Always liked the Friday Song of the Day threads, but guess it kind of faded away into the sunset. But I'm a retroman at heart, so here it comes again ...

Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3. Man, he's got a top flight rock band working with him the last few years. Aces all around. Perfect guitar foil in Jason Victor. Their teamwork this time even brings memories of Duane Allman and Dicky Betts at times. Just a beautiful and fluid intertwining of strings. But they get a little raunchy too, never keeping it too refined for long. Victor started playing with them on the Here Come the Miracles tour and now has been on the last 2 albums. Linda Pitmon has been playing with him since before Here Come the Miracles and is a very good no unnecessary frills rock drummer in the mold of the ready steady mod drummers of the 60s like Ringo and the more rambuctious Moon, or his reeled in replacement Kenny Jones, propelling the song along without getting in the way of the groove. I know she's a fan of Georgia from Yo La Tengo too. Perfect for his music.

Anyway, back to the song. I absolutely adore the whole album, but am totally loving the 8 minute closer on this new ...tick...tick...tick CD. It's called "No Tomorrow" and might be the best thing he's done since the early Dream Syndicate days. My song of the day, and week ... and maybe month and year too. It's a two-parter, a conversation between broken lovers, she in the first part, sounding a bit like Dylan's "Tangled Up In Blue", disillusioned, just wanting to hole up and fade away, and he in the second part, not wanting to let her disappear, with a glimpse of what could be their redemption toward the end, and with lots of that great guitar playing throughout with the Allman Brothers feel I mentioned above, at least until they take it more into that dirtier Velvet Underground core sound. Reminds me a bit of that first Television album sometimes. And some rocking Neil Young with the Crazy guys too. Good stuff. Great band with Steve Wynn--vocals, guitar / Jason Victor--guitar, vocals / Dave DeCastro--bass, vocals / Linda Pitmon--drums, percussion, vocals.

Picked up a new Tom Russell EP yesterday (The Pugilist), so I had to pull my favorite Tom Russell disk (Indians Cowboys Horses and Dogs) off the shelf, which led to listening to my favorite Tom Russell song, which is my Friday pick. Good stuff Maynard!

they got to the part with the cattle and the creeping things. they said i'm pretty sure we've heard this one before. don't it all end up in some revelation? with 4 guys on horses, and violent red visions famine and death and pestilence and war. i'm pretty sure i heard this one before. you in the corner with a good looking drifter. two cups of coffee and ten packs of sugar. i heard gideon saw you in denver. he said you're contagious. silly rabbit. tripping is for teenagers. murder is for murderers. and hard drugs are for bartenders. i think i might have mentioned that before.

he's got the pages in his pockets that he ripped out of the bible from his bedstand in the motel. he likes the part where the traders get chased out from the temple. i guess i heard about original sin. i heard the dude blamed the chick. i heard the chick blamed the snake. i heard they were naked when they got busted. i heard things ain't been the same since. you on the streets with a tendency to preach to the choir. wired for sound and down with whatever. i heard gideon did you in denver.

she's got a cross around her neck that she ripped off from a schoolgirl in the subway on a visit to the city. she likes how it looks on her chest with three open buttons. she likes the part where one brother kills the other. she has to wonder if the the world ever will recover. because cain and abel seem to still be causing trouble.

Hey, it's Friday again already! Time for a new song. But the burning question this week is, will I get one or two responses? Frankly, I don't give a damn!

OK, this week it's kind of a no-brainer because all I've been spinniig is Geek The Girl from 1994. And could pick pretty much anything because I love it all. But I'll go with the closer, like I did on Wynn's album last week. Because it's a somewhat upbeat song on a very melancholy album. Because it opens withthe line, "Why do people like stars, they're so far away." And it ends with the line, "I could do about anything."

I can't get "Two-Headed Boy" out of my single head.

A couple of regulars hyped this album as one of the best if not the best of the 90s. Naturally, I had to get it. If I could find it on vinyl, all the better. Well, acoustic sounds has it and On Avery Island and Jeff Mangum Live at Jittery Joe's all on vinyl!

Anyhow, I haven't tired of In the Aeroplane yet, but I have gotten to the point where I have favorite songs or spots in the album such as Two-Headed Boy.

But here's a strange twist. I discovered this week that I've had a copy of this album on cassette since 1998 or so. A friend of mine in the city where I used to live gave me a tape he made with Olivia Tremor Control on one side and Neutral Milk Hotel on the other. It was labeled only with the bands' names. I found the tape in a box of stuff from my last move. I had listened to the OTC side a little, but not the NMH side. Weird.

