View Full Version : CompUSA closing over half of it's stores
"CompUSA today announced plans to close 126 stores in the United States, leaving the computer retailer with 103 stores spread across 39 states and Puerto Rico. The process began last week with the closing of four stores and the rest will be shuttered in between 60 and 90 days."

I know this is old news, but I didn't see a thread on it. I had a chance to browse around the store in my area and so far the discount is only at 10-30% off.

Old news -- the one in my area is already long since closed.
Sucks. I'll so much miss standing in line with 100 other geeks in the cold or wet or both for that one cheap hard drive that they only have 99 of.

Geez, with Circuit City and regional specialty chains such as Tweeter also struggling it looks like we're getting closer and closer to Best Buy checkmating the entire retail side on electronics. Might as well have Reward Zone bar codes tattooed to our foreheads.
Too bad because it looked like CompUSA was starting to differentiate its product mix a bit more from Best Buy, and expand its selection of home theater products. Even with portable audio accessories, I saw that CompUSA carried a lot of items that I did not find at Best Buy or Circuit City. Their demo areas suck, they did stock some decent items like Monitor Audio and Energy speakers.

I know that some people are big fans of CompUSA, but not this hombre. I have NEVER received good treatment at the store located near me and everyone there is useless as could be. They purposely go out of their way to NOT help you. It's amazing. I, unfortunately, am forced to go there because they carry Apple products and I have to work myself up before going just to tolerate the level of stupidity that I know is about to occur.
I also am forced to go there often because I have a business account with them, which means I get "special" treatment and get to stand in line at the business counter, where tumbleweed rolls by each minute that I stand there. I ding ding the bell for service and about 20 minutes later a guy with an untucked polo shirt looks at me as if I interupted his Subway luncheon. Then we get to the 'checkout' part of the relationship and after about 10-minutes longer of scanning items and then clicking on things with the computer, punching in some stuff, and who knows what else, we finally get to the end of the deal. At last another visit to CompUSA has ended. Although, this is one of the easier visits....when I have to take something in for service....it's a whole day affair.

CompUSA stores have been falling one by one here in SoCal for a couple of years. I would have thought that those that remained open would try harder to improve service and value, but it seemed to go just the opposite. It was like they took the worst jerks from each closing store and sent them into the remaining stores to concentrate the chain-killing poison. Whoever managed this death spiral should be stripped and shaved in public, then shot with paint balls and ball bearings up and down the street.
Good riddance indeed. :dita:

Umm, it would be fair to say, however, I met several pretty decent Apple Specialists in CompUSA, who'd even go out of their department to assist me.
However, if they weren't in and I wandered into the Apple Store Within a Store, inevitably some moron would come over and tell me Apples couldn't do this or do that, or make up some flat out lies, like they won't play DVDs. I had one jackass tell me he couldn't recommend Apples because they were made in Chinese prisons. :incazzato:
I told him Apples grew on trees and Macs were made in Taiwan.

Fu*k'em.
I never got the mail-rebate on my CD-R'er 3-4 years ago.
and yes I checked and made sure everything was there.
I even ripped the sealed envelop to make sure I was going to get my money back.

It was Chrismas season a couple of years ago. I'm excited to go plasma with 36 month 0% financing. I walk over to the home theater section where no living employee is to be found. I ask for help in another part of the store. Somebody says that someone is coming. 20 minutes later still no help. Nobody can be found. I leave. They deserve to go out of business.
Plus Bestbuy just has more stuff and for me the stores are easier to get to.

Doesn't bode well for Apple. Even if I were to want to look at a Mac, now I have to drive an hour and a half to get to CompUSA. Once they're gone, the next time I see a store with an Apple product other than an iPod will involve an airplane!

My experience with CompUSA does not reflect the majority here -- I will mourn the loss of 2 or so terribly close stores.

Don't worry. We'll always have Walmart to fall back on. :ciappa:
Buwaaaaahahahahaha.......
I never really did much shopping there, but the few times I have, the CS was pretty bad. No different than BB or CC though.
I'm gonna drop in at my local store often and try to pick up a few items at a nice price.

I can only vouch for back in the day service, and it was good, but I have noticed that their staffing has been scaled back to bare bones.
