Dear members,

I would like to amplify my JVC AL-F3, but before purchasing any amplifier I need to know the technical specifications of my turntable.
As I do not have the Manual I tried to find out Ohm Values and Milliamperes on the web, but without success.

Could somebody help me out of this dilemma?

Thanks in advance

Sounds like you're asking about the specs of the cartridge. What cartridge is on it?

Doesn't really matter anyway... The AL-F3 takes a P-mount cartridge. It will be a moving magnet cartridge. It will work with any preamp or receiver that has a MM phono input. Not all equipment has a phono input these days. You could buy a separate phono preamp and use any standard line-level input (CD, tape, aux, DVD, etc...) This one's a bargain and would do nicely... http://www.amazon.com/TC-750-Audiophile-Phono-Pre-amp-Preamplifier/dp/B000A36LQ4/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1198035223&sr=8-1

A turntable with a MM cartridge must always be plugged into a phono input or run through a separate phono preamp. The preamp not only boosts the signal, but also reverses the RIAA equalization curve used to make vinyl records.

If you're unsure of the condition of the stylus, it's always better safe than sorry. A worn stylus will do permanent damage to records. You may be able to find a replacement if there are any markings on the cartridge or stylus. If you can't find a replacement stylus, you could replace the cartridge with any P-mount cartridge. http://www.needledoctor.com/Online-Store/Phono-Cartridges?search=p-mount

If the turntable still has the original cartridge on it... Here's the stylus... http://www.lpgear.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=LG&Product_Code=JVCSALF003

If you have the original JVC cart, it was definitely made by Audio Technica. The specs are probably very similar, if not exactly the same as this current model Audio Technica cart using the same design and .7 mil conical stylus... http://www.needledoctor.com/Audio-Technica-90CD

Sir (roiphil345),

your fast and clear reply was a great help.

I am trying to find the suggested preamp (or an equivalent device) in Switzerland.
I presume that the jvc AL-F3 cartridge might be the original one. At the base of its neck (the part which fits into the turntable arm) there is an engraved number: 647.
The stylus might be a substitute, it bears no inscription and is dark blue.
As you suggest I will replace it.

Besides the different color of the stylus plastic, my cartridge + stylus looks exactly like the one you pointed at (http://www.needledoctor.com/Audio-Technica-3482H-U-Cartridge)

Let me thank you again for your great and professional help!

I wish you a great 2008

Ah... I Didn't know you are in Switzerland. Sorry I can't be much help with the shopping then...

I did see the same phono preamp selling on German eBay with a 220 volt 50 Hz power supply. I don't know if that's what you would need or not...

You'd probably be best off avoiding the very cheapest phono preamps. The small, inexpensive boxes with the AC power cord running right out of them. They tend to have an audible hum and they never list the specifications for RIAA accuracy. The one I recommended is a nice step up from that level for just a little more money. You'd probably have to spend at least twice as much to get something entry-level that performs just a little better from one of the major hi-fi brands.

About the stylus... You might be better off spending a little extra money to replace the whole cartridge with one having an elliptical stylus. You'd get clearer sound than you would with the stock cartridge / conical stylus. The Ortofon OMP 5E is nice... http://www.needledoctor.com/Ortofon-OMP-5E-P-Mount-Phono-Cartridge Or you could take a smaller step up to the elliptical Audio Technica... http://www.needledoctor.com/Audio-Technica-91ECD-Cartridge

Good luck :)

A Happy New Year to you too!!!
