What's your budget for a shelf system? Sharp is not known for making quality audo products. Yamaha and Denon, for instance, make decent shelf systems if your just looking for simple CD playback.

well im not really looking for a new system but i would say abouy 200-250 dollars. i would want something to plug my ipod into and it has to have massive bass. right now i have a sharp cd-es600 and it gets distorted alot when i play it at higher volumes. but i really need something to make my neighbors complain because they always are playing there music all the way up and it starts to annoy me.

I have heard a couple onkyo systems which sounded decent...
perhaps get a pair of atoms (http://www.audioreview.com/mfr/floorstanding-speakers/PRD_120342_1594crx.aspx) and a used 2ch receiver or integrated amp
ofcourse a sub would for sure help, so add this guy...
