I spoke to Spec's beer guru and while he loves the beer there is no hope of getting it.
I'll likely be in Michigan in Oct/Nov and I'm getting my canadian buddies to bring a "truck load". Can beer be shipped via UPS/FEDEX from state to state? If so and if I can get it to Houston somehow, maybe I can send a pack your way.
I'll tell ya. If Sleeman was available here in Texas, I would buy far less ShinerBock.
Had a beer in Montana called Moose Drool. Not bad at all. And yes, I got a Moose Drool t-shirt.

Yeah Broad Ripple and that Belgian place where the trail picks up are both good. Sister lives about a mile up the trail from that spot. Mom lives at Dudley and Madison close to Greenwood.

Please give me some suggestions on beer I should try this weekend. My tastes run towards the pale ales but I'm willing to try a honey brown this time. I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll probably never find Sleeman unless I go to a bar which I rarely do anymore, so what's the next best after Sleeman?
F'ing A! It's Friday!!!

No help on the "pale ales" wooosie boy but............................
No chance on getting Sleeman here in Tejas! I emailed Sleeman and asked them how/where I could get it. No distributor here in Texas but there were a couple southeast states that get it. Can't remember off hand but maybe Georgia was one of them?.
The guy I have been emailing at Sleeman is a very nice guy and I am currently in "talks" about being their Texas distributor. I just need to raise a few hundred grand and open up a distribution center that is financially sound. Bah, details.......

The #10 is a much better experience than #8, which was happily verified by my expectations for this Belgin... Benedictine Monk produced ale. ACK - that is purely in the domain of malt liquors in tin cans. I know times are hard, and spreading a wider net to capture more capital is needed, but Belgium ales shouldn't be encroaching on the one trust things a malt liquor can do right.

I'm sad to report that it looks like this old boozer will not be partaking in a Sleeman's Honey Brown taste test any time soon. My contact at the liquor store said no dice. That's okay, I'll stick with my current selection, Maredsous #10. I also have a phone number now to call so I can order a set of glasses. I just hope the price is reasonable and shipping costs aren't rediculous, and maybe that ever-so-slight metallic tinge won't be noticeable when I pour it into a fancy glass.
Anyway, Happy Friday!

Sorry Cartman. I gave it my best shot.
I found a place in Seattle online that had 5 (yes 5!) bottles? I asked how he had just 5 and he told me they were singles. I sweet talked him for a while (on company phone) and almost had him special ordering me a couple cases to ship. He got cold feet and said he did not really special orders. G*# Fu@#*^$! Dam$&*! I was that freaking close to some Sleeman! I'm still on thr trail though.
Anyway, there is an 50/50 chance I might be moving to the Seattle area in the next year or so.............so who knows, I might be swimming it the stuff soon.

There's a couple of places in town that stock the stuff on the shelves. I would tend to suggest a locale prone toward carrying obscure micros. Worst case scenario:

I know! I just got the dang thing finished and the wife drops Seatlle on me. However we have both wanted to move to the area for several years now so I'm actually happy about the prospect of moving. I can always build another outdoor kitchen in Seattle. I'm actually very excited. If we do move, I will have huge blowout going away party and anyone who can get here is invited. The only thing I will take from the outdoor kitchen is my Bulldog Head mounted bottle opener.

Got some in the outdoor fridge right now. Bass is just some darn good beer. I've still been hooked on the Sapporo Premium for a few weeks now. It has become one of my favorites. Dare I say almost as good or better than Shiner Bock? I did not expect much but it has really impressed me so far.
Actually, I think Sapporo just bought or is trying to buy Sleeman! If so, maybe Sapporo can use their distribution channels to get Sleeman flowing south?

Sapporo? That's Japanese isn't it? I think that's readily available at my local liquor store, possibly my local grocery store as well.
Actually I'm envious. If I had the opportunity to move to Seattle I'd jump on it too. The downer would be the all the rainy days, but fishing in the Puget Sound? Awesome!

