Ok, what is everyones 10 albums that they would take if they knew that they were going to be stranded on an Island for a lengthy period of time. The rules are:

You must choose 10 albums from any generation, no compilations (soundtracks are not allowed unless it's a score) or greatest hits albums.
You cannot choose any artists more than once.
Other than that...pick away and provide at least some reasons for your selections....

Here are my choices:

David Bowie: ZIGGY STARDUST - so many great albums to choose from, but this one takes the cake mainly for the songs It Aint' Easy and Lady Stardust

Jocelyn Pook's UNTOLD THINGS - great laid back and mellow for those evenings of contemplation on the island.

Philip Glass THE HOURS soundtrack - superb contemplative recording.

Stevie Wonder's INNERVISIONS - bring some funk and reality into the picture for those ocassions of joy.

Sigur Ros AGAETIS BYRJUN - just something fun to listen to.

Jimi Hendrix BAND OF GYPSIES - one of my favorite guitar-driven recordings.

Alan Parsons Project EYE IN THE SKY - Hmmm. I just like this album for some odd reason.

Nada Surf LET GO - just a cool album with loads of memories.

Elliott FALSE CATHEDRALS - also many memories.

Paloalto SELF TITLED - memories and hope.

ELP - Brain Salad Surgery (Killer CD)
Kansas - Leftoverture (yeah yeah, I know the one track is played. but I love side 2)

Spyro Gyra - Fast Forward (So I had to grow a little)
ELP - Brain Salad Surgery (Killer CD) AGREED

Kansas - Leftoverture (yeah yeah, I know the one track is played. but I love side 2)

I knew there was a reason that I liked you! If you check the archives for similar threads, you'll see that Leftoverture always, always, always is at the top of my Desert Island list.

I'll give you my top five for now, because I don't have time to come up with ten before Lost starts.

Kansas - Leftoverture - the best album ever made IMO. Great music, great lyrics, killer album. And, yeah, I'm sick of Carry On, but it's a solid song that's been ruined by classic rock stations that refuse to recognize the greatness of the other tunes on this album.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here - Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Welcome To The Machine. 'nough said.

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust - This album changed my life.

Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production of Eggs - This album excited me in a way that music hadn't excited me in years.

Hem - Rabbit Songs - This CD is my favourite stress reliever. The music, the songwriting, and Sally Ellyson's incredible voice all work together to sooth the savage beast within.

I always find myself picking different things when it comes to ...let's say a Desert Island than what I listen to on a day-to-day basis. I think that all of us have our 'sacred' stash of albums that we frequently visit and re-visit, but if I know that I only have a few to listen to for quite some time it becomes a whole different beast. I suppose when I think about it I really want to be able to listen to songs that paint vivid pictures for me and things that are reflective and personal for me. Yet at the same time, songs that don't grow tiresome, which even the best ones do at times.

Well for me, I guess ZIGGY STARDUST was the first album that when I listened to it, at first, was rather average. I skipped through it a bit and found a few tracks that I could enjoy, but then something magical happened. I found myself craving it. It was a rock album that had this beautiful nature to it that nothing else quite had before. It also is the first and only album that I am aware of where songs like IT AIN'T EASY truly sound more like a whole rock choir vs. just one man singing out. It's just an amazing record with such passion and mystery. I, of course, love just about every other Bowie album, but this one I always come back to and each time fall in love again.

Let me pretend I had to run to this desert island quickly and didn't have too much time to analyze this or make it perfect; here' an off-the-top-of-my-head list:

The Smiths -- Louder than Bombs
Velvet Underground & Nico (s/t)
Jay-Z -- The Blueprint
Miles Davis -- *****es Brew
Rolling Stones -- Exile on Main Street
Talking Heads -- More Songs About Buildings and Food
David Bowie -- Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders from Mars (I'm sure it was the power of suggestion, but that is an excellent choice)
Billie Holiday -- Love Songs compilation or any other disc of hers I could find from the late 30s or early 40s
Louvin Brothers -- When I Stop Dreaming: The Best of the Louvin Brothers
Daft Punk -- Discovery

Oops, you said no compilations or greatest hits in your "rules". Sorry. Only problem is, when you're picking albums from the "pre-album" era, it is impossible. Louder than Bombs was sort of like its own album. Anyhow, the rules kinda suck for me, but thanks for starting the thread.

