The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster. Saw her last Sunday in support of Eric Bibb.

She was accompanied by bass and drums, both by women and all three brilliant, but Ruthies' voice and guitar work was amazing, she played the piano aswell, worth looking into her work.

And Eric? Well.:6:

Atlantic R&B: 1947-1974 Box

From Stick McGhee and Professor Longhair through Joe Turner and the Clovers. From Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin all the way to the Spinners. How the hell can anyone hate 8 discs of this stuff. Lot of less obvious choices as well really make this collection something special. Right now, The Persuaders are singing Thin Line Between Love & Hate. This stuff gets criminally overlooked when people get obsessed with Stax or Motown, both great labels in their own right.

Indeed.
I have just stumbled across some Scotish Band lead by Kenny Anderson called King Creosote. How I missed them for so long. Absolutely fantastic. A vast array of songs flirting with different genres...

I started off today with LZ's, Physical Graffiti. I haven't listened to this in a while and haven't ever been thrilled with the production. However, today I was listening particularly close and although it's not the greatest production it does have a live character to some songs that was nice. It's hard to describe, a bit raw and more of an openness than most.

From there I was all over the place, Steve Perry, Richard Marx, Paul Hardcastle..... I was in a Sunday afternoon mood and really into my system today.

Any Dr. John fans out there??

Absolutely. I don't have much or know which albums to look for but I've liked what I heard and have a greatest hits thing. I saw him at a Blues festival in Atlanta. Little Feat was there, BB King was headlining, I don't remember who all else but Dr. John came out and stole the show in my opinion. His set also had some of the best sound of any concert I've been to and this was one of those outside ampa-theater venues. The horns, congos, everything was clear and balanced. Good stuff. I don't see much of his stuff around at the music shows or I'd probably have more of his albums. I guess people hang on to them..

Really digging this new release, Goodnight Oslo by Robyn Hitchcock & the Venus 3. Lyrics from an off kilter subconscious and a backing band that for all intents and purposes is just over half of R.E.M. --R.E.M.'s Peter Buck (who's worked sporadically with Hitchcock for more than 20 years) on guitar, Minus 5/Young Fresh Fellows/R.E.M'er Scott McCaughey on bass and Ministry/R.E.M. vet Bill Rieflin on drums. This one's released on Yep Roc Record and that label has a write up page that plays a sizeable interview with Robyn talking about the album with tracks in the background. Interesting and and interesting way to market.

So Long, So Wrong, Forget About It and New Favorite sound great...probably the only flaw that comes to mind is the sibilance. Very nice separation of instruments and placement of Alison's voice. Every Time You Say Goodbye sounds nice enough but a little duller overall and not as clean on the separation of detail. Now That I've Found You seems to be just right. Easy to listen to and Alison's voice sounds perfect. It's like the Chicks' Little Ol' Cowgirl...maybe not the ultimate on the instruments but the lead voice sounds terrific.

I weeded through a couple LP's out of the stacks I haven't evaluated yet.
One was a copy of Toys In The Attic. I have the CD but wanted to hear the LP. This is one instance where the LP is quite a bit better. I have an early CD, not sure if this has ever been remastered.
ZZ Top, Fandango.
Beatles, Yesterday and Today, this copy is mono, not sure if all are. Actually Drive My Car is on there and I think that's on my Rubber Soul CD in stereo, so what's up.
Jefferson Airplane which was too bad to listen to and I have a remaster any way.
Then I went to disc and listen to Kingfisher Sky, Hallway of Dreams.

Hey, I got Within Temptation, Black Symphony on Blu-ray. It was an import and the most expensive BR I've purchased to date. The American version is only DVD but includes a CD. I bought the import for Blu-ray but saw it had two discs and thought I was also getting a CD. Well, no, it was a DVD of extra stuff but the stupid thing is PAL and won't play in my BR player. I have a LG laying around that plays PAL, I might hook it up some day to see if I'm missing anything. Good concert video though, they are playing with Metropol Orchestra. Wow, the Mac daddy must have taken a hefty hit to put it in the shop. bummer...

