Flaming Lips.

I'm guessing that around here, this will be a landslide, but I've been wrong before.

Never heard Flaming Lips but they have to be better than boring as crud Dave Matthews.

I don't mean to offend anyone who likes DMB. I know lots of people like his music, but I do not like it.

DMB albums are fairly consistant, while Flaming Lips are too 'hit-or-miss" for my taste. :)

Actually, FL. I thought about who I'd rather have around for the next 10-20 years, and it had to be the Lips. DMB is already old- they have the same sound all the time. The drummer (Beauford?) smokes, but...

Never heard Flaming Lips

I put FL songs on 3 comps I sentcha.

"Red Carpet Service" has 2 songs.
"Summer '01" has 1.
So does "Progressive Pastiche".

Check 'em out.

Tough choice for me. These bands are really apples and oranges.

I enjoy several DMB albums a lot, maybe more than the Lips overall. That rhythm section is a monster and I find the DMB is a very comfortable groove when thery're "on". Their last few albums have been a snore for me though. They are a one trick pony.

I find the early Lips albums I've had thru my hands to be largely unlistenable amateur slop-noise. Willfully obteuse and ugly. The last 2 albums have been really solid though. I think their best work is yet to come, whereas DMB are finished.

I picked my nose with my lips . . . errrr, i mean I picked the Lips by a nose.

Let me guess, you're not a big fan of The Fall then are you? :D

If there's a tie I know who's going to break it! Great comments :D

Troy's comments hit it right on the nose.

I have to go with the Lips even though my husband would slap me silly for not choosing DMB (he's a big fan). Some of the early DMB albums were pretty good but the last couple haven't done much for me...and that solo album.... peeeeeeeyoooooooooo. (where's the pukey green smilie?).

And while I also agree that the Lips stuff that I've heard is hit and miss, they seem to be a lot more innovative and even if I don't like it all, I can always say that it's, at least, interesting. :D

I've made no secret of the fact that I'm no DMB fan. In fact, the day he played at the New Orleans Jazz Fest (two years ago) was the only day I skipped the event, and it turned out to be a record-setting attendance day with over 160,000 at the gate, while most days it runs just over 100K or so. Anyone that popular can't be all that great, right? :D

Probably predictably i went with DMB.

The Lips, as others have said, are too hit and miss for me. DMB has been consistently better in my opinion. Though i didn't care much for the last two albums they've put out. The clincher for me is really their live shows. And since the question didn't ask which was a better band for studio albums, i have to go with the live sound of DMB over any sound the Lips have to offer. Live, the band has a way of making even the ****ty studio songs sound pretty dang good.

I like a few DM tracks, whereas I like more than a few FL tracks. In fact, I like a few FL albums.

Well, I'd vote for FL albums over DMB albums, but having seen BOTH live, DMB was a much better show. Problem with my statement is I've only seen both ONCE, so it's hardly a rule of thumb...take it for what it's worth.
Both are pretty good, and much better than lots of the crap that's out there.

a little tenor sax noodling wins over that whiny crap Do You Realize? any day for me.

The only thing I'd ever use a Dave Matthews Band album for would be to annoy the neighbors, except they'd probably like it, so I have no use for it whatsoever. I'm still waiting for the Lips to come up with another tune that manages to sound like the Beatles crossed with the Butthole Surfers, but even what they do that falls short of that is usually at least marginally interesting.

they've made the same album over and over again for the last three releases or so. Not at all as adventurous as the Lips.
