Hi Tek - Hi Teknology2 on wax

waited too long to get this album. Nice & Smooth but can be hard hitting on some tracks.
Enjoying it quite a bit, except for the track with Busta Rhyme.

nobody just might enjoy this album.

Glad you found that out. I have been playing around these last weeks with two subs from REL. And I am finally happy with the integration. I found that many subs aren't really subs just mid-bass enhancers and set much too loud. Boom, Boom, Boom. It smears everything.

Anyway after a busy week getting myself back into work mode I have the house to myself today. So enjoying this right now:

too much bass sucks up the rest of the music, but too less bass isn't good too, then the highs suck up everything...

The thump for the sake of thump is basically what turned me off rap in the frist place. Back when Dr dre was all the raveand every kid spent every penny on putting half a dozen subs in a Honda CRX.
Hip hop seams to be getting away from the mad thump, and getting a bit more into the smother melodies. I have really started to enjoy it again. Artists like K-os.. ect

Ramsey Lewis Trio - The in Crowd
not a great recording, but gotta love chit chats/laughters and bottles clinkin' in the background.
Highly recommended for Jazz lovers who dont get caughtup in the recording quality

Macy Gray - On How Life Is

I always liked that crazy girl featured on some CDs, but havent really thought about getting her album until last couple of months. This one is surprisingly good. I caught myself turning it up much louder than I shoulda been.

The album is Funky, Soulful, Wacky, but I was more suprised on how well it was produced. Makes me wonder how good it sounds on MC SACD. I like this version of the song "I've Commited Murder" better than the remix I've heard. I probably should've got it on SACD, but I believe she has another album on the higher rez format. I'll be back.

Dave like to see the Willy Porter there- incredible acoustic player and songwriter and not a bad singer either. I met him after a couple of shows, he's a super nice guy. If any of you get the chance and are into the guitar you should check this guy out. He plays a lot of small venues which makes the experience even better. From Milwaukee.

Andrew Bird- Weather Systems- Andrew is classicaly trained on the violin and does a lot of sampling, whistling. He tours by himself or with his drummer Dosh also incredible live. :17:

Ray Lamontagne- Trouble- Amazing singer introduced to me by a friend in Pittsburgh. He sounds a little like Joe Cocker.

Coleman Hawkins- Nighthawk- One of my personal favorite tenor sax players.

Got this album last weekend, and I finally got to it tonight. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

when I bought the album, I didnt even check to see who it was. Love the cover so I just picked it up for $3. I figured if I didnt like the music, I'll just store this cover in one of my record frames and put it up on a wall. I think I spin it instead.

Well after reading a post about fixing scratched CD' s I went rhough my collection attemting to repair some of my CD's when i came across Primus Pork soda although without having Les Claypool on the bass there really is nothing to listen to, but omg the way he plays the bass guitar makes it all worth listening to again.

Other than listening to Pandora.com, while online, I've been listening to some of my older rock & roll. Unless you're in your late 40's or into your 50's, you probably won't know these groups. Even if you are my age, you may not know them! :)
I've been listening to:

Salisbury by Uriah Heep
It's A Beautiful Day by It's A Beautiful Day
Silver by Tranquility
and listened to a more recent cd called Heart Of The Night by Spyro Gyra (smooth jazz).

I'm spinning a cd right now;
Bossacucanova - Uma batida diferente

and i'm still using my pc, one week ago, I ordered a marantz cd5001 OSE, which should have arrived in that week...
but since Belgium is such a small country (no really it is...) they were out of stock at the distributor, so it will take at least 2 weeks before I get it here...

waiting is no problem though...

One guy came from Canned Heat to be in Spirit and Randy California died in the 90's saving his son from drowning. Spirit broke up before Dr. was out and the producer put together the finished pieces.

Well...quiet at work now, but spent the morning listening to the first Bad Brains album. I was so happy when they re-released it a few years ago, considering my old casseette had snapped somewhere long ago. The last section of that album from Pay to Cum and another hardcore track than suddenly busting into I Love I Jah, a sparse, ragged reggae tune...amazing.

