Most religion themed movies tend to deliver multilayers massage, unless it is for pure
entertainment. These movies walked a fine line between two........

True confessions (1981): Robert Deniro (a priest) and Duvall (police) are terrific.

Ten Commandments(1956): They donít make films like this anymore.

OH God!(1977): This movie completely made sense :)

Elmer Gantry(1960): Burt Lancaster earned his only Oscar.

Inherit the Wind(196): Proverbs 11:29, which reads....He that troubleth his own house
shall inherit the wind.

Hsitory of World Part I(1981): Scene of Last Supper is hilarious.

I just thought of another good religion movie with Robert Duvall and Farrah Fawcett (The Apostle 1997).

What about movies like Seventh Seal, First Power, and End of Days, do they count? That could be a whole 'nuther list.

Anybody remember the Martin Sheen. Santeria-based classic The Believers? Creepy...

Yes I remember that one. That was the kind of movie that when you came home from watching it you would turn on a few extra lights.

Well, you have to decide that :D

In most cases, there seem to be a gray area between religion, sci-fi and horror movies when religion is the subject. Exorcist or The Believers (havenít seen that one) might be good example of that genera.

I guess DaVinci Code and Stigmata will fit in there somewhere also :)

Yeah, Smokey, where does one draw that line, since an overwhelming amount of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy concerns itself with good vs evil? Literature too.

In fact that theme may cut to our very core, as rational beings searching for life's meaning, or striving to determine whether we are in some ways almost as special as God, or, conversely, not really that unique at all, just lost in our imaginings.

Besides movies dealing with religion, I love the religion -based, -related shows on Discovery, etc. No matter how conventional or far-out.

Great topic; thanks.

I have watched a really good religious movie, and it was called "Luther". It came out a couple of years ago. Ironically, these movies are not my cup of tea. I actually had no idea what it was about, but I had a free rental, so I gave it a shot. It is about how the Luthren church was founded, and the trouble it was in for breaking away from the Catholic fold.

I thought it was going to be very dry and "churchy" but quite the opposite. Very good budget, lots of filiming on location in Germany, excellent acting.

Anyway, give it a look. You might be suprised as I was to see how well made the film was.

Yeah, I saw that one for the first time when I was like twelve or thirteen. I remember being scared everytime I got a pimple that spiders would start crawling out of my face...

For hidden religious symbolism I recommend watching E.T. real carefull. It might surprise you....for example E.T. climbing out of the ambulance with the white robe-er I mean sheet..

The Lion King...

Well, if you recall there is a moment when Simba's father is in the clouds speaking to his son, which has a strong parallel between Jesus and God that father as well. Not only that, but the entire film has a strong Biblical context as well.

I also forgot to mention the recently released NIGHT WITH THE KING, which is about the book of Esther.

Well, if you're going to stretch it with abstract references like that, how about The Matrix? I thought the ties were stronger in that one, as opposed to the Lion King.

Yep, Matrix too. Religion-themed is the topic here. It doesn't have to be a blantant Religious sword and sandal epic to qualify... Right?
