How do I know how many ohms a receiver have? I have a Denon AVR5600. How many ohm is my receiver? Also, I heard this receiver is not good for music. What receiver is? I need a receiver for a pair of Magnepan SMGa (just bought it) for karaoke (stereo) and I heard that this set of speakers need a 4 ohm amp/receiver. Any help will be great TIA.

if you were asking about the impedance on the input rca's of the receiver, this could be looked up, however...

I heard that this set of speakers need a 4 ohm amp/receiver.
if the speakers "Magnepan SMGa" are rated 4ohm, then the amp (your denon) needs the capability of driving 4ohm loads...

That's easy. It has zero ohms.

Most higher end Denon receivers are rated at 6-8ohms and can still drive 4ohm speakers like the SMG's. Just email Denon and ask them. If you have the owners manual the impedance rating should be listed in the specifications or speaker connection section. I dont think that the 5600 will have any problem with the SMG's even if its only rated at 6ohms.

Thanks guys!

What receiver is rated @ 4 ohms? More specifically, what receiver is rated @ 4 ohms and good for music. Like I say, some people said that the avr5600 is not good for music but good for HT.

both NAD (http://nadelectronics.com/products/av-receivers)and B&K (http://www.bkcomp.com/avr507.asp)have 4ohm rated receivers...

edit:
I am looking over the specs and can not find the rating for the B&K, but am sure they can run 4 ohm speakers...
the NAD states 2 ohm in their specs...

Thanks rock. What specific NAD series is good for my set up? I also live in Ohio (for now, moving back down south this summer...noooo more snow then).

do you only need 2 ch, or are you using this for ht?
if you are only going 2ch, you can get an integrated amp, or even components from either of these two for the price of the higher end receivers I listed...

if you are going full ht, I would highly suggest the B&K 507 (http://www.bkcomp.com/avr507.asp)

but if you do like NAD better, the T733 (http://nadelectronics.com/products/av-receivers/T773-A/V-Receiver) would be very nice too...

both would be great with music (way better than the denon imo)... NAD has been a little behind with video imo... reason I suggest the B&K over the NAD for ht...

on a cheaper note, not sure the power requirements of the magnepan's, but the T743 (http://nadelectronics.com/products/av-receivers/T743-A/V-Receiver) is also a very musical receiver imo... just lacking compared video features compared others...

Thanks rock.....I think I'll try the t743 for now. I won't get anything expensive until I can build a house.

definately audition it before you buy, but this is a very good receiver for music...

also, is this only for 2ch then?

you can find very good equipment used on ebay and audiogon...
I got a B&K PT3 series 2 & an anthem pva 2 for $500 shipped on ebay and am very happy with the performance, this would be a small step up from the t743 for 2ch audio imo, but it is only an audio preamp & amp...

Yea, I only need 2ch for karaoke. You got a good deal with your system. I saw a t743 on ebay for around $350. I'll probably get that bcuz I don't know what is a good amp/preamp.

I would check out the Outlaw RR2150 2ch receiver www.outlawaudio.com. Its rated at 100wpc into 8ohms and 160wpc into 4ohms and thats conservative. I read a review where it tested over 220wpc. Costs $600.
This is what you want in a 4ohm rated receiver. The power output should be 50-100% higher than the 8ohm out put. The NAD is a nice receiver but its 4ohm and 8ohm power out put are the same that is why I didnt buy it to use with my magnepans. If you want to drop some money you can get the Adcom GFR-700 AV receiver that I have. Its puts out 220wpc at 4ohm x 5ch. Lists for $2000 but you can buy a B stock from www.onecall.com
for $1299. I would be willing to sell mine for $1000, its only 3 months old. I'm wanting to buy separate amp and preamp with more power.