Played SoundTrack of Sopranos on SACD last night. I enjoyed more than half of tracks on the 2 disc album. Recording quality was very inconsistant.

The worst track on there was "Affection" by The Lost Boys, but it was followed by great tunes so it was worth spending $10.

I brought alot of work home this weekend, but I think I'll enjoy my rest instead.

Made a little foray into the stores yesterday and came up with an odd collection of titles even for me. This dreary Wednesday has been perfect for tunage and so, thus far, the spinning has included:

Califone~[Roots and Crowns] sometimes plodding and caustic, always atmospheric, a worthy title.

Charles Earland~Black Talk! organic 70's jazz that shows ya from where Paul Shaffer copped all his licks-Jay Murda, you'd love this one.

Nitzer Ebb~Body of Work masters of post krautrock, pre-industrial industrial, a collection of the best of body rock.

G. Love's Lemonade with a host of guests including, of course, the Special Sauce this may have been the pop album of 2006. Why am I just finding it now?

...right this minute but...this past weekend had the opportunity to listen to The Guitar Artistry Of Charlie Byrd on my main rig...Originally recorded forty-seven years ago, this remaster really shows what three talented musicians can do with some old pop standards. It was and is stereo BTW.

Takin' A Chance On Love, Moonlight In Vermont, the Gershwin's Nice Work If you Can Get It and a little Django Nuages thrown in for good measure. Singer Eddie Cantor's most popular song Makin' Whoopee (which some of us may remember as the melody for a Pepsi campaign some years ago) gets an interesting treatment ...some tracks venture into the samba/bossa nova rhthyms Byrd would later help to popularize...A traditional arrangement of House Of The Rising Sun shows there is very little new under it...the sun, that is and Ring Those Harmonics is another gem and there are others.

Simplicity itself...drummer Buddy Deppenschmidt, acoustic bassist Keter Betts and Byrd on a nylon-stringed guitar...

...you might appreciate it...Stumbled on it, much like that Bill Evans Trio disc...Those listening stations that some retailers have are really a godsend...Waybackwhen, dopping a few bucks on a $4-5 vinyl dud was no biggie...two to three times that price is another story...and yes I'm a cheap SOB...no, wait a minute...make that frugal...

There also seems to be a 45RPM, heavyweight vinyl pressing out there...in the neighborhood of $50US...not in my neighborhood...

Also found an inexpensive 2-disc set of Grapelli and Rheinhardt as part of Le Hot Club and another bargain bin single disc of some performances of Django including a second program with those of Charlie Christian...Unfortunately, while not too bad (some analog transcription noise and two tracks with half-@$$ed stereo reprocessing) they were unheard (different retailer) and aren't something I would recommend other than for their historic note, so while it's not a total loss in my book, I'd better stick with the sampling stations.

OK this end...BOT is threatening an appearance after the past few days of sleet and hail and snow and melting slush...spring will shortly be sprung much to my dismay...Unfortunately, the promise of more temperate weather seems to be causing an early bloom of idiots...

Dude, that album is pretty good. DOnt care too much for the track with Mos Def and another with the vocalist from Galactic(I think). Though it doesnt have the same sound, Charlie Hunter and Leon Parker called the Duo is excellent. One of my favorite for sure. Got another one called the Garage Trio. Dont have strong impression on that album. I should listen to it pretty soon.

On the same note, I've been listening to alot of MMW again lately.
The track "Your Lady" on the album TONIC always puts me in a perfect mood.

Lou Reed: Coney Island Baby

Lou shows that he can keep that druggy, raggedy vibe and still make it fairly accessible on this one. Great laid back tunes from start to finish. Kicks, with its cut and paste party noise sound collage background is one of my all time favorite Lou Reed songs.

