1) Shakary - Alya - a 2 cd set of music that started the band Satellite. Pretty darn good, it takes a while to absorb it all in.

2) Metallica - Ride the Lightning - Well, it's Metallica.

3) Komping Nazareth - I komped No Mean City, Expect no Mercy, Hair of the Dog and Close Enough for Rock and Roll.

5) Midnight Oil - Scream in Blue live

6) Montrose - pretty good old school rock

7) Sylvan - Artificial Paradise

8) Marley - Exodus. Good music.

9) Shadowland - Mad as a Hatter - love this neo prog a lot.

My week in music:

Went CD scrounging last Friday. After searching thru hundreds and hundreds of used crap I did manage to find a few keepers:

Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn. Remaster. This is killer.
Syd Barrett - Best Of...Wouldn't You Miss Me
Becker and F@gen - Android Warehouse. pre-Dan stuff from '68-'71. Actually pretty good. Most of the tunes had an 'unfinished' feel to them. Mostly piano and vocals. Some things by Becker.

The rest.

Miles Davis - Waterbabies. Wasn't released until 1976 but contains music from the In A Silent Way / Filles de Kilimanjaro period.
Zappa - Waka/Jawaka. Hot Rats revisited. Very good.
Zappa - Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar. 3 CD version. Only listened to disc 1 thus far. Can Frank ever play.
Mahavishnu Orchestra - The Inner Mounting Flame
Santana/McLaughlin - Love Devotion Surrender
Santana - Caravanserai
Los Lobos - Kiko
Dire Straits - Love Over Gold
Mark Knopfler - Sailing To Philadelphia. Something I bought a couple of years ago and put away as it never really made an impression. Pulled it out last week for a fresh listen. Still having trouble getting into this.

Dave Matthews Band - Live At Red Rocks 8.15. 95. Just about the only DMB I can tolerate. A little of this goes a looooooong way with me.

Leonard Cohen - The Future. Why I still have this CD is beyond me. I bought this thing several years ago based on recommendations and listened to it just once. Should've taken it to the used bin store then but held onto it. Pulled it out last week just to see if my mind had changed. Nope, it hadn't. I'm sure this monotonic cross between Barry White and Chris Rea has his fans but I'm not one of them.

Yes - Tormato. New remaster with bonus tracks. Some of those bonus tracks are down right laughable. There's a reason this stuff was never released. The rest was okay I guess. I mean, I didn't hate it or anything but it's certainly not my favorite Yes.

Nektar - Remember The Future
King Crimson - Discipline

Isildurs Bane - Mind vol 4: Pass. Excellent! I really enjoyed this. If you're expecting another Mind vol 1, forget it. Very different. Much shorter tracks. No instrumentals. Every track has lyrics sung with either male or female vocals. I had to double check to see if put in the right CD.

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand, as lot of hype not much substance IMO, but then what do I know

Amy Winehouse - Frank, now this deserves more hype IMO

Finally Cover Me, a comp I made up including cover versions of various songs by Johnny Cash, Gomez, White Stripes, Michael Hedges, Jamie Callum, Bryan Ferry turned out pretty good

Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld
Only listened to this tentoze fave a couple times and not sure what to think yet. Kind of adventurous, which I like. Interesting - I like it when something takes me by surprize like this. Some flavorful prog rock tendencies as well. Time will tell....but it does have a quality that makes me want to keep exploring it even when I'm not yet sure how much I like it.

The Black Heart Procession - Amore del Tropico
Don't know how you could be a BHP fan and not like this a lot. Might not be my favorite, but might not be far behind either. Some of their best songs and Pall (or Paulo, as he calls himself on this one) is in better voice than ever. Played this one a few times in the past week.

Sue Garner & Rick Brown (and friends) - Still
And old fave from 2000. Very diverse and eclectic mix of trip hop, indie pop/rock, avant-folk, Tortoise-like loopy electro-organica (Doug McCombs is one of the band members) and even a near a capella cover of John Lennon's "It's So Hard". Nice CD. Maybe too far reaching for its own good, but lots to like. This is one that has stood up well for me over the last few years and I've even used two or three of the songs on various comps.

And a pretty cool new comp by tentoze - love that Willard Grant Conspiracy song - had to put it on infinite repeat for awhile - spacey use of the saw gives it a touch of Black Heart Procession while the mournful violin brings to mind the Dirty Three - worth the cost of the comp for that song alone - now I've gotta look up who the lady is singing with him on that one (ahhh, Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses fame, thought there was something familiar in that voice) - tracklist is hard to read except in strong light so I have to take a point off for that but it still rates pretty high :) - thanks for all the cool stuff

EDIT: And just wanted to add a thanks to my good buddy Swish Baby for sending me a copy of TheKindaMzkYouLike comp. Gave that one a listen too.

