I am looking to upgrade from a Nad541i to a bit more high-end cdp.
I've been reading and these two seem to get consistently very possitive reviews
and they are within my price range.
Any opinions on these would be appreciated.

What's wrong with the NAD? Getting tired of it? Money burning a hole?
CD players are over hyped, way over hyped.

I disagree, but debating without hands-on listening would be useless.
I did compare my against the Nad S500 and the S500 offers smoother
vocal reproduction and more subtantial mid range.

The problem is how you compared the two. Any bias controls implemented? Levels were matched so one doesn't have an advantage over the other?
If you noticed such gross differences, that would show up on the test bench too. The frequency response would reflect this easy. But, the designer would have to design in this euphonics.

No bias whatsoever. I connected them to my Arcam A85 and A/B bewteen them.
Being manufactured by the same company, they both have pretty much the same
output level.

But you didn't check to be sure? And no bias controls? Bias is not something you turn on or off, it is just there when you least expect it.