The Good, The Bad, & The Queen

This one just keeps growing on me. I still think there's a good bit of Gorillaz sound to it, but much mellower. The piano throughout distinguishes it, and it's heavy on the dubby bass sounds. I've listened to this one more than anything else I've picked up this year, although I've been slow to grab stuff so far.

I've heard the guy put down for being just a studio trickster. Well, it's dub. Dub is all about the studio tricks. Besides, Lee Perry was OK enough with him to collaborate, so I think he gets the proper respect where it counts. And, no he doesn't sound like Jamaica in 1975, he made this one in England in the 80s and yeah he uses synths and electronic instruments. But, unless you're a staunch traditionalist, this is an excellent example of some dub from the 80s. Smoke up.

Hey I have that one.. great stuff mang, Dub Me Crazy Pt. 2 is great too.. hey I love the last track on Part 1 (the one with the horns, I can't tell from the tracklist if it even has a title), been trying to find out for years what the source song is, sounds very familiar, kind of like something by Gregory Isaacs but not quite. Anyway, I love the Funkadelic influences..

I think this is a wrongly maligned album; his first solo outing. It gets a bad rap because most of the songs appear elsewhere, but I like the versions here in most cases. The arrangements are more straight ahead garagey rock with some fun back-up vocals tossed into the mix. Probably one of the most conventional albums he ever did in many ways. Even the wife, who generally can't stand Lou Reed was digging I Can't Stand It, the opening track. Oh, and I really like the cover.

Modest Mouse: We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank

Most of you probably know more about Modest Mouse then I do as I've usually kinda glossed over 'em and found the bits and pieces I have heard a bit boring. But, Johnny Marr joining up for this one got my attention, and I really liked it so far. Seems to be more diversity of sounds than the other stuff I've heard outta them. Not sure if I like this one better than the rest of their output or if I just need to give their other stuff a chance, but I'll keep listening to this one.

A bit of unusaul and local fare this evening with Starker Plays Baker:for cello &17 percussion instruments. Of course "Starker" refers to the much famed cellist Janos Starker, and the first half of this ecclectic work includes his tribute to jazz greats including Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis,John Coltrane, and Duke Ellington. On a more traditional note, the second half ends with the more traditional Sonata for Cello and Piano.

Recorded not too far from my home in the Opera House at Indiana University at Bloomington this disc is strange and beautiful at the same time. I suspect Dusty would fall in love with this one...

I've seen this filed as jazz, but it's got a strange, dissonant sound and is very minimalistic, almost ambient at times. I guess I'd call him a Norweigen Ambient Jazz Trupmter. The record mixes his trumpet with some mild electronic backing and creates a bit of a tense darkness. I'm not at all familiar with the guy and came across it on a whim, but it's interesting enough that I'll keep listening.

I'd be curious what anyone who knows more about this would have to say about it.

I got hooked on Jimmy on an album with Wes, so I grabbed a copy of The Cat on Verve and was dissapointed. But this one will be a different story.

The Complete Stax-Volt Soul Singles, Vol. 2: 1968-1971

After living with the first Stax collection for years, I finally am getting around to part 2. I've seen this collection maligned in the comparison, but I think it's just a personal thing which one you'd enjoy more and depends a lot on what era you're looking for. Quality wise, this thing is stellar as well. It's just you're moving ahead into a different era, and if you wann dig deep into some late 60s funky soul, this is amazing. For me, the first one had more recognizeable tracks, but I'm really digging the vibe on this one. Great driving around town music.

21st Century Dub

A Japaneese percussionist that goes by Pecker works with a slew of the best reggae musicians in Jamaica and records in some of reggae's biggest studios to come up with a disc that simmers and burns. Pecker works with greats like Sly&Robbie, The Wailers band and more while recording in Studio One and at Tuff Gong. Top notch dub, mezmorizing stuff. I think it's out of print and maybe not the easiest thing to come by nowadays, but if you see a copy, I highly suggest grabbing it if you're into dub and reggae.

