His debut as manical madman Johnny Udo in 1947's "Kiss of Death" was amazing. He ties grandma up, and pushes her screaming down the stairs to the strains of his manical laughter.

I also remember the first time he played opposite Poitier was in a little known "race" picture called "No Way Out". In it he plays a racist from the wrong side of town who believes that Poitier killed his brother while treating him at the prison hospital. Not a great film but a rugged one considering the times in which it was made.

To do both roles took guts and courage in a time when McCarthy was chasing people out of town left and right. He'll be missed.