In the past days I've gone from classics like;
Captain Beyond, Sufficiently Breathless, which I liked really well. It gives you that blacklight and incense feel.

Michael Olfield, Tubular Bells 3, I find myself throwing this on comparitively quite often. It's very good, not only is the music good but there are frequent changes throughout the album, it may be sort of Electronica then break into the female vocalist into a guitar driven part.

Then I'm going through a bit of a Metal stage after acquiring In This Moment's, Beautiful Tradgedy which led to In Flames, Sense Of Purpose, to Amon Amarth, Twilight Of The Thunder God. And FP sent a hunk of Metallic comps to crush me further.

From 1936 to 1958, Carl Stalling was the chief composer-in-residence at the Warner Brothers animation studios, which produced the Buggs Bunny cartoons and their kin. Stalling was an immensely gifted and productive musician, and he used elements of classical, jazz, folk and other melodies to produce a patchwork quilt of sounds that were seamlessly integrated into the deftly drawn characters. Within the music are all the exclamtions, screams, whistles, hoots, crashes and whirrs, giving the music a vitality that reminds listeners why these were truly "Loony Tunes".

Bert, good to hear from you btw, I haven't the faintest idea what the problem is. The unit gets power and lights but no juice. Having just recently moved I haven't had a chance to make it back to the other side of town with ol' Blue Eyes but rest assured that it's high on the agenda.

Mistah Peabody, good eve sir...Yes, I've gone Blu and the Sony does it with aplomb. I'm likin' the fact too that each week more and more classic reissues are coming out.

Auri, I'm learnin' to deal with adversity...the transition to U-Verse wreaked all hell on my computers but things are a lot slower out here in the country....so it'll all come together soon enough...

In the meantime I'm enjoying a night on the East Broadway Run Down courtesy of Sonny Rollins...

OK, this might give some one a laugh but I like this album. I was rummaging through my CD's and ran across Survivor, Eye Of The Tiger. I haven't heard that in I don't know how long so decided to throw it on. This is really a good album, maybe a couple average tracks but full of good ones. It's also interesting to hear an older disc like that, things stand out that you wouldn't notice back then like the real drums. Back then they didn't bump the bass up much either, despite that the recording wasn't so bad.

I forgot the singers name but I guess he may be out of a job again now that Anheiser Busch was sold. Maybe the new owner will continue the Real Men commercials.

God Damn Rock 'N' Roll: A Tribute To The Cramps

A fun listen. Of course, the Cramps did all these songs so well, it's hard to see why you need to hear these mostly fairly faithful versions. Cramps songs tended to the simplistic so there's nothing here the bands can't handle and most of the songs would be hard to make sound bad if they tried. So mostly, you just get an extra little bit of fuzz here, maybe a newly cranked up guitar part there. Still fun to hear bands like Queens of the Stone Age, Jesus & Mary Chain, Hellbillies and others, including a good chunk of unknowns tear through some great tunes by a great band.

This is a lovely CD, introduced by my Egyptian friend who owns and runs a coffee house downtown. The place is laid out in comfortable sofas and tables. Beautiful women and grateful men sit and loll about as Robin puts it on. Starting with Paul Schwartz and Isobel Griffiths' rendition of Handel's Ombra mai fu, the choir breaks out in a peal that makes you want to stop for a moment and breathe in...life!

This disc is not for purists, who will be off put by the introduction of synths which take these immortal pieces, such as Handel's Sarabande and Puccini's La Rondine to a contemporary place. Suspend that aside, dear listeners, for the playing is deft, subtle and not at all out of place.

I pulled this puppy out the other day as I was digging through the pile in search of some "back porch" music. Dana Owens, AKA Queen Latifa, released the album in 2005, to no little acclaim. Her intonation, phrasing and control are all superb evidence that the lady is a true, blue professional. Likewise, the accompanying arangements of her big band swings and blows right into your ears with a rare suppleness and zest that just isn't heard that much nowadays. A very good listen and lots of fun!

