Does anybody know anything about these and their sound?

I bought a pair of Marantz HD-440s (and I'm pretty sure the HD doesn't stand for Hi Def) in September of 1979. I used them until about 1992 when the foam surrounds crumbled to dust. I replaced them with a pair of NHT 1.3As (still working beautifully).

I got 13 years of good use out of them, but if you're looking at buying some, check the condition of the woofers' surrounds. I believe you can buy replacement kits for those, but, frankly, I'm just not into tweaking like that (no disrespect intended for anyone who is - I just lack the knowledge, skills, abilities, tools, and experience to do that kind of work well).

Anyhow, as far as the sound goes, I can't really recall specifcally now what they sounded like then, but I can tell you this: I loved them. They're a bit limited in range (something like 45Hz to 18KHz), but they're warm, mellow speakers, and reasonably detailed. In all my time at college, when I had the greatest opportunity to compare these speakers to others, I'd say very few made me think, "Boy, I wish I had those speakers instead of my Marantzes."

I have 3 pairs of HD770's, one pair of HD880's, one pair of Model Seven MKII's, one pair of M10's and one pair of early HD66's which still retain their original open cell foam grills, due to the fact that my brother sprayed them with automotive-grade silicone spray, which saved them from deteriorating. I have had them for 21 years, of which 20 of those they spent inside a sealed box, in storage. At the time I got them from him, I did not need them, so they got sealed & boxed. Anyways, I have always loved Marantz's HD series speakers for their beautiful cosmetics and sound output with Pioneer Amps. My rare pair of mirrored M10's share the HD drivers, but are crossed over differently and the woofers & tweeters have absurdedly huge magnets. Vintage Marantz speakers are one of the greats :)
