Hi everyone,

I am looking to possibly buy some speakers soon. I am looking at floorstanding speakers, and my budget is around $1,000 per pair. Someone reccomended me the Polk RTI8, paired with a subwoofer.

Here is what I am looking for.

Loudness, I love loud speakers... I was looking at cerwin vega ve/ce-15's, but there is no dealer around here.

Bass - I also love bass... I do listen to lots of music with tons of bass.

I also of course want clarity, but I am a beginner to any "good" audio equipment, so I don't know anything about imaging and things like that.

I also saw some ribbon speakers. How do they compare to traditional speakers? What are the pros/cons (I know they don't have any low end usually, but a woofer can fix that, right?) Are ribbon speakers as loud?

if you want loud party speakers with bass, Cerwin Vega would be the best bet in my experience, you may also want to look at Pro Speakers, but I don't know who to point in that direction...

Focal JM Lab Chorus S 716 (~$800/pair), 726 (~$1100/pair), or 736 ($?)
I have the Chrous S 716 and they can get very loud and remain clear at high volumes...
they do have bass, but if you want party bass, a nice sub would help... I built a couple nice subs for ~$100 each, including the 2-10 sub I have in my ht system right now, and an 18" sub which owns for parties...

how far are you willing to travel?
when I was looking for speakers, I visited every audio store I could find on the internet within a 1-2 hour radius...

on a cheaper note, I recently hooked up my old college speakers (technics 15" 3-ways) to my anthem amp and b&k preamp and they sounded much better than I recall...

the amp and preamp were <$500 shipped off ebay, and thoes speakers were $200 for the pair brand new back in the mid 1990's... (yes lots of bass, and rather loud)...

what equipment do you have to run the speakers or will you be purchasing new equipment as well?

What kind of ribbons did you hear and what did you think? How large is your room and how is it furnished? What kind of gear will you be using to drive your speakers? Just how loud are you saying?

I am going to buy all new gear (****ty equipment right now)

As loud as you can get, with a quality sound (i hope that makes sense)

Someone reccomended an Onkyo

Any better recievers for maybe a tad less money? I cannot find vegas ANYWHERE in Jersey, are there any dealers in philly? (maybe someone has some input on that one)

If you mean headbanging loud you should stay away from any panel speakers. Remember, very loud is not necessarily good and almost never accurate.

I would suggest go with a preamp and amp if you are going for loud...
the only reason to go with an a/v receiver is if you want surround sound for ht...
you can always run multiple amps off a preamp and get a lot more for your money ;o)

e.g. my B&K PT3 s2 with the Anthem PVA-2 was < $500...
and you could get a cheaper amps which would serve your purpose just fine...
look at adcom, nad, b&k or rotel... which would all be able to play plenty loud while saving you the money of buying an a/v receiver...

They are supposed to sound pretty good. The guitar center only seems to have the earthquake sub, no actual floor speakers.

if thats the closest store, it may be worth it to call and see...
I doubt many other speakers will be able to compare to thoes duel 15" 3ways

Definitely CV is a good choice if you are just looking for low, loud and inexpensive... If you want/need more accuracy, then you might want to scour the used market for a used pair of Von Schweikert VR-2s. They will most likely set you back your entire 1K even used, but they are a heck of a lot more accurate than anything CV puts out. That said, sometimes raw sound can be fun on Rock...

If you have any interest in the used market, audiogon.com is the best place to look, IMO.