Aww, I'm blushing. I should say that this new record is some distance ahead of their last full-length and even the 7" between in terms of accomplishment. The first two you could appreciate while secretly knowing you enjoyed their live shows more, passing them on to friends with apologies for the production values and general amateurness... but this one I feel confident passing around with no reservations whatsoever. It's a great record. Slosh, if you won't let me send you this, then please buy it yrself... modern-radio.com (http://www.modern-radio.com).

Keep adding to the list and taking away but always revert to the classic albums when I short list, tho this didn't help cause there is SO much.

These albums are some I still listen to so they have stood the test of time and can't see their appeal to me diminishing any time soon. I know some of you are thinking that my list was too easy but if I still listen to them I can listen a bit more till Gilligan brings Ginger to brighten things up.

I found 3 cases of Darma beer. That should get us through the first hour.

Are the cases bottles or cans? Either way we can use both. If it's cans we can use the aluminum for cooking things in later as well as making a sharp edge for cutting and perhaps killing wild animals. Likewise if they are bottles we can use that for boiling water to drink, use the glass for cutting and perhaps (if we get a fire going) we could make molotov cocktails and throw it at any perpetrator within a arms-throw distance.

Oh quite funny. In fact after I posted it I realized that I was essentially having two completely different thoughts at the same time and so that's how I typed it out. Oh, what the hell, you've got the Rush CD and the beer. I'll be right here next to you. I found a box of Apollo bars. Some of them are a little squished, but they'll still taste good. :cornut:

Ok, maybe not the FUNNIEST THING EVER, but certainly made me laugh as the guys at Google obviously have a sense of humor too. I'll take the beer if it's a dark beer. Otherwise I'll just drink some saltwater. So how many of us are on the island at this point???

Wow, great choice (not that the rest of your choices aren't), and a somewhat surprising one. That's an album I haven't listened to in far too long, and I need to get it out this weekend.

Yeah, you know, I think that you turned me on to that album when it was new but I didn't really fall hard for it until I had had it for a few years. Normally the high-concept side project thing makes for novel but forgettable work by everybody involved, but this really works for me for whatever reason. It seems to bear more fruit with every listening, so I guess it would be kinda ideal for this desert island thing.

Pinback - Summer In Abaddon
Yes you was, but that is a fine pick that just gets better with age. had it spinning a couple times lately myself, because you know it's way too short so you have to sppin it at least twice, and it quickly gets me into a biorhythmic groove cycle that's pretty hard to quit. Coconut juice, cool tradewinds, mostly naked island girls, and some Summer in Abaddon .. ah, angel of the abyss, could do much worse :)

Just to reiterate, what a great record. Listened again this morning, and it sounded better than ever. And not just musically, it is a pretty nice sounding disc too. Not nearly as heavily compressed as most modern stuff, and a good foundation.

The final track comes from out of nowhere, and is a sharp contrast against the more somber and contemplative tracks before it. It couldn't have been a more perfect ending. A steady rock n' roll drum figure breaks into action. Guitars pound alongside it. Confidence and activity is at its apex. There is one last moment of reluctance ("Too scared to look at what I hear outside") and then the screamed-out chorus puts everything to rest: "Protect. Embrace. Engulf./Remember the summer in Abaddon." Prompting us to remember our times of darkness so as to never revisit them. A call to "Release the riggings" is sounded, and the journey into (and out of) Abaddon is over.

When you turn the page after the lyrics for "AFK", you are met with the photo I mentioned at the beginning of this review. However, instead of a staircase leading down into a dark underground, the staircase is leading up into the open, and a promising blue sky hangs overhead. What Pinback have created here is an album to fight off that lack of motivation that sometimes curses us all. They've created music to soothe those moments of disappointment in our lives, and something to calm the restlessness of that hour before your shift at work. Looking back at what I've written, I realize I've done a hell of a lot more than I originally intended. But then, I suppose that's the point of Summer In Abaddon.

I have nothing really to add except that I concur with the assessment of that last track as ass-kicking. Best out-of-nowhere rocker since Bedhead's "Psychosomatica".

