With cinema profits continuing to fall, how are they going to afford the new digital equipment, servers, networks, security infrastructure, etc.

I have read the new digital cinema spec and to be honest with you, I do not see how any theater chain could afford these improvements, much less insure that it would bring back business.

I also see that the movie industry has no real incentive to keep the cinema culture going. The cost of distribution and support is a major overhead contribution and not one the studios would cry over if it went away. They have already crippled the cinema industry with shorter and shorter DVD launch dates and know that most of their future income is in DVD sales. Profit margins would greatly increase for content providers if cinemas were not in the loop.

"download-and-own"

Shouldn't that be "download-and-rent"?