Yep, it's easy to find at Krogers or Randalls (Tom Thumb for you). If you try it, just make sure you get the black labeled "Premium". It's much better than the light. I have not tried the Reserve yet. It's not a micro brew or heavy beer, it's just a very good mainstream beer. An everyday drinker, if you will.
And yes, fishing is Puget Sound is one of the things keeping me up at night right now. Not to mentioned the mountains, rivers, hiking, the city, the food, the beer, the overall better qaulity of life, etc, etc. My wife's brother would probably move our there as well and he is big into all sorts of fishing so a new boat would also be in order. You can catch Halibut the size of a Smart Car out there.

I'm going back to Maredsous this weekend. I sent an e-mail to their website asking where I might find a set of their glasses here in the US.
Found the Maredsous 8 & 10 at my local Whole Paycheck tonight. I'll got a small bottle of each and will give them a go this weekend.
Tried the Pike Brewery Naughty Nellie pictured above in a previous post this last weekend along with Rogue Brewery's Dead Guy Ale.
Both were very nice, somewhat like Ales. The Naughty Nellie clearly had more of a bitterness but was still very drinkable. Nice hoppy taste.
The Dead Guy Ale was very good. In fact it took me by suprise. Nice Amber color with some wheat and fruit flavors. Kindof Malty. I really liked this beer. I will definitely pick some more up soon.

I got back to the only local store that carries Dundee Honey Brown so I picked up a couple of 6-packs. Nothing to brag about but it is a smooth lager that's not overpowering like the Maredsous or Leffe ales.
Back when I was still playing World of Warcraft a couple of years ago I knew a guy that was in the same guild as me who would talk about this beer, or ale, made by Trappist monks. It was apparently something extra special, at least in his opinion, and I don't think he drank much else but that.
At any rate, it is called Chimay, and there are three varieties of it. I haven't really thought much of it since I stopped playing WoW, but a few weeks ago I was in a new grocery store called Whole Foods and saw that they carried all three varieties! So, for old times sake, or something, I picked up a bottle of each. The varieties are Chimay Grande Reserve, with a blue label; Chimay Premiere, with a red label; and Chimay Cinq Cents, with a white label. IYou probably can't tell from the photos, but this beer, or ale, seems to be unfiltered--there's some visible sediment on the bottom of each bottle. Also, the other more unusual characteristic in the overall visual sense is that the bottles are corked and wire-wrapped. Unfortunately I don't know anything about the differences between the three varieties. Though for some reason it seems like the order of quality (ascending) is Premiere, Grande Reserve, and Cinq Cents. I might be wrong about the first two but I'm fairly sure that Cinq Cents is the highest. Of course, I could be totally wrong about that too, given the translation--five cents. Though I spent considerably more than that for the three bottles--nearly $30!
I took some pictures of the bottles (most of them quite horrible, sorry!) but when I tried to link them into the post I wasn't able to because the file sizes are too large I think. But you can see them in my Photo Gallery, though any damage to your retinas due to looking at them is at your own risk! :biggrin5:
I haven't tried any of them yet; actually I'm not much of a beer drinker--or any kind of drinker at all, for that matter--It's a fairly large no-no for me as I'm diabetic. But some three of these days I'll sit down and try them and reminisce about the days playing WoW with my buddy who enjoyed them so much.
Anyway, if you see any of these, I invite you to try them out and post your impressions here. I'd be interested in reading about what you folks who are regular beer aficionados--though certainly not of regular beer--think of them.

This Chimay you speak of sounds a lot like Maredsous, which is brewed by Benedictene monks in the town of Maredsous, Belgium. These also come in three varieties and are "secondary fermented" in the bottle, thus the residue at the bottom. At first I liked them but the taste soon became too... bold for me.
Thanks for the tip Wits.

