I have the monitor 9 v 2. Which has hard hitting bass wide beam of sound, but the highs are smoothed over, which was not to my liking with guitar rock. So when auditioning the new line listen to the highs and see if they meet your criteria for you type of music. Monitor 9's should be around $1000 cdn.
I haven't heard the 11's but guess the bass will be punchy but more articulate and better mid-range then the 9's and should sell for around $1200 cdn. Which one to get would depend on your music preference and budget.
The monitor 5's would be much like the monitor 7's I use to own. Which had punchy bass and slightly more forward than the 9's. If hard hitting bass is what you want then the 9's is a better choice over the 5's.

I auditioned a pair of 2,000$ bookshelves from this brand and they were absolutely

In all my years in this hobby, I have only heard one, just one, properly set up and synergized pair of speakers in a dealer showroom. That happened to be the $800ish Paradigm Studio 20's coupled with an Arcam integrated and Music Hall 2.1 turntable playing a 45rpm audiophile pressing of Miles Davis. Properly set up that rig was a giant slayer. It is all in the set up.

Some people have NO sense of humour whatsoever.
I spent five hours on a couch in one of the better high end shops in birmingham ala, a small affair run by an authorized macintosh service agent who has been in the business
since the fifties.
I tried everything I could to get a decent sound out of these things (they were being run by integra gear)
I thought that after all of these years the poor guys hearing was going out.
It was like being in a museam, you wouldnt beleive some of the gear this guy had just sitting around, mac, luxman, etc.
But the enjoyment didnt kick in until he hooked up a pair of nautilus floorstanders:1:

So you spent 5 hours on a couch listening to Randy Travis. Damn. You're a sucker for punishment. If I couldn't like a speaker after maybe 5, even 10 minutes, I'd move on. Bravo for sittinger there for 5 hours listening to speakers you don't like.

IT WAS two hours, it just FELT like five hours.
(fell for that one)
And randy was just the first disc, a concert disc he had.
Then I pulled my stuff out, the linda rondstat/ neville collaboration, Rickie Lee Jones,
some stuff from sheffield labs, and of course "kinda blue", one of if not the best
album ever.
And then my special masters edition of Getz and gilberto, which really started the bossanova craze, and of course dark side of the moon(gotta have that one)
And joyce cooling, bob james, lee ritttenoir, Sade, bethoven, strauss waltzes....:3:

I don't think you really want to know the answer to that...in some strange way I actually think he believes his own garbage. It is interesting that nothing was mentioned in the initial post about this lengthy auditioning process on (model withheld) Paradigm speakers. It was only after you busted him about Randy Travis that...now it became a more thorough listening with all sorts of demo discs. If it sounded so bad why would anyone sit there for so long and endure this? Hmmmm. Oh I know...it didn't really happen.

You know I am really getting tired of you. After cashing in a 20,000 $ 401k I was going to treat myself to some new speakers, and had heard such glowing reports on them, and here was a local audio legend selling them , which added somewhat to their credibility
So I tried and tried but NOTHING would get anything aproximating music out of the MDF BOXES.

Chances are the boxes weren't MDF - they use the same cheap particle board in your speakers.
As for PS, I'll give him one thing - he doesn't tell his stories on the fly.

B& W is made out of cheap particle board (I have a pair of 602s2's, a CC3 center,
and dm305 floorstanders for sats)
And a asw2500 that needs a new plate Amp.
These were my older speakers that I traded my newer speakers to a friend for .
The titanium tweeters on the Klipsches just werent working out
Marry in haste repent in leisure, that is also true for speakers, in my small town they are the devil to sell, you need to make sure that they are the right ones for you.
And hey Kex, just because you build your high school project speakers out of particleboard doesnt mean everybody does.
Although that would be an improvement on the paradox er paradigm whatevers, I beleive they were made out of CARDBOARD:6:

WHAT IS SO HARD TO BELEIVE about someone buying a set of darn speakers?
And that wasnt even my best speaker shopping story.
We had a guy in town, took care of the family business, a furniture store, but his love was audio.
So he sold high end (or mid end rather) out of the second story of his family business.
He was also in charge of the local music festival, cityfest.
BB King was a hero of sorts for him, and the best momet of his life was meeting him when he signed him on for our little festival
we sat in comfortable chairs for several hours and listened to B&W 602s2 speakers , playing music from an adcom amp and CD player, something we did on several occasions,
but this time he was telling me about meeting "the king" as he called him.
I wound up buying those speakers, should have never got rid of them.
My friend loved B&W, as do I, broke his heart when he lost his francise.
And cashing in a 401k is the only time I am ever able to buy ANYTHING :nonod:

I don't have a hard time believing you wanted to buy some speakers. I just think using retirement savings is a bad way to pay for them. I was assuming that you were referring to an early "cash out." Perhaps that was an erroneous assumption. If you are below the required age and absorbing the tax penalty, then that would be foolish way to buy speakers. 401k money is generally not though of as a way to finance luxury goods like $2000 speakers, especially when you would never be able to buy them otherwise.