While I was checking out some Madeleine Peyroux samples I ran across this group called Pink Martini which I liked a lot. I think it's a group, maybe the singer is named Pink. Anyway I'm putting one of the albums on my hit list.

I also listened to the Puppini Sisters which was very interesting. I don't think it's for me but some of you might want to check them out. Sort of a modern day Andrew Sisters thing. In fact, one of the albums I checked out has covers of Mr. Sandman and Boogoe Woogie Bugle Boy.

Anne Bisson - Blue Mind

The first time you hear Bisson's crystal clear voice, you'll likely get shivers down the spine. Melodies soar with a delicate confidence through changes that are a unique blend of late night jazz and vocal accomplishment. Just picked up this little ditty. Such pleasant happy music. Hadn't knowingly heard Charlie Byrd (guitar) before although from the liner notes I see that he helped put bossa nova on the map with Stan Getz. This album is live and has latin influence throughout, although it's more in the jazz trio mode than the bossa mode. It's got some swing, some latin flare, and some more standard jazz playing. Picked it up new for $3 (CD).

Which brings up a question I've had for years and years but never figured out - surprising since I've bought so many. What's the deal with cut outs? This disk has a little hole drilled in the case rather than the cut out. But I've never understood why cut outs exist in the first place. Anyone?

Kennedy, AKA Nigel Kennedy, is a violinist of first rank, and his performances are simultaneously reviled and revered by lovers of classical violin who are looking for a fresh interpretation of old music. Traditionalists may well hate him: his tone is sometimes excessive, his speed nearly manic; but for those who see works of the old masters as living documents, Kennedy's approach might not be so inappopriate. In the recording presented here, Kennedy plays a number of standards, including the D minor Concerto for Two Violins, with a restraint and presence that is nearly haunting. Flourishes of exuberance are abundant, but not to the extent that they dominate the rest of the performance that is supple, rich and very absorbing. The recording is up to par with the performance, with a quiet background that is nearly black and a stage that is well contained and not at all distracting. Folks may be put off by Kenndy's punk-rock persona, but this is no flunky manque; Kennedy is a scholar who knows his music as well if not better than most, and he serves it in grand, delicious form here. Bon appetit!

Documentarian Albert Maysles shot this film, Gypsy Caravan, in Macedonia, India, Macedonia, Spain and North America, which is a vivid and evocative snapshot of the Roma People, their culture, and their amazing and fresh musical heritage. Little need is there to remind us that the Roma, otherwise known as The Gypsies, are a diverse civilization that has been continually maligned throughout history. Their music pours the pathos of these people out, expressing all the hopes, the suffering and the joy of a hardy and indominatable people. Their faces, at once noble and beautiful and expressive carry the lines of life with a quiet dignity. This movie is a feast for the lover of a good story and of music with real vitality. I watched it this morning with my wife, immersed in my own self-pity, and regained some strength from their example. I was reminded of what I learned (but momentarily forgot) from patients who have survived in the face of so much hardship and pain: that resiliency comes when the steel is beat and the fire is the hottest. If you're feeling down, watch this movie my friends, and restore yourselves.

OK SERIOUSLY..

My wife has become a huge Lucinda Williams fan (yay! good music!) so we've been listening to her recent Live album a LOT. The whole family. In the car, at home.. We love it. Damn she's good. Awesome sound too. I was digging through my cd's because I thought someone sent me a Lucinda Williams comp years ago, but alas, none could be found. That's ok, I'm sure we'll have all her albums here before too long.

I've often wished I had the bootleg of the Lucinda Williams show at Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth, Texas, in 2001. It seems to float around the bootleg-trading circles, but I don't have bootlegs to offer up.

In memory of one of the best female blues singers.........R.I.P.

