own a 2001 4:3 Hitachi 50" (50DX10B). During last hockey season i noticed near the center of the screen a light brown smudge spot. Not uniform, looks like a spill. Tried cleaning the screen and used S&V to calibrate again, but it appears to be burn-in or something.

I've read many posts and see some who had bug droppings on a tube.

Any ideas? Should i try to open and clean the tubes?

If the screen isn't white, it can't see it....but for hockey, it sucks!

Anyone ever opened a RPTV? Any other tests to verify burn-in?

Gotta get ready for next season.

TIA

I have a 45" rear projection Pioneer TV bought
way back in 1995. The screen is removable but it
hadn't been removed until a repair tech came out
because the TV was having problems. He cleaned
the back of the screen and the three tubes using just
water and a very soft cloth. The diference in picture
color and clairity was tremendous (this was done after
we had the TV for 5 years,,, and you would be suprised
how much dust can accumulate on the screen and
lenses.

If you can remove the screen on your Hitachi (carefully)
and clean the back of the screen and lenses using just
water and a soft clean cloth I think that it might remove
the smudge problem and improve your picture quality....
Good luck......vardo

Tarheel, do a google search on "cleaning a lenticular screen".
Also distilled water might be safer than using water out of the
tap, but I have used water from the tap at least twice and have had
no problems (guess where I live the tap water doesn't have
alot of minerals in it)...don't be afraid to give it a try....vardo