Ah, Chimay brings back some memories. Chimay is some good beer. Heavy as hell but very good. I've had all three over the years and I think the Premier (red label) is probably my favorite. Nice sweet fruity flavor. Maybe some molasses type flavors as well.
The Reserve (blue label) is similliar but it's a bit more bitter and has more of a malty taste. It's also probably the heaviest of the three IMO.
The white label Cinq Cents (I remember is being called something else?) is the lightest of the three. A little bitter and malty and probably the easiest to drink out of the three.
However, all three are still pretty heavy beers compared to many others. These are usually "one and done" beers for most people. Back in my college days I would occasionally drink several at a time which was usually followed by waking up in a strange place the next day. :confused5:

Next time your at the Local Liquor store (you know, 1pm, 5pm or 8pm daily:ciappa: ) consider picking up a Dead Guy pint. I think you will like it alot. Very smooth and drinkable. Probably a tad darker and heavier than the Dundee but nowhere near Maredsous.

I'll look for it Cartman but chances are it'll be very hard to come across, just like a lot of the stuff mentioned here. I'll admit that I do see a lot of pint bottles with labels that I can barely read let alone name, but I'm reluctant to buy any of it. While most mainstream beers can be purchased at the local grocery store, it seems for the most part that the stock boys operate from the same template from one grocery store to the next. I think dry areas around here are bunched together which means real liquor stores are few and far between. Funny though that Kroger has Dundee but Siegal's and Goody Goody don't.
One apartment that I lived in up in Jersey (as a matter of fact... the first apartment I lived in) had a bar across the street. I could go out my door, walk about 75 feet and be in the bar where I could buy a 6-pack or even a bottle of Bourbon (hard liquor sales were permitted only until 10 pm) and walk out. I don't think there's any such thing down here.

You need to move south buddy. I went to school in Denton and can feel your dry county pain. Although Denton sounds a little better than your area. Actually lived above a bar for a short while.
For beer in general you might check out HEB's (not Hurst Euless Bedford) Central Market if you have one near you. Maybe down in Plano? They have a great selection of micro/craft beers. I think that's where I picked up the Dead Guy Ale.
BTW, I just launched a Sleeman bomb your way!

Yes, Denton, which is essentially a very old college town has many... out of the norm... drinking establishments frequented by the younger college crowd. Places like that seem to be where you find the obscure "micro/craft" beers.
Is the Houston area considered "Bible Belt" country? I'm in it up here and I think that's got a lot to do with the outdated mentality that exists from a liquor sales POV.
Thanks again bud!

Definitely not Bible Belt Country. Houston is much more laid back and not nearly as "up-iddy" as the NE Texas, Greater Dallas area. You can't go a mile without seeing a liquor store. However, finding the smaller micro/craft brews around Houston can be a little tricky. We have Spec's Liquor and Central Market which are great resources but that's about it. Give it time, Spec's will be in the Dallas Area. They are expanding like crazy right now.
Do you still need a UniCard to buy beer and liquor at restaurants in your area?
Rich-n-Texas
12-05-2008, 09:52 AM
In some areas yes, you still need a unicard. At a local "club" (more like local "dive") here in Wylie you have to pay to become a member, then you can drink beer and such.
Ya know, I guess there is ONE thing I miss about life in Jersey afterall...

I'm fairly partial to our local brew here in Adelaide, SA. Coopers Sparkling Ale. A real ale, 5.8% alcohol, fermented in the bottle. Develops a yeasty sediment, so one should turn the bottle before opening it in order to get the best flavour. Great stuff!
I believe they have been exporting it to the US for quite a few years now, although they replaced the picture of the keg on the label with a koala for the American market (gawd!).

Chimay is good stuff. The blue label is the best in my opinion. Thicker, hint of spice, prunes, and other good beer stuff. If you'll ever in Oakland, CA there is an amazing little pub called the Trappist (http://www.thetrappist.com/). It has an arse load of belgium beers on tap and a fat arse load in bottles.
Tried the Maredsous 8 and 10. The 10 was very good, the 8, well..it was ok, but lacked the robust flavor and umph! of the 10. Funny what an extra dose of candy sugar can do.

Sparkling Ale has a red label (at least here in Australia). They also do a Vintage Ale, which has a higher alcohol content. Its brewed in smaller quantities though, and I don't know if they export it. Its a very nice drop, but its an ale one should sip and savour.

