Anybody wanna have a really good time at a rock ‘n’ roll show….make sure you check out Los Straitjackets when they his your town. They’re currently touring with Big Sandy adding vocals to their usual instrumental repertoire.

Talk about down-to-earth performers, when I pulled up and had to fight to find a parking spot, Big Sandy was changing in a van out front and stopped to commiserate…saw him later and he walked over to make sure I had found something…nice guy…but I think my wife is now in love…

They brought along Deke Dickerson as an opener. Great guitar player, playing a rootsy Americana style. He played quite a long set, and while he was good, I think he sensed the crowd was waiting for the headliners when he announced that ….”sorry I’m up here so long…the guy behind the bar told me I needed to fill some time ‘cause this place is open ‘til 3 and he expects the music to keep going to the end…so don’t worry Los Straitjackets are still gonna have plenty of time to play 2 sets for ya…”

Los Straitjackets finally came out around midnight, and kicked things off with a couple fantastic instrumentals. If you like surf guitar or instrumental rock at all…these guys will do it for ya…

Big Sandy swept on and off the stage throughout both sets, and was a great performer and vocalist (although you may wanna brush up on your Spanish since they are supporting their “Rock En Espanol” album so the whole show’s in Spanish, from singing to between song banter…although since that whole album is covers of familiar old rock ‘n’ roll songs, you’ll still at least be able to know what’s going on, even if you can’t understand ‘em)

And, did I mention that there drummer kicks ass…

They played over 2 and a half hours, kept the crowd going crazy and even hung around until the bar was tossing people out to have a beer and pose for a few more pics for people who wanted.

Anyway, just thought I’d mention this show and post a few pics here…a great time was had by all…and even if it ain’t in a big arena, or at some festival or even if it don’t sell a million records….rock ‘n’ roll is still very much alive in barrooms across America.

Good reveiw D, and yeah good barroom boogie is still alive. I picked up a Los Straightjackets disc a couple of months ago after your initial rec. Strong surf-type stuff that generally does translate well in a small venue. I bet this was a great show.

Solid pics too. Look at all those vintage axes. Teisco Del Rey would be in heaven.
