View Full Version : Give it up for Prince . . .
. . . at the Superbowel. He freekin rawked, even if he did look like somebody's maid.
The marching bands were a great idea. Very "football." Best halftime gig ever. (not that that's very hard)

Gotta respect a guy that can conjure up lightning, twice.
Actually it inspired me to listen to Parade and Around The World In A Day today.

I was a little perplexed by his set list. Okay, so he did a good rendition of Foo Fighter's The Best Of You, but why? I know he's gotta cram a lot into a 12 or 15 minute spot, but ain't he got a big enough back catalog to choose from?
And just a note to the ex-Up With People guys who are staging these halftime shows: stop with the over-exuberant fake crowd that comes in and tramples the field. It was already raining like hell and the last thing the field needed was a few hundred college kids stoked up on Vivran and Red Bull acting like a relevant act was performing.
Anyone notice Prince's phallic display in sillouette with his namesakes guitar?
And how 'bout that pregame show by Circe du Sole? What a contrived piece o' crap that was.
I'm glad Paul Tagliabu was snubbed this year for the NFL Hall Of Fame. He's responsible for this circus.

Note the other thread on the page on the same subject, entitled "The illegitmate spawn . . ." from Worf101. The group that I was watching the super bowl with all thought it was an excellent performance.

Prince has always been an excellent performer, and the super bowl was no different. Truly amazing. Circe de sole always has put on amazing, artistic shows, although their style doesn't seem too fitting for a football game.

Prince is a master of very many instruments, especially guitar. He is quite often underrated and often laughed at (see "game...blouses") However, the man is a genius and his halftime show demonstrated that he is able to entertain regardless. Often people who don't know what they are talking about (like people that have never actually been in a band or played an instrument, let alone in front of alot of people) can appreciate the fine art of entertaining a crowd of people and actually having people connect with your music. His set list was very well thought-out in my opinion as he went through a variety of popular songs and songs that he knew he could pull off and dazzle the crowd. This is what people want to hear when they are at a game. It's kinda like picking songs for a wedding reception...often times you just pick things that get people moving versus songs that are flat out genius.

Not a huge fan of Prince, but I'm not a hater either. I can certainly respect his talent in matters of both style and substance. That said, bottom line: anyone who's ever played a soundcheck and then had their gear moved knows that no matter if the board stays the same it doesn't matter--yer gears ain't in the same place!!! 6 to 5 and pick 'em whether anything sounds the same.Under those circumstances, to put on an energetic, entertaining and relatively complex show with the entire world watching takes big brass ones.
I gues nobody noticed that during the last medly change before he teased us with All Along The Watchtower, he totally missed about 4 or 5 notes that blared out of the speakers while his hands were all but motionless. I wonder who was playing that!
Overall I liked it but why hire Prince to play covers? Doesn't he have enough of his own music to play?

Are you sure he wasn't playing with his fretboard hand only? He was doing that a lot on Sunday night.

...to suggest there may have been some sort of technological chicanery or enhancements...No, no...never... they wouldn't do something like that...or would they?...Pay close attention to events like this...lip-synching is w-a-a-a-y too obvious these days so many times the vocals are "live" but the backing music or harmonies or guitar break is canned...
The reason for the quotes around the word live? Other times even the vocal is canned for the long shots, but for close-ups or maybe spoken parts, shrieks or other distinctly non-musical affectations the mic goes live...Ah! the magic of it all...
The rest of my obviously non-conformist opinion of the "performance" is in that other thread...

My only accolade (also great disappointment) is that no one did a little backside bowling on the rain-soaked stage...

Pay close attention, indeed. Although I have rarely seen this sort of tapping with a Tele, I see nothing that indicates a lip sync or any guitar sounds that don't seem to correspond with what his hand or hands are doing.
At around 2:35, pay some of that attention to the one-handed playing, are you saying that's not possible? Hardly.
Of course there have been lip syncs during spectacles like this in the past, but I don't see it here any more than during the Stones set last year. You'd have had to have been tone-deaf to have not noticed how out of tune their guitars were. And with this guy, why bother having a cable sticking out of the damned thing (& presumably going into a wireless remote unit) if they were going to pipe in prerecorded tracks? To make it look credible to those who would see the absence of a wire as a dead giveaway? I don't know about anyone else, but I'm always looking for that sort of thing. I didn't see it here.
Of course it's possible that such a performance is not 100% live, or even that it's mostly prerecorded; I seem to remember Gwen Stefani doing a blatant lip sync some years back. But I don't see it here. If anyone sees any evidence that this was not a live performance, please share it with us.