Although this band has been around for awhile I have just discovered them...Vaya Con Dios. Especially the Time Flies album. Despite there name they are from Belgium and are a fine fusion of Jazz/Blues/R&B and ballads. After listening to them I just had to dig up my Lee Ritenour collection for a long over due listen.

Hey Basite, love to hear your comments on this band. The lead singer has a wonderful voice and IMHO reaches her apex on the Muddy Waters track.

The Clash: Singles Box Set

I was very on the fence abot this one when it first came out. I mean, I love the Clash, but does anyone really need 19 CD singles from one band, especially if I already own all the albums? Well, I don't, especially at the cost of this set. However, what about a shot at burning all 19 discs onto 4 CDs? OK, I'm all over that. The music is fantastic; the remastering is excellent. You get a great view of the band's growth, you get all the hits, you get a ton of fun, interesting b-sides. If only the record company would release a version complied on 4 discs. But, if you're really into collecting stuff, the 19 disc packaging is pretty damn cool. Personally though, I like having 'em collected on a few CDs. If I really wanna go collecting, I'll grab the original 45s.

NP: Oliver Nelson~"Screamin' The Blues"

As the precursor to "Straight Ahead" this one is, I believe, the first recorded pairing of Oliver Nelson and Eric Dolphy. Throw in a little Roy Haynes on the drums and you got one of the first examples of the funky, modern jazz sound of the 60's.

That's another great album by Olvier. The one I have probably isnt the cleaniest copy in the world, but none of that matters when I drop the needle...

I just got back from the high end shop, they were doing a yearly 'showoff' I 'auditioned' the 2 systems they had set up:

a pair of avalon Isis speakers, combined with spectral gear, and 25k MIT speaker cables.
and system 2 (where I also listened to a track of the Massive Attack cd)

a pair of Wilson Audio Maxx speakers, driven by a pair of Mcintosh MC501 monoblocks, the Mcintosh C2200 preamp and a very big wadia cd player and very very very expensive cables :)

this day ruled:)
and I came to the conclusion that I need a better amp.

Went to a charity shop on saturday to see if I could find another little present for my wifes birthday (today). It was pretty busy and there in the corner was a taped up box in the shape of a record. Written on it was Vinyl. That's it.
I asked "How much"?
Wait for it. £ 1. Yeah.
On opening up I had 22 Lps all still wrapped and brand spanking new. Mainly classical. But by pure coincidence, after my recent discovery of Charlie Byrd, a recording by him. Blues Sonata.

Anyway here is what I have listened to so far:

"Charlie Byrd - Blues Sonata" What a fun record and a wonderful recording.

"J.S.Bach - Brandenburgische Konzerte 1-6 by the English Chamber Orchestra/Benjamin Britten. Like this very much.

"Mozart - Symphonien Nos. 35-41 - Berliner Philarmoniker/Karl Boehm. And this.

Ironic really, just as Feanor did post his classical list and my appetite got wetted I came across this.
I just went back to the shop and gave them another £10.00, would have felt really guilty otherwise.

Far too much music and too little time. Having a new record store on the way home from work is way too convenient for using the avoidance of road-rage feuled rush hour incidents as justification for shopping. Combine that with a lovely package of parting gifts from across the Atlantic (thank you dogcatcher B) and it's been quite a day.

Moving round and round has been some great stuff by Sarah Vaughn and the Alex Cuba Band, as well as repeat listens to NIN and the new Benny Benassi. As evening falls, I'm mellowing out to an old favorite--Yo Yo Ma's Soul of the Tango. Lush.

Random thought (and I'm already putting on my flame suit) but am I the only one who thinks Willie Nile's Beautiful Wreck Of The World is a significantly better album than Streets of New York??

Since this is an original pressin' it sounds a bit noisier than I normally would prefer. I probably should've listened to the entire thing before I bought it, but after 10 seconds of listening I had to bring this baby home. Noisy or not, this album was incredible.. I imagine a CD version would sound quite thin. This is exactly what vinyl is all about.
I will be picking up another title for sure.