David and David a recent pick-up for 3 bucks used. A few classic tracks, but overall feels like Kevin Gilbert lite.

Bad Booker T. Melting Pot is WAY better. Are there more albums like that one and not like this one?

That's a new Lost Straightjackets disc for me. Loads of fun, but its the same damn CD every time with these guys. Buy one, you buy them all.

That early Supergrass is growing on me, but I suspect they will always be second tier to me.

I like that Moe disc that tug sent me last year. Where do I go from here for the stuff that's not jammy?

The studio album by the Levin Band is better than this live one. More polished, but I might feel differently if I had seen the show.

That's one of the really good Bill Nelson albums. All instrumental guitar based art rock.

Banned from Utopia is a Zappa cover band comprised mostly of ex-FZ band members. Half covers, half originals. The covers are killer and the original songs are unlistenable.

Other stuff not scanned:

Passion Play Mo-Fi complete with 16 track breaks! Schweeeeeet!
Blue Man Group- The Complex. Some great tracks on here, but it's much better with the visuals.
Porcupine Tree- Warsaw and XM live albums. Excellente.

Fluke-Progressive History X-I got this CD a year or two ago, played it a couple of times, liked it, put it away and forgot about it. Been playing the crud out of it this past week. Pretty decent techno if your of the camp that doesn't doesn't decree a problem with mutual exclusivity of those terms.

Mary got some Cure hunger started so I also played "Wish" and agree that it's way underated. Also played Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. Not the best Cure album but certainly some of the bands best songs.

And a few albums I'm trying on for size.

Appliance-Imperial Metric probably the best I heard from a recent pile of discs. Joy Division meets Notwist? Not too far off. Great disc.

The Wake-Harmony and Singles- More Joy Division influenced stuff. Arouses my interest in spots, needs more attention and it may be that what I really need to hear is the second album.

Ten Pole Tudor-A greatest hits disc- So far not really my thing.

The WGC cut is not nearly the best from a very good album, it just seemed to fit. And, yeh, the tracklist legibility did suck.

For me this wk-

more of the same: WGC, Jolie Holland, Mountain Goats, Handsome Family, yadda-yadda. And a Sunday full of vinyl getting the new cartridge broken in some- two Garland Jeffreys I had never heard, Mojo Nixon (very cool), Levon Helm & the RCO All-Stars, Another T-Bone Burnett.

New To Me:

Lambchop, Aw Cmon- different than I expected, but a strong effort. Vocal tunes interspersed with instrumentals that I swear have me thinking of spaghetti westerns, for some reason.

Over The Rhine, Ohio- twangier than Films For Radio. I like it. If I have one snipe, they seem to have an unfortunate tendency to take a refrain, or even one line of lyric, and proceed to drive it into the ground through endless repetition. I notice it a little on the Films disk, but on this one there was a least one cut on Disk 2 that made me hit the skip button out of irritation.

Heehee, I tried to do something artsy fartsy like that on my Giant Sand comp with the text over a drawing and wound up spending a lot of time trying to find a text color that kept the tracklist legible throughout, but wasn't totally successful. Of course, when you know what it says it's a lot easier to read :)

And yeah, I definitely think I need that new WG Conspiracy.

I didn't see your comp, but try adding a drop shadow or a black outline to the type. That will help it to pop a lot. Make sure the font is bold too.

Pitchfork absolutely trashed it today- 3.1. The dood obviously was listening to a different ceedee than the one I bought....

Thanks, good tips. The main problem and reason I call it artsy fartsy is because I wanted to use a weathered looking font and also wanted to pick up a color that was in the paintings of the band I used, both of which conspired against legibiliy. I did wind up using some shadow to make the text pop a little better and to give it a little bit of 3-D look. I'll just post it below with a link so everybody with a slow dialup doesn't have to wait for it to load every time they view this thread (hint hint for those that like to post bigass scans of their stack-o-weekly-cds). It prints out a little better than the jpeg, but you can get the idea.

Ew, subtle. Is it really a problem? I stomp the jpgs pretty good . . . I'll gladly stop if it's an issue. Anyone else not want me to post those?

That cover is impossible. Get rid of the embossing and gradation on the type, it only adds to the problem. Your drop shadow is too far away from the smaller letters and is nowhere near dark enough.

Are you using photoshop for this? If so, just outline the type with a white airbrush stroke. It will give the type some breathing room and still keep the legibility of the illustration.

But this layout is never gonna look good. It's just too busy.
