Looks like I'll wait out the HD format wars but must semi retire my trusty Denon 1600. In the meantime I'm looking for recommendations on a new player. I need DVD-A and co-ax digital for sure. I am running Rotel 1067 and B&W 705's all around. Quality is a must but I am not willing to spend $1000 plus.
Any ideas appreciated.

Denon's 2910 is very tough to beat under $1K. If you're just looking for a decent stop-gap until the dust settles in the BluRay vs. HD-DVD wars, the DVD1920 is only $350 and still offers very credible performance. Panny makes a universal at the $300 mark that has received raves, but I don't remember the model number.

One note about the CA 540d, it only plays back up to 480p. This was a deal killer for me.

Hope this helps.

I've been extremely happy with my 2910 over the last year or so and give it another vote.

Just to correct Likeitloud, the Cambridge does not play sa-cd,dvd-a it does. That weakness aside i have owned the player for about 2 years and have been very pleased with it.It does not upscale like some of the others, but depending on your display, this may not be an issue. On my 51 inch crt rptv 480p looks very good.I do not know if you use your dvd player for cd's,but if you do,the 540d's analog outputs are very good.I have even heard from people that use it as a stand alone cd player.Check it out.

Is there something wrong with your Denon 1600? If not, I personally would just wait, and then buy a 2nd gen HD DVD or Blu-ray player once the dust settles a bit. The 1600 is an old DVD player, but it still is one of the best around. I guess I am biased as I am an owner too. :-) I doubt you will improve much on its performance (audio or video-wise) but you could spend a lot more to get less.

If you were not interested in DVD-A, I could have also recommended my primary player nowadays, the Toshiba HD DVD A-1. Even if you don't want to use it for HD DVD (in my case I absolutely do as it looks incredible), it is an *excellent* upconverting DVD player for a street price around $425 or so nowadays.

How about another vote for the Denon 2910....and if you want to spend a bit more the 3910.
