Does your current AVR have 5.1 analog inputs? If so, you only need a BR player with 5.1 analog outs. The player will do the decoding and send the info via the analog connection. You can run your video directly to your TV via HDMI.

Yup, that's it! Your good to go. Just pick up a BR player that has 5.1 or 7.1 analog outputs.

Short answer is yes. You should see an improvement.

Do a google of 720p vs 1080p and you'll find all kinda info.

Here's some info to get you started:

In terms of video quality with the Blu-ray player, I do believe you will see a significant difference even with a 720p television. HOWEVER, make sure the store has a good return policy and that you can return if you do not think it is much of an improvement.

Also keep in mind that some Blu-ray movies are better than others. When you are testing it to see if you want to keep it, use something like Casino Royale or check the review at http://www.blu-ray.com/ to make sure it is a quality transfer.

I only have a 720p HDTV and the picture is amazing with Blu-ray. I upscale it to 1080i which will work so I'd say go for it! And the guy at the shop is right BUT ONLY IF the new receiver can decode HD audio and IF you get the higher end Blu-ray players that transmit HD audio. I have the Sony S500 which does do that but my receiver won't decode it (but WILL downscale it); still sounds way better tho thru HDMI than it does by connecting to 5.1 or 7.1 analogs and don't let anyone tell you differently! I've had to learn all this stuff myself because most of the posters on here have yet to go with HDMI. I've DONE all the comparisons and it wins hands down.

Have FUN!
