i'm looking to replace my current receiver for my HT setup, does anyone have this unit or tried it out? is it worth picking up? is there something better out there in the same price range? i'm still very early in my search so i'm far from set on this model, but it seems like a very good bang for the buck.

what's drawing me to it is the 4 HDMI inputs as well as the video switching from other->HDMI. right now i have a ton of wires running right into the TV and i'm not happy with it like that (thank god for harmony). looking at a price range of under $1000.

currently i have:
yamaha rx-v630 (powering the surrounds)
adcom gfa-555 (powering the mains)

looking to replace both of those with 1 unit

speakers it will be driving (in case is matters):
mains - deftech BP2002TL
center - deftech CLR2002
rears - deftech BP2X

1080p compatibility is a requirement as most of my viewing is bluray/HD-DVD/video games.

thanks in advance, looking forward to recommendations and suggestions :)

Well, the last time I checked the 1800 still had a $1200 price tag, but in any event I have intentions of auditioning that as well as a few other competitively priced units, until then though I can't give you any other answers.

check ebay and audigon, it's going in the $800-830 range + ~$50 shipping BNIB, i was shocked to see that, it's the only reason i'm even considering upgrading.

Not really too much of a huge difference between the 1800 and other units in it's price range. I would definitely give the Onkyo 805 an audition. You can catch this unit on sale sometimes at Circuit City for as little as $699. Usual during early morning 4 hour sales.

The 805 is known to have a few problems but there are some good units out there. Worth a try, I guess. If anything, I would suggest that you audition a few units before making a final decision.

huh that onkyo is actually pretty sweet, missing a few minor things like 1 hdmi port and 1080p upconverting but it's definitely worth a look.

The price I stated was from Amazon, but make sure those prices include the original factory warranty.

In what regards L.J.?

Here's a thread discussing what I'm trying to accomplish with my upgrade...

Well when it comes to flexibility, adjustability, build and sound quality, I just don't see any of these units having a huge advantage over the next. But usually it will come down to the little things, I guess. My #1 recommendation would still be the 805 though. Just can't beat it for the price of $699. If I could have got my hands on a problem free unit, I would own one right now.

i just wish i lived in the states, i'd be all over that onkyo for $699 too, but it's not worth driving to CC just for a good deal (cost of gas negates the savings)

How about the Denon 3808. I prefer the higher end Denon;s over the Yammy's.

I have owned both the 1800 and 805. I have always liked Onkyo, however the newer Yamaha sounded much better in my system.

The 805 simply did not seem as lively. Sounded more like a Denon.

The reviews on Amazon about the Onkyo 805 are overwhelmingly positive, but four out of eleven people reported that their 875 went up in smoke. That doesn't give me a comforting feeling about the hot potato 800 series.

I like my Pioneer Elite VSX-92TXH. Only complaint so far is it doesn't recognize my PS3 connected to HDMI input. But I turn the unit off then on and all is fine. Still, slightly annoying. Sound is crisp and warm. Plenty of power in 5.1 mode. Only other drawback is old school GUI. This unit is selling for high eight hundreds on the internet. When you run the auto calibration there is nothing left to do but adjust your sub to you liking.