Yes, I've seen the vintage on the shelf but at the time the price vs. unknown quality was too much for my pocket book to handle. Maybe if I see it again I'll give it a go. Not that the pocket book is feeling any heavier these days. Rather I've just tried so many damn beers it is getting harder to find something different.

I can certainly vouch for the quality, but its not a beer to be quaffed with your mates at a bbq. More to be sipped slowly. It actually matures in the bottle and gets better over time.

I'm afraid I haven't come across Shef Stout. It may well be Australian, but I haven't seen it. Will look out for it though.
Sparkling Ale has been the mainstay of Coopers Brewery for many years, along with their stout. The other brews are much more recent products. I know they have been exporting Sparkling Ale to the US for a number of years, but I didn't know they also exported the others. So, the main brews are:-
Coopers Stout - yellow label
Sparkling Ale - red label (my personal favourite)
Pale Ale - green label (similar to Sparkling Ale, but less alcohol)
Dark Ale - brown label
Vintage Ale
A lot of people here drink Pale Ale, its on tap in a lot of pubs. I don't mind Pale Ale, but I prefer the Sparkling, as I reckon it has more flavour.

A lot of people here drink Pale Ale, its on tap in a lot of pubs. I don't mind Pale Ale, but I prefer the Sparkling, as I reckon it has more flavour.
I actually found the Sparkling Ale here in Houston. I just need to go to the downtown store location of our main liquor store chain. I might pick some up this weekend.
BTW, here is the Sheaf (I had the spelling off a bit) I mentioned before. Might have to order a bottle of tow. Hmmmmm?

LOL - funny. I actually worked in a beer/wine store, (a good one - 400 different beers though out the year) for two years when I was 21.
I know a lot about beer. Home brewed for about 5 years and continue to constantly search and log my fuzzy funny drinks.

I know I'd end up having to patronize some little known tap room in order to sample the bizzaro fare y'all talk about here, but I'd be taking my life in my hands trying to get there.

It’s looking like after the first of the years before I get something up and running. Way to busy right now. We have a friend that is a beer fanatic and she really wants to help me out with the brewing process……and probably the drinking. She has brewed before when she was a bit younger.
I just need to figure out what I want to brew first. I’m thinking something like an Amber/Brown Ale or an IPA to start. I don’t want to start out with something to intricate or fancy. I will “work up” to my eventual World Beer Market domination!
Might need a couple/few skilled taste testers after the first brew. Most of my buddies are Miller Light and Bud Light diehards. They wouldn’t know a good beer from piss-water. They keep asking me about my stash of Sleeman Honey Brown. I just keep lying to them and telling them it’s the worst beer I have ever tried and would not want to subject them to it. Why waste it! I’ve got Rich and Sticks down and it looks like maybe Adam and Shaolin would be some good critics. Sorry emesbee, your frickin down under mate! Postage would be too much.

start with a brown or a stout - not as easy to mess up.
also, home brewed browns tend to turn out very nice. much more fresh than bottled. which may explain why i don't drink that many after having home brewed.

Had a Troeg's Mad Elf tonight, very tasty brew. It's been almost 2 years to the day since I last had one.
Had a couple new brews this last weekend.
First up was Victory Brewery's Hop Devil IPA. This was an outstanding beer. This is possibly the best smelling beer I have tried. My wife could smell it from 5 feet away and said it smelled like spice. Tasted a bit the same. Great strong IPA with some good bitterness. Great Beer.
http://www.victorybeer.com/home.html
Next up was Flying Dog Brewery's Old Scratch Amber Lager. This was a very nice "mellow and smooth" lager beer. Nothing really jumped out at me in terms of flavor but that's what made it enjoyable. Very easy to drink. Be interested to try some other brews from Flying Dog because I am not sure I would buy this one again. Not a bad beer by any means but just nothing special.
Flying Dog is associated with Hunter S. Thompson. He does all there graphics and I think he actually has ownership in the brewery. The graphics on the bottles is half the fun. Cool stuff.

