I just bought the athena as-af 2.2 package from audio avisor. 5.1 system.
What does everybody suggest I buy for an AVR.
So far,
1.DENON DRA-397
2. HK AVR 147
3. Onyko TX-SR504

No prestige but either one is a giant killer. I bought the XR70S for a second system and wound up using it instead of my trusty Yamaha DSP-A3090 and Marantz MA700 amps. With full digital amplification, hdmi switching and multi-format support, it does just about everything. It drives my 4ohm speakers without a hitch. My yamaha was occasionally driven into protection. It sounds a little brighter than what I was used to but for home theater, it's perfect. Pick one up from a source with a good return policy and give it a test drive.
You may also wanna take a look at the Onkyo 604. You can probably hunt it down or a little over $300. I own last years 603.
The 604 accepts MC PCM via HDMI.
I've read good things about the suggested Panny's as well.

great products, excellent rep, and nice looking as well. if i were looking for an htr, its the brand i would be drawn to.
check the specs on all of them, and look at the product weight. that is an indicator of quality believe it or not.

Onkyo 504 or 604. Or even last years 503 or 603.

I'm with BubbaGump. My brother has the Panasonic SA-XR70S and it sounds pretty amazing. It's very smooth with powerful bass. I would take it over any of the analog receivers twice it's price.