"From the opening sting of Criss Johnson's guitar through the openhearted, deep-soul balladry of "Nothing Takes the Place of You," Force of Nature forces the listener to hear Koko Taylor with fresh ears. Though Taylor has long claimed the title of Queen of the Blues, such coronation seemed more a matter of lack of competition than depth of artistry, a reflection of raw vocal power rather than stylistic range – her blustery swagger limited to variations on the theme of "Wang Dang Doodle."

Force of Nature, however, finds Taylor attaining a royal level of accomplishment, one worthy of Muddy Waters, Bobby "Blue" Bland or any of the various Kings. While it might seem that the last thing the world needs is another version of "Born Under a Bad Sign," the tribute to Albert King finds Taylor and guitarist Buddy Guy tearing into the tune as if it were a sizzling T-bone, with Taylor spurring Guy into a more spontaneously charged performance than often marks his own recordings. Even more familiar and more inspired is "Hound Dog," sparked by a rhythmic arrangement that lets Taylor make the song her own.

The range of the album's material shows Taylor's mastery over several shades of blue, with her phrasing on "Fish in Dirty Water" matching the full-bodied horn arrangement of Gene "Daddy G" Barge in both sophistication and command of dynamics. She swings with sprightly assurance on "If I Can't Be First" and so thoroughly transforms "Bad Case of Loving You" (the Moon Martin-Robert Palmer hit) that it takes a verse or so to recognize the song in its grittier groove.

For all of the album's career-capping, audience-broadening ambition, the music never suffers from overcalculation or crossover contrivance. There's a charge of immediacy throughout that's more common to the midnight bandstand than the recording studio, particularly in the interplay of co-producer Johnson (one of Chicago's finest young blues guitarists, though he more often plays in a gospel context) and keyboardist Jeremiah Africa. As for Taylor, there's nothing pretty in her gravel-gargling tone, but she sings with a conviction that shakes life into even the hoariest blues clichés and makes them ring contemporary and true."

Some really nice arrangements and recording on this one. The songwriting is really good too but subject to personal taste as is Victoria's voice.

The hero here, IMO, is the producer, Paul Fox. Most everything I've heard with Mr. Fox's name on it (10,000 Maniacs - Our Time in Eden, Semisonic - The Great Divide) is infused with a delightful and enormous musicality.

Another beautiful recent purchase. Recorded in 2005 with a near 90ish Bebo Valdes (piano) and Javier Colina (bass). Cuban jazz, warm, friendly, romantic, timeless. First off, I was surprised at the quality of this live recording. Only a duo on stage, and the silence of the audience during the pieces is stunning, they must have truly been captivated. It's mostly cuban jazz, there's some playing around. a little boggie woogie piece (Bebe's Blues) for example. Even a little impromptu audience sing a long. If you find yourself turning to that over-played Buena Vista Social Club album, this is a highly recommended alternative.

Hybrid.

A few night back, I stopped by my local McD for a quick snap. The place was very quiet and the kids in the kitchen were playing some techno. I like what I was hearing and ask what it was. Hydrid.

This morning I check this stuff on You Tube. Good but do not know if it will hold to repeat listening...

So, does anyone has any recommendation of other techno in a similar style that could be of interest to yours truly?

Thanks,

Recently picked up something called Escala. I can only compare them to TranSiberian Orchestra except it's not Christmas music and it's a whole lot better in my opinion because I don't really like TranSiberian. Escala is a lot of violin, other orchestral type accompaniment with modern drums and a couple tracks have guitar. One of my favorite tracks is their cover of Kashmir which features a taste of guitar from none other than Slash. I'm sure he was added as an attention getter, smart move.

