Panasonic will sell the first Blu-ray DVD player-recorder in Japan in November, a company official said, months after rival Toshiba released a comparable product in a feud for the next standard of DVDs.

Interesting. I think that it has been brought up before, but why hasn't Sony gotten to market w/ a player yet? It would seem that they are going more for licensing fees and then trying to make money off the movie library that they own. But no the hardware?

While this is pure speculation on my part, I believe it is due to a lack of blue laser components. Sony needs all the parts it can muster for the PS3, and they don't have enough for those... As such, I think the PS3 is getting priority over Sony's standalone player eventhough it *may* still debut on Oct 25th as planned. I guess we will see if it actually comes out at that time but I am not optimistic on that one... I have mine on pre-order, so I am in wait mode like many others. :-(