I did hear some guitar licks that I'm certain Prince did not play. At the time I thought it was the guitar player in the band. Did anyone tape the show?

...the bulk, if not all of my remarks were directed at the "event"-type of performance in general and the shenanigans that more-often-than-not accompany it...it was in that context that I replied to HyFi...

Yes, you can hammer-on just about any fretted, stringed instrument...Finger strength, fretting location, how "hot" the pickups are, in some cases proximity to the amps to take advantage of the pre-feedback sympathetic vibrations play a part...Heck, I can do it...I saw JH do it, I also saw him play with his teeth, tongue and with the guitar behind his back...
As stated in my linked response to the Worfsters thread, my problem with it (specifically with the half-time gig) was the repetiton of it and the posturing that accompanied it...sorta' like Townsend's windmill or propeller bit...looks cool once in a while, but after that while it's like it's phoned in...
jimHJJ(...and I tend to blame it more on the audience who delights at very sight of it...)

All of the above post are interesting about the preformance, but for a person that grew up (late teens-earlier 20's) on Prince's work 79-83 I feel was his best. Purple Rain put him on the Superstar level and most of the work after that IMHO was just fluff. If you are able to hear his earlier stuff, where he played all the music himself you may catch what I am saying. As far as the halftime show I felt I was watching the history channel. If this was the halftime show from 1985-87 (At Prince's Peak) this would be one of the all time best ever. For one of the most watched events around the world show casing the best of American style Football you should have one of the most current popular acts doing the halftime show:
Beyonce
An American Idol reunion Kelly, Ruben, Fantasia (even tho I hate the show)
Princes' act was good and could have been better if Tina Turner would have been brought on stage to help in the Proud Mary song, and annonced that Prince wanted to do a tribute to Jimi and play more than a few bars.

I watched it but did not listen to it. I had a Jethro Tull cd on during halftime.
I thought he would get electrocuted if he had a guitar plugged in.
I wondered if it was all dubbed in.
I though that behemoth guitar was cool looking.
If Richard Pryor was alive he would have made fun of his hair net.
I was suprised that they let all those people out there on that field.
How come there has been no discussion about Billy Joel's version of the Star Spangled Banner?
I'm hoping that next year they get The Flower Kings for halftime music.

Good choice...Tull beats Prince any day IMO...Gee I wonder if DSOTM would work?
I thought he would get electrocuted if he had a guitar plugged in.
Nah...no such luck...wireless technology doncha' know...besides he knew he'd be rollin' on a river (rim-shot please)
I wondered if it was all dubbed in.
I'd take a wild guess that some part of it was canned

The stage or the one in the shadow play?
If Richard Pryor was alive he would have made fun of his hair net.
If Richard Pryor was alive I'm sure he would have been doing something way more interesting than watching the $tuporbowl
I was suprised that they let all those people out there on that field.
Let them? Oh poor fellow, I'm sure it was choreographed for effect...Oh Golly, ain't we havin' fun, sloggin' thru astro-mud and gettin' $oaked...and even rained on
How come there has been no discussion about Billy Joel's version of the Star Spangled Banner?
No comment...musta' be replayin' earlier commercials at the time
I'm hoping that next year they get The Flower Kings for halftime music.
Nah...the Police, whydya' think their gettin' back together...I don't thinks Sting's lute music and madrigals is hittin' the demographic hard enough

A valiant effort on your part, but to no avail...this thread seems to have run its coarse.

Well, you see for people who don't really know why they feel a certain way or really do not have a way to defend themselves it's easier to just say that something 'sucks' rather than actually post something with any sort of intelligence or support. Even when I disagree with other people on here I still respect those that can put forth a valiant defense for their case rather than going round after round with little to support their opinion. Most people typically aren't quite sure why they feel the way they do and so they are convinced by what is either popular at the time or by some other lame convention. I think that if people actually gave more thought to their positions on things it would be a safer and more sane world. But that's just me I suppose.

It's just you and quite a few other people on this site. I hate to over-analyze some things -- especially when it has to do with music.
Sorry, but I didnt find it necessary to type 5 paragraphs to defend my position that Prince sucks. I think he's terrible, just my opinion, why should anyone else care if I think he sucks?
sorry if I dont like what seems to be your hero.
