Is it true that you do not need a progressive scan DVD player if you already have a HD TV. And if so, why?

Nope, not true. Your DVD need to be able to send progressive signal by being so ratred, otherwise it doesn't.

Hi!

It depends whether your HDTV has a deinterlacer in it. I'd assume that all models that display HD will have a deinterlacer present, but you'd have to check yours to be absolutely sure.

If your DVDP is outputting in progressive mode, the deinterlacer in your TV will be bypassed. If your DVDP is ouputting standard interlaced signal, your TV's deinterlacer will kick in and convert the signal to progressive.

Contrary to what some people will have you believe, you DO NOT need a progressive scan DVDP to get the best out of your system. If your TV has a better deinterlacer, then you're better off skipping your DVD's progressive output and use the interlaced signal only. If your TV has a crappy deinterlacer and your DVDP has a better one, go with the DVDP's progressive signal.

How can you tell? Watch for yourself and decide which one you like better!!
