Hi,
Looking for a cheap system w/ decent sound for my gift shop. Would like to have 5 speakers or more, I don't necessarily need a sub as I will be playing fairly quite background music. I already have a 5.1 receiver not being used, so a system w/ or without one is great. Would like to come in $50-$250 if possible (cheaper the better). I know very little about speakers, other than how to hook them up, any help greatly appreciated.

Athena is a Canadian company that makes very high quality and very good sounding speakers. They have been bought out by Klipsch. The line is being discontinued. These little guys, model WS-15, are a super buy at about $40 each and are available in silver or black. They have a built in hanging bracket and at 8 ohms should be an easy speaker for any AV receiver to drive. They have excellent sound but no low bass and should be great for shop music hung on the wall, etc. 2pr (4ea) would run $155.00 - $159.99.
Be careful that you hook them up correctly. What is the brand and model # of your receiver? You probably can hook up 4 or more in a party mode (different brands have varying names for this mode) that basically sends the same sound thru all the speakers.

Next is an alternative from JBL at a lower price but larger size. These both are quality sounding speakers, no cheap stuff here.

PS: These Athena's might also be available thru Amazon.com

Thinking of the cheap route what do you think of a speaker system such as this for a gift shop, w/ the woofer turned down a bit?:

Thanks again for the help!

Also look at the infinity primus 142's and 152's as well as some of the pioneer bookshelf speakers. Check out vanns.com They have a nice little pioneer bookshelf - S-HF21-LR onsale for $39 each that would be perfect for what you are looking for. They even have a nice warm midbass sound.

That receiver you have is just fine. I would opt for less speakers and better quality if you are trying to save money rather than more speakers in the cheapest possible junk. That Colby stuff will probably drive all of your customers (and any mice) out of your shop! If you are trying to spread the sound throughout the shop with fewer speakers then put them sideways or bounce the sound off the ceiling or wall etc. Keep them up high on the walls if possible.
