is there a program to compress music files to fit more music on a mp3 player?

erm, from what filetype do you want to mp3?
and when you want mp3's, don't compress them too hard.

pretty much every program can rip.

There are more programs than you can shake a stick at.

Check out the latest version of the LAME software. I recommend you do variable bit rate (VBR) compression if you're going to make MP3s. Rather than coding the entire song at one constant bit rate (CBR), the VBR approach figures out which parts of the song need less bits (like quiet or monotone parts) and which parts need more bits (loud and noisy parts).

That way you get better overall quality for less bits on average.

If you're running out of room on your MP3 player despite using MP3's, you might seriously consider either (a) getting a bigger MP3 player, or (b) rotating some of them off of there.

Just in case...are you asking if there is a program like WinZip or Stuffit that lets you make the MP3 files you already have even smaller (even more compressed) to improve storage? If that is what you are asking, the answer is "No". It just doesn't work that way.

If you're wondering how to make smaller files from CD or to change the bitrate of MP3's you have to a lower bit rate to make them smaller (which also will reduce quality) then the above posts have begun to answer your question.

Well, you can always compress MP3s even more, but at some point the loss of sound quality becomes very noticeable.

Yeah, that's what my second paragraph was trying to say...

But I've had people ask me if general file compression (which is lossless) works on a MP3 players to save space. Seemed like a possible interpretation of the question.
