I'd like to start copying my vinyls to CD. I have an Akai AP-206 with a half-inch mounted cartridge (Sonus?) and a Sonus stylus (model P?).

I have several choices. Replace the stylus (recommended replacements?), replace the cartridge and the stylus (recommended replacements?), replace the entire turntable (not desirable, since I'm, uh, frugal).

Any recommendations on the above?

In it's day the Sonus was a very nice high compliance, induced magnet cartridge. I do not think you could find a stylus for one today. I do not know the mass of your tonearm but since you said you are frugal I would suggest the Shure M97 or the Ortofon OM10. Both should work well in about any tonearm and both are around $100. If you do not have a template for setting overhang and offset for the cartridge www.enjoythemusic.com has a free paper alignment guage that is in agreement with my MoFi Geodisc.

Welcome and my first question is what electronics do you have the turntable playing through. Many modern receivers do not have a phono preamp section so the cartridges output is not raised to the level a cd player. As always we can help more if we know what equipment you have in your system.
