Is the SA8001 just an "American" version of the SA7001 that I've been reading about in Hi-Fi Choice, or is it a different machine (and maybe even a step up from the SA7001)?

Judging from the component type and layout, the SA8001 appears to be an upgraded version of the European SA7001 and is almost identical to the SA7001KI Signature. Of particular significance is the use of a large toroidal transformer that is similar to the KI model. Alternatively, the SA8001 can be thought of as a 2-channel upgraded version of the SA8260. I've own an SA8001 for almost a year now and to my ears it sounds much better than the 8260 that I remember, particularly as regards dynamics and bass, and I think the transformer has a lot to do with it. Like the 8260, the 8001 is rated by Stereophile as a Class A product.

I've had a chance to compare SA8001 and SA7001 side by side with a set of quality headphones, and honestly I heard no difference in quality, micro/macro dynamic.I really wanted to hear the difference cuz I had already purchased the 8001, but it just did not exist. SA7001 isnt available in US(or it wasnt at the time, anyways).SA7001 is a great CDP. If you like either one, then I would go for the 7001 and apply the amount you saved on some quality IC.Hope it helps,Oh, if you wanna buy my SA8001, I'll sell it to you for $700 shipped to 48 states.Best Regards,