So when do we start drinking? :ihih:
Seriously liking the Ommegang Brewery offering right now.
Tried the Rare Vos (750ml) last weekend and it's one great beer. Very easy to drink and not bitter at all. I normally like some bitterness but this one is quite outstanding.
Also tried to Abbey Ale - A very good beer as well.
Next up tonight is a Unibroue 17.
BTW Rich, I tried the Dundee Honey Brown. It's very similiar to Sleeman Honey Brown with a bit less bite. Overall a great everyday drinker.
Try out St. Arnold Amber Ale (made in Houston). You should be able to find it at Korger's, HEB, etc. It's a great everyday beer with just a little kick.

Dundee Honey Brown is brewed & bottled in... Rochester N.Y., and has twist-off caps! :cryin:
Nevertheless, however, that said, that being said, having said that ( ), it's still my beer of choice. I agree Cart, less bite, which is how I like it. The only store I've found it in, including beer stores, is at the Plano Krogers, in 1/2 case cartons. I'm plagued with the constant fear that I'll go into the Krogers and there will be none on the shelves.
Arnold Amber sounds familiar, so I'll keep an eye out for it. BTW, how in the world can you guys like double IPA beers? That sh!t's GOTTA pour like syrup, right? I thought the Leffe & Maredsous was hoppy! :yikes:

I thought you knew Dundee is brew here in the States? Oh well, still a good beer. How's that commercial go? New Ya'rk City? Get a rope.
IPA and Double IPA beers are not syrupy or even heavy IMO. They are VERY hoppy and have some serious bitterness. It's definitely an aquired taste and not for all. I can drink them in moderation. I tried Stone's Ruination IPA a couple weeks ago and it was too much for me. Kindof a bitter citrus hoppy explosion.
Next time your in a "beer rich" environment, maybe try a Belgian Brew. They tend to be more sweet and mellow in terms of bitterness. I think you would really like the Ommegang Rare Vos I mentioned above. The carbonation is almost like champaign to me. Very easy to drink.
BWT, Maredsous 8 is not hoppy at all IMO. If you thought it was too hoppy, might want to stear clear of the IPAs. I think the Maredsous 8 is considered a Belgian brew. Can't remember. Rare Vos is much more drinkable.

All three Maredsous variations as well as Leffe are Belgain Abbey Ales. I guess I have to be in the right state of mind in order to really appreciate their flavor (and no, I don't mean drunk outta my skull! :hand: ).

Hey! Where's Cartman? Whatchya knockin' back this weekend bub?
Since the weather's been cold here, my mindset has gravitated to the warmth of the bourbons as my weekend drink of choice.
Back during the Christmas holidays the liquor stores were selling gift sets that include the spirit along with glasses with the name etched on them. I've been wanting to fill up my (kind of antique) china cabinet with various types of glassware so this was a good opportunity to build up the inventory. I've got a nice set of wine goblets and flutes, maragrita glasses, a set of 50 year old tumblers, lottsa shot glasses that I used to collect when on trips, and now some nice brand specific tumblers. I was back to the liquor store a couple of weeks ago and I found another gift set that was exactly the same as the one I purchased early last month, but this time it sold with the same price as the bottle that's sold seperately so I saved a handsome sum. Problem is, the only glasses I have for beer are two glass mugs, and I haven't found any sets on the cheap so far. Any suggestions on where to find a set of say... 16 or 20 ounce stemmed (or not) glasses would be appreciated.

Cartman is here! Briefly.
On tap this weekend are some nifty brews. My wife's friend who is my only real "fine beer" drinking buddy is coming over for dinner tomorrow. She is bringing a couple rare brews from her collection and I am contributing a Unibroue Maudite, Ommegang Abbey Ale and maybe a few Sleemans.
In terms of Glassware, I have been thinking about ordering a few Pints and other style glasses from some various Breweries. Most sell glassware on their websites.
I have always liked this one,

"Well you see, Norm, it's like this . . . A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the heard is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.'"

On tap for this weekend.........
Boddingtons (friend gave me a 4pack of pint cans) and some Shinerbock and Abita Amber Ale. Keeping it simple for a couple friends coming over for some homemade sausage from my wife's father up in Michigan.

