I know that this must have been asked a few times already, but prices change so fast I figured I'd throw it out there. With the holiday season coming up, there should be some sales around the corner.

My dad is looking to get about a 52 inch TV for his room.
His budget is under $2k.
I doubt that he can notice the difference between 720p and 1080p.
He sits about 12 feet from the screen.
He claims to not like the ones that have the speakers on the sides. "Makes them look too fat."

What would give him the best quality for his buck?
Are there brands that I should seek out?
Are there brands that he should stay away from?

So far, I'm looking at the LG 50PC5D on sale at CC for 1699.00
The Samsung HP-T5054 at 1799.99
Panasonic TH-50PX77U for 1799.99
Or the HP PL5072N for 1499.99 at BB

All 50" plasma 720p.

GM, I think you should have started this topic in the Steel Cage. We ALL know where it's headed right?

Actually DLP has a decent picture at a large size. The best bargain on the planet is a RCA 55in dlp at WALLFART for 998$
This would be great for an enthusiast who is used to puting up with finicky gear.
Changing the bulb and a few other things wouldn't bother them too bad if you could get a large picture with quality specs at a low price.
But most are going to go right past and get a wall mountable set.
And for once peruvian schizo is right, LCD has already won, for a lot of reasons, and only a few having to do with quality.
But LCD does have a quality picture.
If your dad isn't too technical, and space is a premium, get a lcd, mount it on the wall.
One thing to consider, these sets can be bright, and your dad will probably like that,
probably wont mind the reduced black level.
Vizio is fine if you are on a budget, thats why I bought mine.
But sony is what I would prefer, and you can get a good size one at Sams or somewhere like that for a decent price.
And of course if you want rock solid reliability go with the Panasonic, I have never had a Panny product fail, NEVER. A panny 47in rptv was my first hdtv, and was really a nice set

I see you finally decided to change your signature to now line up with the imaginary equipment that you think that you have, or better yet...know anything about.

Yeah I'm curious as to why he always wanted me to send him my speakers when he already has B&W's??? And I think his false compliments about them were just a way to keep me hooked into his... and I use this term loosely... posts.

Rich, dont take this the wrong way, but statements like that betray just how little you do know about this stuff.
Your speakers are more like a decked out grand prix, mine are the chevy cobalt.
My 602's2 and cc3 center are (or were) the bargain of the B&W line when I got them.
My first B&W speakers were dm305's, I got them on closeout, floorstanders at 375 bucks.
The review is under steve, audio enthusiast, in the review section. They are my rears now.
My 600 series have nautilus tweeters, and Kevlar speakers, but thats where the resemblance ends with you higher line speakers.
My 602 set was 540$, my cc3 center was 318$, my asw2500 sub was a grand (bought with a good day at the casino)
As for the "cadillac" of the line well, try 20,000$
My prices anywhere close to what you paid for yours?
And the only thing "imaginary" around here peruvian is your love life:crazy:
And one final thing rich, if you knew just how much I love these speakers you would understand just how silly your "false compliment" is.
I have lusted after a pair of speakers like yours for years, but with retirement coming up it just aint gonna happen:sad:

GM - if you're still look for that tv, check out the Panasonic TH-50PX75U and 77U 50" plasmas. The 77U has an anti-glare screen and some connections on the side for a couple hundred more than the 75U (which has all its connections on the back). Both are 720p, have speakers below the screen instead of on the sides and can be had for less than $2K. I've had the 75U for less than a week. It's blowin' my mind.

Thanks Dean,

We did look at the TH-50PX77U. That was my first choice but it is too wide at 52". This one does have the speakers on the side. The TH-50PX75U does not, but we didn't see that one. He did go with the Samsung HP-T5054. It's also very nice. The colors are incredable.

hmm...I guess I wasn't paying attention to the speakers on the 77U. Sorry for the misinformation. I didn't give that model much consideration since I preferred the 75U right off the bat. Glad you guys scored one. I can't wait to really get into hi-def. It's all I think about now. I have tickets to Alabama's opening game this weekend. It's my son's first year in The Million Dollar Band and he'll be performing at the game, but I don't want to be 3 1/2 hours away from my new hdtv. Don't tell anybody I feel that way.

No worries.

I know how you feel. I feel the same way about my projector & sound system. If everyone had HD and a good sub, Enterprise may never have been canceled.

I don't have to tell anyone. You just did. LOL.

Why no LCoS? LJ and Edyct chose Sony SXRD's and AVMaster and myself have JVC HDiLA's. Ed knows more about video than anyone I've at AR (outside of Woodman, RIP) and AVMaster is a dealer of multiple brands yet still favors the JVC. This should count for something, I'd think.

I've said it before, I just can't get into LCD at all. Plasma, while now a true 1080p, still chews up tons of power and doubles as a space heater, although it can have a stunning picture. My brother-in-law just bought the new Sammy LED DLP and I was very impressed. Short start-up times and excellent color saturation. I didn't have another set to do a side-by-side comparison obviously, but my initial impression was that it's a definite contender for best picture. Check avsforums.com to see if Sammy got their QC under control. If so, the Sammy is worth seeking out.

You work at Druid City? I passed my first kidney stone there when I was a freshman at UA in '86. All that beer helped move it along...ahh...fond memories.