This board has had its fair share of Paradigm detractors over the years, and I don't have any problem with different people having different preferences. But, even those past posters who hated Paradigm would still acknowledge that soundstage, depth, and/or spatiality are not weaknesses with those speakers. The other issues that they harped on were legitimate criticisms, given their preferences.

I just found pixel's post not worth replying to because his description is so far out of touch with reality, short on specifics, and with no consideration on any other variables (i.e., listening to an unfamiliar CD with music he hates, room acoustics, front end issues, etc.). As for me, I have no comment never having heard any Paradigm speakers. All the reviews I've read, however, are favorable. I've got some Polk RTi-35s in the HT system that sound pretty decent to me. A bit bright perhaps, but largely boxless sounding and nothing a bit of treble cut can't fix. Just curious though, as to what you have found to be the best sounding speaker for your tastes. If I could have any speaker, it would be ____________.

A pair of bookshelfs that ran about 2,000' with a pair of stands extra.
You can get a pair of nautilus speakers for that.
I clump these speakers with axiom, polk, psb, and other "screwed together" speakers,

I spent a lot more than 800$ on my cables.
I had a set of klipsch that ran about 1700$ with the sub, but could'nt stand those titanium tweeters, I listen to a lot of music and fatigue was a problem.
But a friend liked em so I traded them in order to get my B&W set back.
A pair of 602-s2's, a CC3 center, and the DM305's, which I am using for rears.
And a asw2500 with a blown plate amp, so I'm looking for one of those, no big hurry.
The whole set with the sub ran about 2200$, all new except for the DM305'S, which were my first set of beemers used with a matching center, delegated to the rear when I got the
602's
The 600 series I got from selling an old mustang, the sub I got from winning 1500$
at a local casino.
The cables I got on the installment plan.
Six monsters of varying quality for the SACD and dvdaudio.
A DVI to HDMI adapter, and thats it for the DVD, except gor the dig audio
A set of silver series each for the CD player and the vintage turntable.
About 400$ for the other speakers, inc sub.
And another six hundred or so for cables from the computer and cable/dvr box,
various coax cables, not to mention running rg-6 all over the house, replacing the cheap cable crap with it, and the gigahertz splitters...
Its not a question of "priorities" its a question of adding stuff as I can afford it, using the occasional windfall for something nice, next on the list is a decent set of amps,
gonna take awhile.
This is what a person who works for a living has to do.
But there are some odd things about "bootstrapping" yourself into a better system,
like realizing that 600$ worth of cables is running out of a 129$ samsung DVD player
My last player cost a lot more and did less.
Oh yeah, theres' the Sony DVD recorder, another 200 worth of cables at least....:confused5:

Well I find his posting unbelievable aswell. I have my Monitor 7's V3 running paired with a Marantz 5500 and am listening to a Quartet West CD (Charlie Haden acoustic double bass, Ernie Watts Sax, Allen Broadbent piano, I forgot the drummers name) in direct mode. These speakers are great. They produce the music the way it was intended...no inhancments on the tweeter, mids, or woofers at all...these speakers are very accurate. Last night I watched the movies Slow Burn aswell as 300, the sound produced from teh speakers just made the physical speaker disapear and thats what you want...pure unadulterated sound the way it was ment.

A local satelite installer received a bunch of high end equipment, right before they sold out

receivers and carey amps.
the PSB sounded okay but seemed a little pricey for their build quality.
as for Polk, their current mass produced crap is totally removed from the classic
speakers they made when they first started. The PSB speakers I saw were similar to what polk was turning out.
Axiom, psb, polk, infinity, they subcontract their drivers, usually getting them from a certain european manufactuer.
As for the paradoxes I do beleive they were the "signiture series", more like the signiTURD
series.
Maybe they werent broken in or something, but they sure stank.
But if some like these them more pwer to em.
I am curious about what one poster said, however.
Woochifer, if even those who hated these speakers talked about their "spaciality", soundstaging, and depth, them why did they hate them?:confused5:

A local satelite installer received a bunch of high end equipment, right before they sold out
and changed hands. They had some PSB and a few maggies, as well as a few marantz
receivers and carey amps.
Oh are those the amps made by Jim Carrey?

PSB uses the same drivers as Infinity ? That must be why the sound totally not the same.

I didnt cash in my 401k to buy speakers, I cashed it in to pay bills.
After a job change I was making 4 bucks an hour less, cashing in my 401k was the only option really.
And while in a neighboring town taking training classes I dropped by likis audio
in Birmingham, figuring after all of the crap I'd been through I deserved a little treat,
and I had heard so much about these speakers, and I had a brochure, and I SO
wanted to like em.
And they sounded like crap, NOT JUST CRAP, BUT BAD CRAP

As opposed to GOOD CRAP...is that what you eat for breakfast?

