Geez...social commentary from Alanis Morrisette, the former Debbie Gibson pop-diva wannabe who decided she'd cash in more being a pretender in the Alternative scene...

What's next? After school specials with Michael Jackson?

Thanks for that painful video reminder of just how much I truly despite this woman.

I would hope that after fifteen or twenty years in the biz she would have grown as an artist, so I have no problem with her eschewing her pop princess role for one of social commentary. That said, I suspect I would rapidly tire of sharing the same space with her. You'd think that not one instance of positivity had occurred in her life...ever.

The interesting (or, I could say.. IRONIC.. HAHAHA) thing is, Alanis comes off looking way more stupid than the Black Eyed Peas ever did. As she's proven before, the woman has no clue about irony.. I could see how fans of her particular way of thinking might enjoy this, but as a parody or commentary, it falls flat on its face.

btw, I think the original BEP video is great.. it has just enough "wink" factor so that you know that even THEY aren't totally buying into it..

Wow, tough crowd. Saw it yesterday and it works for me, I got a chuckle, and I'm not a big Alanis fan. Seems kind of an obvious target, though. I mean, it is like the most inane and irritating song of all time. Not completely sure what her goal was, but it does help to point out how these kind of songs contribute to the objectification of women that is so prevalent in the modern music world, and she probably views it as even worse when a woman is the purveyor of the message.

I agree that there are songs that contribute to the objectification of women, however, I get a kick out of this song, as I said, I think it has enough "wink" factor that it almost seems like a parody itself..

hi Davey.. hey have you heard Silversun Pickups? They're right up you're alley, sort of a mixup of Snowpony and Autolux.. don't know much about them.. but I've heard a few songs and immediately thought "this is something Davey would dig" - Slosh too, if yer listening..

Can't really disagree, the BEP seem like a parody act all the time to me, kind of like the Village People. No one takes them seriously, but I still think Alanis' version is better than Fergie's, just because I think the latter is just too annoying. And I do kind of like Alanis, at times, and she did put it out coinciding with April Fools Day, although I think she missed by a few hours, but I'm not sure she was aiming at any high-brow social commentary as some suggest. She does seem to have a pretty good sense of humor if you've ever seen her in concert or on a talk show or in the movies playing God :)

Think I've listened to those guys before. Can't remember, but sounds really familiar. Thanks, I'll check it out.

edit: Oh yea, early Smashing Pumpkins. Nice, but don't all their songs kinda sound the same. Love the video for the Kissing song, the bass girl is pretty funny, and they do make a pretty good ruckus at the end ...

I did happen to listen partway to one of their newer songs and it kind of sucks, just sounds irritating to me, constant audio level and totally compressed to the max, no hint of a musical nuance ...

I don't have much use for either version. I actually like a lot of Black Eyed Peas, but that song bugs me. And Alanis's thing was funny for like the first ten seconds and then just got tiring to me.

I saw this one on another board and thought it was pretty funny...

I'm not a fan of Alanis. I find her extremely annoying. But I like the fact that instead of being embarrassed by her past and trying to forget about it, she turned it into this instead...

You Tube use to have her Star Search performance on there too...more candy-pop princess crap.
That doesn't bother me so much as the attitude she's always had in interviews and on TV. The most ungracious celebrity I've ever seen....except for maybe Terrell Owens.
Oh well. I'm glad she's rich now. Wish she'd crack a sincere smile once in awhile.

But maybe she's really nice in person.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qWwd7fwTt8&mode=related&search=That's actually pretty funny, in an ironic sort of way. I love the dry delivery of such insipired lines as, "c'mon party people in the house" and "wave your hands like you just don't care". I prefer her pre-JLP output, but I admit it's just Madonna-and-Paula-Abdul-wannabe poseur stuff. There's better.

That's what I get from it...she does need to get a dictionary and look up the word ironic though.

Its a stupid song and even if (a big if) the BEPs meant it as a joke, its still one of the worst songs ever. Some things are just so bad as render parody useless.
