First of all I would like to say hi to everyone, as this being my first post.

But for this christmas I would like to get some kind of shelf system with a great bass sound and something that will rock the house =]

My friend bought the JVC Mx GT-90 a couple years back with 460 watts of power, and that thing really has a nice sound and wonderful bass, and it definately retailed for over 400. And now with the new 540 watt JVC Hx D-77, I'm not sure if jvc is concentrating too much on the looks of their systems, with not too great of a sound, and this one retails for about 300.. but I can obviously get them for cheaper somewhere. So do you know any other shelf systems I can look at (maybe JVC) and should I just try to get some of the older models on ebay such as the gt90 because that is a nice system.

The one my friend has has an 8 inch sub in each speaker with 160 watts powering each, but this new one has a 6-7 inch sub with 185 watts powering it, any recommendations?
I want something to rock the house! Thanks =]

I don't think anyone wants to be caught dead recommending a shelf system man..

Systems in a box are a little "low brow" for the kinds of equipment folks here are used to working with. :(

Give me an operating budget of 1000 bucks at least, i cant even think of a receiver i would stand behind recommending for 400 dollars ><

Edit>~

Rather than just being the condescending prude who actually spoke, i looked on ebay to see how close i could come to 400 bucks on a "starter system" .. it's not real close.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Denon-AVR1906-7-1-Channel-Dolby-Digital-DTS-EX-Surround_W0QQitemZ330062532913QQihZ014QQcategoryZ3 9793QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem $244 at time i looked.

http://cgi.ebay.com/CADENCE-XSUB-12-350-WATT-ACTIVE-POWERED-SUBWOOFER_W0QQitemZ250057892304QQihZ015QQcategoryZ 3275QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem $229

thats $730 dollars for some pretty low grade gear, + shipping, but i wouldnt recommend anything i haven't heard. My niece asked for "something to play her CD's on at college, and being uncle mike, wasnt having any part of a boombox or shelf system. I also had a Denon 1830 5 disc CD changer in the package, you could go with something less expensive, just make sure it has optical digital out.

The speakers are low brow, but they are pretty impressive for the price, i had them out the box playing around with them seeing whther i liked them or not for about 2 weeks, and with the 12 inch sub they performed admirably for system i figured would likely have a few beers spilled on it anyway. The 1906 for $244 is just a plain good deal, and that price will go up as soon as someone too greedy to pay the Buy it Now makes a bid.

Tried to go as cheap as i dared on the sub, but you dont want to go cheap there >< .. all in all this should give you something you can listen to with reasonable reproduction, nothing to write home about, but something your friends will be fairly impressed with the sound of.. and it will blow any "shelf system" off the shelf from a room away.

Hi Gabe,
Welcome to AR.com! It looks like this is what you are thinking about getting:
http://www.amazon.com/JVC-HX-D77-540-Watt-Bass-Reflex-Speakers/dp/B000FFQ4MS

I really mean this in the nicest way possible, but that JVC is the antithesis of what this board is mostly about. I'll admit I've never heard this system, but it is the exact opposite of what the vast majority of memebers on this board seek when it comes to audio. Take a look at the gallery and you'll get a good idea of the types of systems here:
http://gallery.audioreview.com/showgallery.php?cat=501

However, that does not mean that the JVC might not be perfect for what you are looking for and the purpose to which you will use it. But, I think systems like that JVC suck out loud, so I would advise against it. Most people on this board would be hard pressed to work with a $300 budget, but I pride myself on working with less. :D So this is what I would recommend, all of which is available at Best Buy:
Insignia Reciever ($79): http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7016481&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03031&id=1099394773324

Insignia Speakers ($49):http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7705307&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03043&id=1138085354138

Toshiba DVD player ($49):http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7609867&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03013&id=1130985150605

Yamaha Sub ($120): http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7688987&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03045&id=1138083504371

JVC does generally make good mini-systems and shelf systems, but that one you are looking at is an ugly childish toy. It is not a real stereo. Even without hearing it (I know, I know), I am pretty certain that it would sound tubby and schreechy relying heavyily on what is know as the "smiley face" equalizer curve, i.e. jacked up treble and bass. Again, I'm trying to be constructive here. I think there are better ways to spend $300 bucks, and the components above are a good choice. They look good, allow you to upgrade, and are not toys.

I have not listened to that setup, but from what i have read, this would be a nice option for $300

are you trying to stay in the $300 range or can you spend a bit more?
Paridgm Atom's are <$200 and sound very good for the size/price...
you can also find used integrated amps for a couple hundred...

also, if you are worried about watts... a 50watt NAD integrated will sound better than a 400watt jvc shelf system imo

hope this helps,
Mike

Is that JVC a radio or a really pissed off Transformer? :yikes:

If you're really into bass heavy music, the one you're looking at may be the way to go. If, OTOH, you're looking for something considerably more accurate (and far better looking), check into this Denon desk system with Mission speakers. Both are very well respected brands and it sounds pretty darn good. It won't have the boomy bass of the JVC, but it will sound a lot better.

I'm sorry to have to agree with some of the previous posts: This is not the best site for advice on a minisystem... It's pretty much like walking into room full of guys driving (and bragging about) expensive to super expensive high perfomance Cars from Corvettes to Ferraris and asking for advice on an economy Kia, Suzuki or Daewoo...

Anway all of that being said, since I'm only 7 year removed from listening to Mini-Systems... My advice (if your heart is set on a mini-system) is to check out Panasonic's Minis (I used to love those ones... they sounded and looked better than all the other ones I tried back then).... JVC is good a well (though really ugly IMO)... Sony was generally overpriced but good... Sharp was cheap crap.... And I wouldn't even give my dog an RCA or Magnavox for him to $#!+ on!

So check out Panasonic, JVC and Sony if you must... but if you want to take your listening experience to a whole other level... then try the suggestions by some of the earlier posters....

Haha thanks so much guys, I actually know quite a bit about audio and have a give or take $1200 setup in my living room.

I just need a good 500 dollar shelf system with alot of bass that can bump the party, and so I don't worry as much and don't have to resort to walking around and checking my more "official" system every 10 minutes so it doesn't get broken.

Thanks though, if anyone has anything to say, I appreciate it.
I want some nice sound and bass for mostly hip hop, RnB, oldies, and yeah just some dancing music that'll sound good.

Sorry I'm late as I've been on other sites for awhile.I would recommend the Denon DM33S mini system. Why?because I own one. It's around your price range of $500.I needed a mini system only and ended up with the Denon after much research. If you have anymore questions I'll be around.