Smooth. Very smooth. Finishes well. It's a "pub ale", don't know exactly what that means, but it has that little "widget" in the can that's supposed to keep it from foaming up when you pull the tab... something like that. I like it, but my local store doesn't always have it on the shelf.

Lamb leather? Nah, that only applies to beers brewed in New Zealand.

If you do try some Sparkling Ale, don't forget the proper opening method. The ale is fermented in the bottle, and you will find a layer of yeast sediment on the bottom. To get the best flavour, before opening, hold the bottle upside down and gently rotate it until all the sediment has been loosened (important, don't shake the bottle!). Uncap the bottle and smoothly pour it into a beer glass in one action. Then enjoy!

Spiney Norman's a wombat.
Well, I'm crossing Boddington's offa my list. It's smooth... a little too smooth... almost flat. :nonod:
I came home after a very difficult week at work thinking a nice cold one would hit the spot, but not only was it nearly flat, the taste left me (for lack of a better term) cold.
Of course my local supplier of Dundee had none on the shelf, and believe it or not, I was VERY tempted to pick up a six of Budweiser Honey Brown. :yikes: Think about it though. AB was sold to a Belgain brewery, so my thought is... it's Belgain beer re-labelled to maintain familiararity with the American audience who think Bud's the end all of beer. My boss thinks Bud American ale is good, but Bud lite and Coors lite are satisfactory in his mind.
Oh well, I'll just have to go shoot some Wild Turkey and be happy.

Where's CARTMAN?!?!?!
Where's CARTMAN?!?!?!
You called?
On tap for the weekend.
Boulevard Wheat? - My friend who owns a local restaurant ordered some and wants me to come by and try some out. He always calls me to test brews before he orders them. Good gig for me, free beer and a good meal on the house for the wifey and I.
Bought two sixers of Rogue's Dead Guy Ale at HEB last night. The neighbor and I will probably take care of one over the weekend. Probably take the other six pack to my buddy at the restaurant.
Sorry that Cartman has been scarce lately. Been busy as hell with all sorts of various stuff. None of which have been brewing my own beer!

Ever heard of Rahr & Sons Brewery? It's a local micro brew in the Ft. Worth area. Figured you might have "par-taken" in some.
My bro-inlaw is bringing me a six pack of each of their brews tomorrow.
So.....On tap for this weekened, Rahr & Sons "sampler pack"! :3:

Ya know what I found in the liquor store Cartman? A variety 1/2 case of Dundee brews. Two bottles each of Honey Brown, a Porter and some others (six flavors in all) that slip my mind right now. Thought that was pretty cool. I think I'm going to pick it up the next time I'm at that store.
Nevertheless, I haven't strayed from Dundee Honey Brown in the last couple of months, but I'll look for Rahr & Sons as well. How is it packaged?

Gotta love the variety packs!
Here is Rahr's website. I highly recommend the Buffalo Butt. It's a nice amber ale. Ugly Pug kindof reminded me of the Maredsous 10. Heavy with with a bit of caramel and coffee hints. The rest are decent enough.

I didn't know IPA stood for India Pale Ale, but I like it believe it or not. The IPA is the "Hoppiest" of the bunch, and the Pale Bock Lager is the "Maltiest".
The Porter tasted like chocolate saltwater taffy! Didn't like it.

Nice pack there buddy. Where did you get it? I might try and find some here in Houston.
I have become a little burned out of IPA. Just too hoppy for me.
How was the Wheat? I'm 50/50 on wheats. I either love them or hate them. But, a fine wheat beer is very nice.
For this weekend......?
Going on a tour of Belgian beers. I have about 8 to 10 new flavors to try out over the weekend with a few friends at the lake. Can't wait. A friend has a couple of bottles of Wynona's Big Brown Ale from Voodoo Brewery. I will drink it while listeing to Primus! :3:

I got these at the liquor store I usually stop at when I'm picking up a good borboun or Tequila. This store only sells the Honey Brown or the craft pack.
I'll let ya know about the Wheat when I drink the other one, but my favs are the Honey Wheat, IPA and the Pale Bock Lager. I like the IPA so much I treated myself to a six of "Bridgeport India Pale Ale". It's brewed and bottled in Portland Oregon and I suspect the water used is quite pure.
Beer seems to taste best to me after I've worked up a good thirst with a clean pallate. :yesnod:

