Brian; many DVD players offer a dynamic range adjustment for Dolby Digital sound. From what you state, when it is off, the dynamic range ( loud and soft passages) are in the normal mode. As you increase those adjustments the range of those passages become less dynamic or in other words the loud passages are lowered and the soft passages are increased. Many receivers have a nitetime listening setting which does the same thing. You can test it out with a disc to see if you can hear the differences but I would leave it in the off position. If you have ever heard of "smart sound" on a tv set, the idea was to reduce the volume of the commercials that are recorded at a louder level than the programming automatically. There are tvs out there that have this feature under various names. This is just about the same thing as your player has.
