Does anyone have any suggestions for the best sounding, cost-effective way to interface an ipod with a home stereo?

A 'Y' adaptor?
Here's a good one...

I'd say use apple's ipod dock with the line out, or a third party solution like the sendstation (http://sendstation.com/us/products/pocketdock/lineout-fw.html)

Don't need a dock. You can get a line-level out right from the bottom of the iPod, straight to RCA:

Yeah, that works even better (fewer electrical connections).