Imogen Heap, "Headlock", from her current album, Speak for Yourself.

I read a recent article in a trade magazine (Keyboard? I think...), in which she sounds really geeky about having done the whole album herself. "...after a while, I just stopped using external sounds, and started creating sounds in ProTools, not just manipulating..." that sort of thing. So I pulled it out again. Really good, but the first track is insanely catchy -- I'll catch myself thinking it long after the rest of the album is finished. I love when the tickly synthesizers kick in on the 2nd chorus (? I think). It's got a nice swagger to it.

Excellent. That album is one of my favorites of the last 10 years. I have it both on CD and on vinyl and IMO, the vinyl version really shines.

How about Pilot by the Notwist (I still don't know if you pronounce it knot-twist or no-twist). I hadn't listened to Neon Golden in a long time but heard this track on the recent "lossless" Slosh comp. I forgot how good that tune was and it sounded outstanding on the system in my new car. You can really crank it up because the recording quality of that track is exceptional.

He's living next the rails.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Martin DX1 for my daughter. She's been playing since she was ten (she'll be 15 in a couple of weeks). She's still using the cheapo Chinese made whatever-it-is that her Mom bought her and I think it's about time she had something decent. Anything else in the $400-ish range we should consider? Probably a moot point since she's really comfortable with the Martin but doesn't hurt to ask more experienced players I suppose. :)

minutes posting a lengthy reply to you, and when I hit submit, the friggin' thing asked me to log in! I did, but lost the entire post of course. What the h<a>ell is that all about? I use my Mozilla brower on this site all the time and never have to log in.

Anyway, you're a good dad Slosh. Playing a cheap guitar is no picnic, and a Martin is a dang nice guitar, even toward the lower end of their prices, which we know can get really expensive. I've never played a DX1 so I can't tell you anything about them. I have played a number of Martins though, and can attest to their quality, like they need my endorsement.

Anyway, I thought this model was closer to $500? I guess if you go to the factory up the road from your town you can get cheaper prices, or so I'm told. I went on e-bay and found only one listed by a guy in England and he was asking around $750 US for it. What a joke. I did find another Martin mode that I think would be an outstanding buy, and I would bid myself if I didn't already have 3 acoustics. It's a D15 that has just one bid at $500, and this sucker lists for about $1100 and retails for about $800. This is slightly used, but looks excellent. It's all mahogany too, and they play very nicely. It would be a step up from the DX1 for sure. It ends in about 5 hours, so I'm not sure if you'll see this. Here's the link

Anyway, I would also consider a Guild True American (I have one) for about $500, and Epiphone makes a nice Hummingbird, like the much more expensive Gibson model, for only about $350. She'd have to play it first, of course. Takamine also makes several in the $500 range and they make good quality instruments.

Also, my wife loves that comp of yours, so I guess I oughta burn her a copy, eh Slosh?

if she's comfortable with the DR1, then go ahead and buy it, because it's doubtful you'll find much better for the money. I did put that in my first reply. You know, the one that got dumped when I was reguired to log in?

I don't know if there's any special discount because they're local but the <s>Sam Ash</s> near me is selling it for $401. Not sure if that's on sale or they're clearing out old inventory or what. Nice thing though is I can take it directly to Martin if it ever needs any service. She did try some $400-ish Takamines and some Yamahas plus some less expensive Fenders and Ibanezes, but the Martin just plain old sounded better and was easier to play too. Sure, it doesn't have a fancy finish or ivory inlays on the fretboard, etc. but none of that stuff makes it play any better or sound better so who cares? Hell, even I sounded good on it and I've never even owned a guitar (but my brothers play and so do a lot of my friends so I've picked up a thing or two). But I've been told by a lot of people that once you get up into the price range I'm shooting for it's pretty hard to buy anything bad anyways. Also a friend of mine has a nice cheap Epi that he got ten+ years ago that sounds great and seems well made but he says they've let their quality slip with the entry-level stuff in recent years and would avoid them now, but I know that's just one opinion.

BTW, I'm not surprised your wife enjoys that comp. I originally did make it for a woman after all :)

edit: Actually it was at a place called Dave Phillip's Music and Sound, which I believe only has stores in the Lehigh Valley. Not sure if they have some kind of relationship with Martin but I see on the Sam Ash site the same model is listed at $499. Gonna pick it up today :)
