Well, I'm not sure this list is going to garner the attention of that 50 week deal I did, but I'm going to stick to it since I put my neck in the noose. Can't hurt since it continues to be pretty dull here.

This week's selection is.....Sinead O'Conner - Nothing Compares to You (1990)

The Breakdown: In this Prince-penned purple ode to an incomparable ex, there is life after love, but life really sucks.

The Waterworks: "Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling/Tell me baby, where did I go wrong?"

Casualty Count: One lover, seven hours, fifteen days.

Well, I always liked this tune, and Sinead's voice is perfect for it. I don't know that Prince would have done a better version.

I've always loved this song as well. For the song itself and for the time of my life that the song was a hit in. It was right around the time that my husband and I started dating and everytime I hear the song it takes me back to those early days.

I didn't know that Prince wrote it however. This board is so educational!

Well, as I mentioned in last week's thread, I'm not even sure this is the saddest song on that album. But it is devastatingly sorrowful and brilliantly sung...so good call, Swish.

...mine, but one I found somewhere and am using as fodder and/or life support for our beloved RR board. Perhaps others thought these were my selections, so I wanted to set the record straight, and you're welcome to inform us what other song on that album are sadder by your estimation.

Wow...I, too, was surprised to learn his Princefulness wrote this tune. But now, it's kinda not so surprising when I think about it.
Yeah, great tune, though I have to say the video was just as good in a powerful, simple way...if seeing those tears well up in Sinead's eyes doesn't make you weep you just don't have a heart.

Oh yeah. Sorry, I forgot.

Among the songs I mentioned in last week's thread was Sinead's "Last Day of Our Acquaintance," which just happens to be from that same album. It rings with a brutally, fiercely honest portrayal of real hurt, mostly because it comes from the midst of an actual break-up (when all the emotions are still on the surface, aching to cry out). It's the sound of 1,000 disappointments, 1,000 lost opportunities and 1,000 regrets all letting themselves be heard.

I wasn't around much last week and had to go and find #25. Keep'em coming, Swish.

...and it's awesome. I think it's one of those 'Sessions on 54th' compilations. I really like the way she keeps her voice under control, even near the end when she screams "I know your answer alreaeaeaeady". She could keep it going like that for several verses but chooses not to, unlike a Celine Deon. Great stuff and my personal favorite from Sinead.

Wanna know something else...Prince and Sinead like...you know...uhhhh

Anyway, mine is still:
My Beloved Wife by Natalie Merchant - a man lamenting the death of his wife after years of marriage.

Trace of Blood by Pain Of Salvation - a man lamenting the miscarriage of his unborn child

Daddy Never Was The Cadillac Kind by Confederate Railroad. This is a song I've heard on only two or three occassions (I currently do not own it). In it, a man recalls his no-nonsense father and how he never cared for expensive things, like the car that he drove, his house, etc. And the singer remarks how his dad might have felt that his last "ride" was in a brand new Cadillac (hearse). I heard this song a year or two after my father's death and the description fit my Dad to a tee. My dad was always a Ford man and rarely had anything good to say about a GM product. The day of my father's funeral, one of the director's came over to me and my brother and apologized that they had to use the back-up hearse, since the brand new Caddy had broke down. Of course we said it didn't matter, but looking at the hearse (something I had avoided doing up to that point) I noticed that it was...a Lincoln. Somewhere, my dad was having a good chuckle.

Being that it's called "Nothing Compares 2 U" kinda gives away the Prince connection in itself. Prince did record his own version, too. Sappy but I still like it.

That's too much. Like he got a special wish from above. Impressive.

Pretty good pick...the synchopated vocals in Plains of Dawn by POS on Entropia can hit pretty hard too.

That whole Remedy Lane album is IN-TENSE.

Interesting, I thought I was going to be the only one that chimed in with a positive review after glancing at the first post. I wrongfully assumed on a board of music snobs that something with this level of commercialism would crash and burn.

I guess it just goes to show that a well-written and universally relevant song can charm even the most jaded ears and hearts.

Oh yeah, Swish! Good, great, starters!. I read somewhere that Prince didn't like her version. If that's true, what does that tell you about that chump? It tells me that his ego is way beyond his sensibility. I'd whip his ass for being pompous and dumb! I'll be back with some tunes that more will recognize but dear to me . . Pledging My Love- Johnny Ace.

(later)- Box- That was you with Beloved Wife. Pretty special, I agree.
