I am currently looking to purchase a sub. My budget is $500 or so. I am using the Denon 3806 receiver w/ Vienna Acoustic speakers. I have been looking at B&W 600 series and Velodyne DPS 10. Does anyone have any recommendations?

For $500 I would get the Dayton TITSK-12K 12" Titanic Mk III Subwoofer Kit from Parts Express. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-762

It's mostly already put together. All you have to do is put in a few screws to hold the driver and plate amp in and you're done.

This would give you your best bang for $500 unless you built one from scratch.

I have a B&W ASW600 Series 3 and it's a performer. It can shake the walls!! Of course it depends greatly on the CD being played but it has the oomph. The Series 3 has now been replaced with the new B&W 600 series but I can only imagine they would be just as great or better. Can't go wrong with B&W. What size is your room and does it have carpet? Any openings?

Are those B&W subs under $500? Last time I looked at B&W they started around $1200.

My room is about 20x20 w/ carpeting. It is open to the kitchen. Also, it has a cathedral ceiling. I do have a problem w/ echos. The B&W starts at about $600.

Did you take a look at this? http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=300-762

I have the 15" and it hits like a monster.
The 12" is a lot of sub for $500.

Looks like the Titanic sale is over. The 12" is back up to $536 and the 15" up to $688. Still a good buy at those prices but man was the deal sweet when they were on sale.

i'm no audio expert but i have the BIC Acoustic h-100 500 watt sub and it EXPLODES bass from the 12" subwoofer so cleanly. At 250 bucks on its own, I can guarentee it will do the trick

This is actually a 150 watt sub. But I'm sure it works just fine.

Along with the Dayton, you might want to check out the HSU Research VTF2 Mk3 (http://hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-2-mk3.html) or the VTF3, which in more in line with the pricing of the B&W. There's nothing wrong with the B&W, in fact you may prefer the sealed enclosure design. However, HSU is highly respected for their subs and price/performance index and certainly worthy of an audition.

Other subs worthy of consideration are SVS and Def Tech Super Cubes. The Def Techs are very fast, hard hitting subs and come in very small packages, a nice bonus if WAF is a factor.

Good luck in your search, there are a lot of nice options at your price point. BTW, after you buy your sub, make sure you look up Richard Greene's thread on sub placement and room nodes/modes here on AR (click "Search" at the top of the page). Low octave wave lengths are so long that correct sub placement can make or break any sub, regardless of price or performance.

Hope this helps.

I own the SVS PB10-isd (now called the PB10-nsd). It's an amazing 10" sub that extends significantly deeper than most anything in its price class. In fact, I'm not aware of anything in its price class that has such low-end extension. Give it a look. It's big, though, so that may be a consideration. Also, it will keep your costs under the $500 budget, shipping included. Anyway, that's my vote. I've had mine for over 2 years now, and it's been nothing but great. Good luck!

Thanks for all of the info. I went with the Velodyne DPS 12. The difference in price between the 10 and 12 was only $130. The sub is very large. So far I have no complaints. It is night and day from the sub that I had (M&K). I am still tweaking it and trying to find the right location for it.

Hey! For my 15" HT project I planned on a Titanic MKIII, but what a great price on this: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=293-312

It looks comparable in specs, but wOw only 1/3 the price.

Is it a good buy for me? I will be using the NAD amp (mono mode) to drive it.

(Sorry for the thread-jack, the 'sale on Dayton' words had me cruising the site!)

I have it's predecessor and can tell you that Velodyne's rawk the house for home theater. They aren't very musical tho and I found that they benefit hugely from using a power conditioner in your system. Tightens up the bass and makes it great now for both home theater and audio listening.

Have FUN!