Bridgeport makes some fine beer! I ate at their restaurant several years ago while in Portland with my wife. Good food and good beer. I had some limited/special brew they had on tap. All I remember is it was heavy, dark, delicious and with some pretty high alcohol volume. I had three and was feeling gooooood. I think Ms. JSE had her way with me that night!

while thinking about some good summer brews - crisp and maybe a little citrusy - I ran across an article in Bon Appetite magazine describing and listing several IPA's. Went looking for them Sunday and couldn't find a single one on the list but did get Harpoon IPA and Terrapin Rye IPA (Athens, GA). I saw Sierra Nevada IPA, but passed because the only thing I liked from them was last year's Summerfest (haven't seen this year's yet).
Had no idea Dundee makes an IPA. All I see here is the Honey Brown.
Our state just passed a law to allow beer with higher alcohol content so I hope we get a bigger selection soon.

stepped across the state line into FL to do a little IPA hunting last weekend.
Came back with 6ers of Stone IPA, Dogfish Head 60min IPA, and Sierra Neveda Torpedo Extra IPA and a 22oz bottle of Stone Ruination IPA.
My impressions so far - the SN is probably the hoppiest among the 3 I've tried with a lingering bitter finish (but not in a bad way). Challenged my assumption that the darker beers are the most flavorful.
The Stone IPA is more balanced. The hops are there in abundance, but they mingle with a hint of malty sweetness at the end. I'm extremely impressed with the Stone IPA. After my first sip (from a pint glass), I went to the fridge for a block of smoked gouda which resulted in an enjoyable pairing. Had the same pairing again last night after an early evening rain shower that cooled things down a little. Very nice! This will be one to keep on hand.
Haven't formed any definite impressions of the Dogfish yet - only one bottle so far. haven't tried the Ruination yet - it may be the hoppiest of all.
Now I'm thinking ahead to good hot weather brews. Spotted SN's Summerfest '09 and I have a few more on my list.

Whirlwind would be the summer brew. I call them Lawnmower Beers when they are drinkable while mowing without running myself over. I have been to the Victory Brewpub a few times. It's about an hour and a half from me. I tend to like almost all of their beers. Pilsners in general are at the bottom of my list with Lagers tho.

Loose Cannon IPA is my favorite layman's priced beer of all time so when i saw the black version i was excited as all hell. Well in short the darkness really interferes with what makes an IPA great. Still a very good beer but pales in comparison to it's originator. Sometimes a good thing should just be left alone.

Southern Tier 2xIPA. Not a big fan of ST brewing company as a whole and am usually disappointed with their beers. Their standard IPA is pretty pedestrian but this 2X is tasty. I like IPA's to kick me in the face with hops, which this one does not, however it is pretty smooth.

Haven't been following this thread but why should that stop me from posting. Had a great draft at Worcester's Armsby Abbey (http://armsbyabbey.com/on-tap/). Don't know why I'm not there at least once a week instead of twice a year. Follow the link to the on tap list and drool away.
Had a great beer that I had to order just because of the great name. Pretty Things Fluffy White Rabbits. (http://prettythingsbeertoday.com/site/node/91) How could I not drink something with a name like that.
http://www.prettythingsbeertoday.com/site/sites/all/themes/prettythings/images/fluffrabbitsweb.jpg
Mine was on tap but this is what a the label should look like, I think.
It was a fine thing. Complex with some hop to it. And washed down an indulgent Pork Rillette (which I can honestly say I had no idea really what it was but couldn't pass on this decription either "A traditional French dish made with pastured Duroc Pork Shoulder from Adams Farm (Athol, MA) and our House Cured & Smoked Bacon slow cooked in Duck Fat, White Wine, Fresh Herbs & Garlic served with Homemade Crostini and House Pickled Shallots"
Pork and duck fat. How can you miss with that? Yum.
If you ever get within a 100 mile radius of Central MA and need to blow some cash on good beer and food. Look this place up.
