Hello,

I'm throwing together my first real" stereo. So far all I have is a cd player(marantz cd5001) and I want to get a receiver sometime soon. Im considering a vintage marantz (2270 or lesser). Dont know much about vintage gear, first hand so I'd like any good suggestions of models, brands, ect. budget is <400. And I only need two channels.

Havent ruled out new stuff either.

Suggestions pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee

Consider the Harmon Kardon 3485 2ch receiver. Its a high current 120wpc receiver and has sub and pre-amp outs in case you want to upgrade to a separate power amp and use the HK as a preamp. You can find it onsale on the web for $250. You should also consider used integrated amps if you dont mind not having a radio. You can always add a tuner later. If you can swing about $600, the outlaw 2150 receiver is a beast and a great deal- www.outlawaudio.com

I tend to stay away from vintage equipment because electronics do succumb to time.

Thanks alot,

I've been reading NAD's 325bee is a nice integrated amp too. I actually had a hk not too long ago, so ill probably do something different. I don't care about the radio and I'd appreciate any suggestions. And I can't swing 600$. Sadly $500 is the ceiling for me. Anyone know anything about Yamaha's Rx397? Any good?

Still very interested in hearing from some vintage marantz owners.

so you don't need the radio? well in that case you could go for an integrated too...

Check out Cambridge Audio too...
and there are some nice rotels on Audiogon, if you don't mind new used things...

Keep them spinning,
Bert.

Assuming you're not in Europe, then your best options are probably Integrated Amps from NAD & Cambridge Audio or the Marantz SR4021 (Stereo Receiver) for $430....

Or buy a used integrated amp....

I used the Marantz SR-780 receiver for years, and I loved it! The low end was better than my current Nad T763, and had more voluptuous mids. The only reason I'm still not using it is the lack of modern-day formats (dts, 6.1, component interconnects, etc...).

If you're interested, one of the ebay stores has this unit for $250.

I've been reading NAD's 325bee is a nice integrated amp too.
It is a very clean sounding, if not unexciting looking 100 watt amp. A friend of mine has one and I use a T763 in the HT system. The current NAD stuff seems to be more reliable than their older gear.

Good luck on whatever you settle upon.

thanks for the suggestions! I was just wondering what are the advantages of a integrated amplifier opposed to stereo receiver?

With an integrated amp you are supposed to be getting more amp for the money instead of paying for an amp and tuner all in one.