One of the biggest disapointments in audio that I had ever had.
I thought, "mayby its the blasted randy travis album he's playing", but nothing
sounded good on these speakers.
Anyway I wound up with a complete set of klipsch for 300 less that these two speakers,
and a 37in tv, and a hugh tax bill from uncle sugar

Is that the same uncle that introduced you to the 'raincoat club'???

You know I am really getting tired of you. After cashing in a 20,000 $ 401k I was going to treat myself to some new speakers, and had heard such glowing reports on them, and here was a local audio legend selling them , which added somewhat to their credibility
So I tried and tried but NOTHING would get anything aproximating music out of the MDF BOXES.
And is this really a forum where calling another a liar tolerated?
I have read several of your posts with their fuzzy logic and faulty reasoning processes,
assuming that most think like you (they dont) and thats fine, babble on all you want
about "choosing" between two different things (audio and video) and how great your microscopic 30in tv is but keep you insults and character assinations to yourself,
you rude little boy, I have no patience for such crap

And do you really think two hours is a long time to audition speakers? Explaines a lot

Sorry that my microscopic 30in TV isn't good enough for you. 2 hours is long enough to audition something if it doesn't sound good and it's about 119 minutes too long if I am listening to Randy Travis.

I called them "paradoxes" as a joke, something you probably dont get, not having a sense
of humour.
it IS a paradox as to why these crap speakers are so popular however.
And a LOT of speaker manufacturers contract out their drivers, to their specs, but someone else makes them, this allows one huge manufacturer to achieve
economies of scale, something someone living in a third world country
probably would'nt understand, which why it IS a third world country.
As for the "raincoat crowd" this is the type that wears a raincoat to a porno theater,
why do you have such an obsession with this bunch of perverts, do you feel some sort of kinship?
And finally "uncle sugar" is what we who hate the welfare state call the current united states, if you ever move up here you be will be introduced to him, as you will probably not be able to hold down a job:rolleyes:

As for your "30 in tv" I had one of those, a samsung "tau" series.
Its the same basic 30in tv made in a few places, but to each individual companies
specs.
phillips, sanyo, samsung, and others all sell the 30in crt hdtv, all of the jacks and controls are in the same similar places, some have more features, some a better grade of tube but they are all basically the same
Mine was pretty good, but theres' better out there:hand:

That looks like the speaker I saw, a Nautilus wanna-be right down to the cabinet
shape, Its a wonder they didn't mount the tweeter on top.
But they got the price right, you'd HAVE to be insane to buy these speakers when you can get Natilus (or at least b&w) for the same price.
And I dont care if you "discredit" these representatives of the marketing machine that is the modern media, and you can post links to reviews until eruvian grows a brain,
but these speakers will STILL sound like crap.

But they have very different features. You are pushing hate for the Paridigm brand becasue you are bias toward B&W. I happen to like Paradigm better, but I do think B&W makes a good product. Unlike you, I wont trash either company.

For the most part, just about every speaker looks pretty darn similar with some exceptions. Like the Nautilus, which looks like something out of the year 2323, or the oHm speakers. But 90% of the speakers out there all fall into a similar format in terms of the way they look, so it's kinda hard to be THAT different with it. Now, just because they all look similar that certainly doesn't mean they all sound the same as all of us are clearly aware of the vast array of sounds that can range from different speakers, even the ones that look identical.

You're the one without the clue, those speakers your link refers to are the top of the line
B&W, BUT THIS TECH is used is most all of their speakers, my plain jane 602-s2's
have natilus tweeters.
Look at the paracrap " housing, noticed its rounded slightly, this is classic B&W
This is what I was reffering to, actually more like their speakers of a few years ago,
like their older style natilus bookshelves.
Nautilus tweeters, btw, improve imaging with tapered waveguides disperse extraneous
sound, and they work like a charm, imaging is some of the best I have heard on a pair of speakers.
Anyway thanks for the picture of my dream speaker, if I ever hit the lottery....:ihih:

The 602's are a far cry from the Nautilus speaker though, even if it does have the same tweeter.

Whos trashing anybody? Paradigm might make some good speakers, but they certainly
didnt impress me with the presentation I heard.
Some might dislike B&w, thats fine, but I think they're nice, and their sound rescued
me when I was about to give up this hobby.
Paradigm might make a good pair of speakers, but the ones I heard certainly werent,
and, heck, you can get a LOT of speaker for 2,000 bucks, and these sapsuckers
didnt even meet the HTIB speaker bar.

I've heard the Paradigm speaks and I prefer the sound of them over the inflated price of the B&W. Sound is subjective...the only thing I have agaisnt your opionion is that you say these speakers are crap and don't meet HTIB status, your constant trashing of a speaker that has won several awards....Its obvious that you are over stating you opinion here. If you dislike the sound of the speaker thats one thing, but to lie is another.