Top Ten:

Patti Smith: Horses, easter, wave because it flooded my brain with memories of my teen years when I played it last year. A true poet, which is an essential element of any song as far as I'm concerned.
Jimi Hendrix: Electric Lady Land because there has never been or will be a guitarist of his magnitude. The influence for all who followed.
The Beatles: Meet The Beatles, because that was my first taste of Rock-n-Roll when I was about 9 or 10.
The Beatles: The White album. Bizarre, but rocks like a mother!
Led Zeppelin: 4th album, but I enjoy every one I own (mostly on vinyl) because that band has kept me sane. And Jimmy Page ranks right up there with Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton...etc.
Yes: Close to the Edge. Is there such a category as Mystical Rock? Great lyrics, great musical quality.
Genesis: Tough one but I'll have to go with Wind & Wuthering, great story telling (i.e. One For The Vine)
Jethro Tull: Warchild, because not only is it distinctly English, but I saw them at the Spectrum in Philly when they were touring in support of the album in '74. An amazing theatrical performance. Aqualung runs a very close second.
Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon. I liked some of their earlier stuff and centainly more after, but I think this is their defining release. Plus, I saw their performance of it on the "Pulse" DVD, and it was mind blowing.
Allman Brothers Band: Eat a Peach, because of my favorite track: Melissa. Beatiful song, and would be the name of my daughter if I was married and had kids. Not on the list but very much ingrained in my library is Rush (many tracks from many titles), which viloates the rules of the game. Fun thread nonetheless.

So I'll throw up my list (which is subject to change of course), since it doesn't have too much crossover with what was already thrown up. I limited my selections to records I have on CD. It would be a different list if I included my LPs, which would include many more classics like Boston, Bob Seger, and ELO.

These are all records that have never fallen out of heavy rotation since entering the collection. Many have been repurchased and replaced as tapes and CDs wore out.

1. Green Day - Dookie: American Idiot runs a close second, but Dookie has stood the test of time.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3d/GreenDayDookie.jpg

2. Oasis - Definately Maybe: If the Beatles are bigger than Jesus, and Oasis is bigger than the Beatles, then Oasis is...?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d4/OasisDefinitelyMaybealbumcover.jpg

3. Social Distortion - Social Distortion: Listening to this record will turn you into Fonzie. Aehhhh!
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4f/Social_Distortion_Self-Titled.jpg

4. The Gadjits - At Ease: Little indie punk/ska/lo-fi band out of Kansas City that just happened to make two of the greatest unknown rock records of all time.
http://www.hell-cat.com/dispatch/_depot/title/thumb/e2358c12140a5076d48e1038fab4e617.jpg

5. Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman: Simply the greatest techno/dance record.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b4/Underworld.dubnobasswithmyheadman.jpg

6. Lo-Fidelity Allstars - How To Operate With a Blown Mind: Just fuggetaboutit. This is album is just ill. Anyone with access to a television in the late 90's will recognize the song Battleflag off this record, but the remainder of the album was forgetten and ignored.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c1/How_To_Operate_With_A_Blown_Mind_album_cover.JPG

7. Dandy Warhols - The Dandy Warhols Come Down: Again lots of songs off this record were licensed to movies and commercials, but few actual buyers for the album (at least in America).
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/50/Dandycomedown.jpg

8. Cornershop - Handcream for a Generation: Not just a wierd record, but like a Frank Zappa wierd record. But also highly listenable.

9. Ash - Meltdown: Straight ahead Rock Music the way it was meant to be.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/ce/MeltdownAlbumCover.jpg

10. Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes: Because high school wouldn't have been the same without it and Good Feelings is the greatest album "closer" of all time.

OK, I'll take a swing at this...

In no real order:

REM - Reckoning
Pink Floyd - DSOTM
The Who - Who's Next
U2 - Achtung Baby
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
Genesis - Trick of the Tail
The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
Green Day - American Idiot
The Pretenders - s/t
David Bowie - Alladin Sane

For every one of these selections, an equally good choice exists from the very same band/artist (with the possible exception of the Pretenders). In some cases, 2 or 3 equally good choices. So I guess you could say I awarded bonus points for consistency of output.