Sorry, Doc, I'm not much into Techno. The closest I probably come is Michael Ofield who you might like, Tubular Bells, portion which was made famous as the theme to the Exorcist. You might also like Manheim Steamroller. I'll have to check that Hybrid to see how they sound. I've got some Rob Zombie and Rammstein but something tells me this isn't quite your style :)

I'm finding this one easy to like. Only a couple listens so far. Lots of good songs. Sometimes seems to subtly channel Queen and The Who's rock opera mode. As an album, maybe its a bit jumbled from one track to the next. 18 tracks'll do that. They're certainly clearing the air on some issues; probably would have been more timely a year ago. It's punk sentimentality would seem more appropriate if, for example, Palin were VP. 3 stars.

Yep, The Residents! Hard to believe these odd-ball-geniuses have been at it since 1972, but that's what happens when you're not paying attention. This album (Petting Zoo) was released in 2002 and is a best of compilation. It includes all the favorites: How to Get a Head, God's Magic Finger, Wolverines. The Residents are an enormously talented and quirky band, and I believe they've appeared with Penn and Teller in various shows. Not for the faint of heart or dull of brain, The Residents are simply and truly the real deal!

Some might cvomplain that the latter music of Vangelis is a rehash of the same thing. While certainly the edge of technology's shore is certainly played out, rare gems do pop up every now and then; and it is the canny one most familiar with that shore who recognizes it when it does. Vangelis is one such musician, with numerous albums to his credit and a sound that is uniquely his and his alone. Critics have derided this album as trite, and a parody of his earlier bombastic compositions and the schmarmy, cloying oeuvre of yesteryear. Be that as it may be, this is the music that fans of Vangelis throughout the world have come to love and admire. Voices will make them all a bit happier for it just the same!

I guess the great music engraved makes it worth it though. If the master was any good this would be an album that really needs remastered. If there's maybe over a half dozen remasters of Court Of The Crimson King then give us one Bridge of Sighs.

Catchy, sharp yet ragged power pop/punk record from a band that's been around for quite a long time but hasn't put a full length out for like a decade. This one is like an old friend I can in no way be objective about. For me, the best thing a great musician ever did. I've got sentimental attachments to this thing as well as an admiration for it musically. For those who like his earlier stuff best, this one may be trouble as it really did signal the start of his getting weird. For someone like me who enjoys a wide range of his stuff, this one hits the sweet spot right down the middle.

Edit: Here's a Quote from Wikipedia

"In 1971, riding on word-of-mouth reputation that included praise from John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Merle Haggard, and an alleged invitation to join the Rolling Stones, Buchanan gained national notoriety as the result of an hour-long PBS television documentary. Entitled The Best Unknown Guitarist In The World, the show led to a contract with Polydor, for which he recorded five albums, one of which, Second Album, went gold,[9] and after that another three for Atlantic Records, one of which, 1977's Loading Zone, also went gold.[2][10] Buchanan quit recording in 1981, vowing never to enter a studio again unless he could record his own music his own way.[citation needed]"

I just came across this album, her first in 19 years. It came out toward the end of last year. If you like Grace Jones, don't hesitate. She's not lost a step. Her voice still sounds great and she can still mix light reggae rhythms with ominous bass and menace to match her often cold, calculated vocals. Lots of collaborators, like usual suspects Sly & Robbie to new to the Grace Jones camp people like Brian Eno and Tricky. A bit of variety on this one with a couple laid back Caribbean tunes which almost come across as sentimental, but plenty of steel and thunder as well.

Folktronica, IDM, whatever you wanna call it. Blend of acoustic and electronic sounds, ultra laid back, sparse. Reminds me of the first Mum album but even more mellow. Really good if you're into this kinda ****.

This looks interesting. I'll have to check this out over the weekend. Someone apparently dropped off their garage rock/punk CDs at Goodwill and I was the happy beneficiary of most of them. Here's an example of what I picked up and have been listening to:

The Nomads - Powerstrip

I'm still sinking my teeth into this one, but after seeing them a bunch on the Garageland blog, I had to pick this one up. It's pretty good on first listen, and definitely influenced by 60s garage rock.

nobody,
If you havent't already, be sure to grab a copy of this LP.
You will absolutely love this album, and I certainly can't get enough of it.

