I've got a question about Blue Ray. I have a 61 inch Samsung DLP, model HL-P6163W. It has an HDMI port that I've used for a Direct TV HD receiver and another HD OTA receiver. Never had any problems with it. Yesterday my neighbor bought a PS3 and let me use it to see how it looked on my TV. I know my TV isn't a 1080P or anything, it will do 720P, but I still thought it would work on my TV but not as good as with a true 1080P set. When I plugged it into my HDMI port it said on my TV "HDMI DVD device not supported". I tried unplugging it, turning the PS3 off and on, and nothing worked. I had planned to buy just a Blue Ray or HD DVD player and now am not sure if it will work. I've almost decided to go another direction and buy a combination DVD Recorder with HDMI and an ATSC tuner, but am afraid it won't work either. On Circuit City's websit under the reviews of one of these HDMI DVD Recorders a person reviewing the product said he had a Samsung DLP that wouldn't work with the HDMI device. About 3 reviews down.

What's the problem?? Will this new DVD recorder work for me or not?? I'll post the one I want too. Thanks

This may not be your answer but I was looking at some Blu-ray players today and the description said your HDTV had to be HDCP compliant. So Samsung may not have the HDCP encoder. This is going to be a big problem for those of us who have the older HDTV's without the HDCP. We will be forced to use component which will allow 720p or 1080i but not 1080p and for some reason, no upconverting of standard DVD. If the PS3 has component out, try that.

Man that sucks. Yeah, I don't know if that's the problem or not. Do you think it might have just been a problem with the BD device and that another type of HDMI upconverting DVD recorder/player will work?? I can only order the thing online I think and would hate to wait all that time for it and it not work. Thanks

I went to Samsung's website and it said that all their DLP's were HDCP compliant. I emailed them and am hoping for an answer. According to their website the early Toshiba HD DVD players had a firmware problem that wouldn't allow them to hook up via the Samsungs HDMI port. I'm still not sure if this DVD Recorder with an ATSC tuner will work or not.

I tried hooking the PS3 up again and it didn't work. I used the red, yellow, and white PS1 cable that I had and it didn't even detect that anything was hooked up. With the HDMI cable hooked up it still just said "Device Not Supported". I wonder if I need to keep it hooked up to my friends 1080P LCD and change the setting in the menu to 720P and then bring it back to my TV and try it again.

If your Samsung is like my HDTV which I bought a couple years ago, it only goes to 1080i, so if the PS3 outputs 1080p, then going into the PS3's setup and setting it to 720p may work. Let me know.

If I were you and about to spend money on a movie player, it would be one of the HD players. I don't know about all of them but the Sony s300 plays anything from 480i to 1080p. Both are backward compatible with standard DVD and will offer upconversion via HDMI.

So you don't think I'll have the same problem with the S300?? I'll try changing the settings and I'll let you know how it worked out. Thanks again.

Red, yellow and white cable...? Are you talking about the L/R red and white audio cables and the yellow *composite* video cable? If so, Blu-ray will not work as it does not support composite video. Now if you use you *component* video cables for the video portion (red, green and blue) then it should work just fine. If you are just using the red, white and yellow cables in place of the red, green and blue cables in the component video inputs then I am not sure why it is not working as it absolutely should...

As for the HDMI, definitely sounds like an HDCP issue (despite what Samsung claims). I would recommend just using the component ins and forget about HDMI for the time being.

It sounds like you were saying that you tried the red, white yellow while the hdmi was still connected,if that is so,then try unplugging the hdmi first.I had my dvd/vhs recorder to my tv via hdmi and s-video both and the s-video would not work while the hdmi was still connected. Also as someone else mentioned the players settings need to be set no higher than highest resolution of the tv.
