I have a Harman Kardon AVR245. It has an upsampling option. When I use this option, the highs and lows are both rolled off and the music sounds compressed with missing harmonics and not nearly as lively.

Does this same phenomena occur on the "good" CD players that upsample? Do I not know what "good sound" is?

Any and all comments are welcome.

I would say the upsampling is not being done correctly. Upsampling algorythms are not all alike. Some are really quite good, and some are really bad. For upsampling I would stick with higher end gear. They tend to pay closer attention to the quality of the algorythms that upsample. IMO oversampling is a much cleaner process than upsampling.
