And maybe somebody else too.

I'm using IE 7 that has a phishing filter: nice idea but ... MS, in their wisdom, have identified my stereo system diagram, below, as know phishing site. What a load of crap and slander!! :incazzato:

According to MS if a site, (like my stereo diagram), gets a "red" flag ...

"A reported phishing Web site has been confirmed by reputable sources as fraudulent and has been reported to Microsoft. We recommend you do not give any information to such Web sites."
Well don't worry: I don't ask for info and there's no way to give it. I'd love to know which "reputable sources" "confirmed" my innocuous picture as phishing site: he/she/they are slandering me. I'm not usually paranoid but I suspect malicious intent in this case.

Yah, geocities is a notorious phishing site. As a domain -- your pic excluded obviously. Just don't go browsing around there.

BTW, it's not just M$ -- any phishing filter would probably pick up on that.

Yeah, I'm weening myself off MS products (except XBOX, that rules).

I posted a thread a while back about them accusing me of pirating Windows after their poor operating system failed to make it through installation 3 times (and when it finally made it, incorrectly recognized itself as being a pirated version).

I've since converted to Linux - man, as a Vista RC1 user I can say Linux has surpassed Windows in eye candy and practicality. They've come a few light years since my last attempt in 2003. Once you get over the learning curve it's clear sailing. I use Windows now only when I have to.

I've been using Firefox for a few years now - It took awhile, but I prefer it to IE now. I use Konqueror a bit on my Linux install. It's pretty much Firefox though.
I've heard Opera is a viable alternative to Firefox, better in some ways, but haven't tried it yet.

I don't know if it's fair to blame MS for crappy products, or if it's just a reality of them not being able to be everything to everyone. I give them the benefit of the doubt, but that idiot on the hotline who accused me of pirating really left a bad impression here.

When it comes to Windows, MS really does get too many passes for poor product issues. Strong comeptition would be good for them.

As someone who is technologically challenged, and feels like a complete dolt whenever you guys starting talking "computer"...what is a phishing filter? Thanks.

MS provides an easy means to protest spurrious phishing blocks and warnings. I completed there form with -- you guessed it -- personal information, pointing out that my "site" neither solicited nor had any means to gather personal information.

MS got back to me with an apology emain within an hour and I saw that the filter was lifted immediately though MS said it might take 24 hours.

FA, et al: "Phishing" is the dispicable practice of garthering other people's personal info -- Ids, passwords, SIN's, bank account info, etc. -- for the purposes of identity theft or other fraud. Many websites are constructed to do this. Usually they pretending to sell you something or some online service, (rarely, they actually offer some trivial service while phishing). Most often people are directed to such sites by spam emails (-- do you really think that many viagra suppliers could survive?). Sometimes they make sophisticated attempts to pose as legitimate domains such as eBay or PayPal -- you have to be careful. Never supply info to any site at a link: always initiate your own login the usual way to your service provider.

Yes, it's true that plenty of phishing goes on from GeoCities sites, but there are also millions of legitimate GeoCities users, and MS is out of line if they are asking all of them to prove the benign nature of their sites. Personally I think someone maliciously report my link as a phishing site -- not likely anyone around AR, of course.

I like the SM-70 Pro's better overall than my former Bel Canto eVo Gen II. On the plus side: warmer, as much detail, slightly more dynamic in the midrange. On the minus side: not quite as transparent on the best recordings; less power -- 120 wt/ch @ 4 ohms vs. 200, but plenty for my listening levels.

In short, the Monarchys sound better on 80% of my recordings.

a phishing filter filters out possible phishing sites and mails,
now, that did help you eh?

nah, phishing is a kind of fraud, over the internet, the most common phishing i know is by mail,
you receive a message from a bank (there is a good chance you don't even have an account on that bank, but whatever) in the mail they say that "there is a problem" of somekind with their account managment, or something like that, and they ask you to go to their site (link is provided in the form of a "click here"-ish button) and it takes you to a identical clone of the bank's real site, so most people will just think, "okay, this is for real" and nothing is suspicious, but it's not, it's a clone, on the site they ask you to fill in all your account specifications (i.e. account number, your full name, alot of other numbers...) so then they (who are actually bad people out on your money) can acces your account and "steal" all the money and transfer it to their account (mostly in another country, so it's harder to find afterwards)

so they have all your money, you don't know about it, and you have nothing...
it's easy to regconize, after all, which bank sends a mail to ask for your account specs?
those things you do at the bank, not on their site.

anyways,
having that explained, now the topic...

microsoft blocks more things then it should do, just use something else, use a better browser to start with, firefox rules...

Keep them spinning,
Bert.

Thanks for the explanations. I figured that it was something like that. A couple of those bank emails are making the rounds here right now. I received two at home last week and a couple of my collegues got the same ones at work. One of my collegue's wife is a VP at said bank. She confirmed that the emails were a hoax...not that I needed confirmation.

I didn't realize that Microsoft had filters for that in place. So what do the filters do? Do they block people from accessing the site? How can I report a site if I wanted to...like the fake bank site for instance?

In the upper right area, click Tools > Phishing Filter > Report This Website