Highly recommended for anyone who can listen to hip-hop and R&B.

Used Kids: Yeah No

Band is comprised of guys from the Modern Machines and the Erggs, but doesn't really sound a ton like either. Probably closer the Modern Machines. Pretty straight ahead rock stuff for the most part. A little sloppy, catchy in spots and pretty good. I saw 'em play early this summer and grabbed a 7". Seems they are giving the full length away with free downloads for now until the official release comes out. Click the cover if you wanna listen.

In the early seventies, my grandmother sold the house at the beach. She spent the remainder of her years traveling and enjoying life. On one trip, she went out west, towards San Francisco, Vancouver and points in between. When she returned, she gave me a Folkways LP from the Smithsonian Institution: a collection of Navajo and other Native American music. This collection is a far departure from the soothing and easy-on-the-ears tunes of the likes of Kater and others; the music is raw, and visceral and very personal.

The Folkways Recordings started in 1948, when Moses Asche (1905-1986) and Marian Distler (1919-1964) set out to record authentic music throughout the world, making themselves years ahead of their time in opening listeners to World Music. The tradition continues and is exemplified by this wonderful compendium: The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan. This recording includes music from all along the route: China, Iran, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, etc. The music is recorded quite beautifully and is a true tapestry that will fill you with all the scents, scenes and sounds that make that part of the world truly wonderful and awe inspiring.

First I ever heard of Kevin was when he was the opening act for Bonnie Raitt. He was very good and got a great response from the crowd.

He does some great cover work on his Peace....Back By Popular Demand Album.

I like KM quite a bit. He came here for the Keep it Simple tour. Very pleasant, quite musical and flexible in voice, performance, etc. He was a real class act and I'd like to see him again!

We're agreeing way too much lately my friend. The only one I don't have is his "Suitcase" album although I did get 'Rita' from our fine friend Sticks, on a comp.

Been listening to the reissue of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. I'm not a huge Neil Young fan, but I've always like this album a lot. The reissue, according to the insert was remastered from the original analog 'Because sound matters'. The CD is also HDCD but I haven't tried it out on my HDCD player yet. The sound is improved over my original release CD, most obviously louder...er...dynamic. But also very obvious is that the highs sing out and are more resolved. My first thought was, 'whoa, this sounds bright.' It does do the music justice though. There's great guitar here and the remaster brings that out. Selling on the inexpensive side for new CD's which is nice.

Also been listening to one from Bil Callahan, aka (smog). There's some beautiful simplicity in his songs. And, some direct and personal lyrics. e.g

I dreamed it was a dream that you were gone
I woke up feeling so ripped by reality
Love is the king of the beasts
and when it gets hungry it must kill to eat
Love is the king of the beasts
a lion walking down city streets

I tend to like him when he sounds more spare, and the album pulls out some sweeping strings. They do add a melodic touch. Most would probably prefer them. He's got a great deep voice. I see NPR has a mini-live session on line (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106471639). Also trying some enhanced album art.

Aphex Twin: Selected Ambient Works 85-92

Seminal album that you probably either have no interest in ever hearing or you're already heard. Not strictly ambient but laid back throughout. Easily one of my favorite electronic releases of all time.

Yeah, I gave this a listen. Interesting as a fan, but no way I'm pulling this out over most any of their official releases from the era.

But, always love the Pettibon art.

The other night, the Wife was flipping through the channels, looking for something to spice up the evening. She stumbled onto this: perhaps the best thing I have heard in a very long, LONG time.

The Slackers: An Afternoon in Dub

Have seen these guys live a couple times and enjoyed them but have rarely listened to their records. Live, and I believe on most of their records, they tend towards uptempo ska. This release is an about face. It's all jazz inflected soulful instrumental dubs. Very laid back and bass to shake down your walls. Really nice music to sit back and have a smoke to. I guess its been out of print on CD for quite some time from the prices I see asked for it on some sites. But, there is a newly released vinyl version available cheap that I'm playing right now.