NP: Basie in London. Got this mint Japanesephile pressing at a local shop for not very much. Kinda sad I'm going to bed right after this.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Damn The Torpedoes

Tom Petty my never be cutting edge, cool, hip or whatever, but he's made some damn fine records. And, he did have a little edge in his early days that helped him stick out of the crowd. This one reminds me of something mentioned on the CCR thread, short sweet, get in and get out, leave 'em wanting more. Refugee, Here Comes My Girl and Don't Do Me Like That make up a third of this thing, and while American Girl may still be my favorite Tom Petty song, this is my favorite of his albums.

Marching band intro to "Come Home", new songs back to back, Tim writhing on his back during "Johnny Yen", ending the night with a sweat-soaked "How Was It For You". The new songs are a welcome return to form even 'Upside Downside' with the 'lyrics just written last night.

Superb versions of "Laid" and "Waltzing Along" which took the roof off, fantastic!

They looked like as if they were as pleased as us to be back. Outstanding gig.:)
I moved like a young one, but will suffer later I am sure.:ciappa:

Most of the time i just despise Sony's early line of SACD circa 200-2001 (Mahler 1 anyone? Yech) but this bad boy has a special place in my heart. Wonderful imaging with a spectacular shrillness form to brass greats, Miles Davis' Round About Midnight just fits for this night and time.

I decided to get Latino for a change...so I popped in Olga Tañón's Te Acordarás De Mi from 1998, which is probably one of her average albums. It has some really great tracks like the opener Tu Amor and Heilo Y Fuego, which are some sizzling tracks...the rest of the album is a mixture of mostly ballads that I can take or leave. Every once in awhile I get into these Latino moods because of the incredible rythyms and brass. My wife is Puerto Rican so we have a fairly decent collection of Latino music, another CD I ended up playing a bit today was Maná's Eclipse, which is a really terrific album beginning to end.

As a follow-up to the "Recent Purchases" thread I would have to say that my two favorite discs out of this week's acquisitions are the two with the least "Hi-Fi" recording techniques.

I really enjoyed a couple of spins of the Amy Winehouse affair--great R&B sensibilities but her engineer really needs to stop trying to match her drink for drink.

Spinning now and probably a perennial favorite of the future is Coleman Hawkins' The Hawk Relaxes. Man, what a fun spin. For those of you offput by the oft treble harsh characteristics of RVG Remasters--fear not. Silky smooth (I daren't say "analog" but I thought it) with the dynamic intesity of Saxophone Colossus and the modular moodiness of Kind of Blue. Yeah there's tape hiss but so what?...this is music.

So I show up for work today and on my chair was a new copy of JJ Cale and Eric Claptons latest collaboration--The Road To Escondido. One of the ladies and I where talking about this last week and I guess she was out shopping, spotted it and picked it up for me.

Any time these two masters get together it's magic. This includes remake of Cale's-Don't Cry Sister Cry..WOW. Back up musicians include Billy Preston, Taj Mahal, Albert Lee, John Mayer and David Teegarden.

So if you like folksy blues check it out.

Great music can sound 100X better than a great recording of a shiytt music in a reference system.

Did I need another recording of "The Four Seasons"? I did not think so until I heard this in Barnes and Noble. Walked in heard this overhead and went straight back to inquire about the recording. Usually I recognize music but this really caught my ear. I was even willing to pay B & N prices for the cd. Excellent recording of the orchestra and the harp playing is very enjoyable and not gimmicky. If someone had suggested this before I heard it I think I would have dismissed it. This has been one of my best musical finds in a long time. Lately any good discoveries have been gifts from friends.

....I'm a big believer in Break-in-Period on LPs(couple of spin would do). Dont know why, I just believe it. Life is more simple that way, sometimes.

But, this sealed original is rocking my world straight out of da bag.

What a fantastic eve for the tunes. Started off with another spin of Flash Hawk Parlor Ensemble which reconfirmed my opinion of the sonic quality of this disc as well as the high degree of musicianship.

Demetrio's post had me searching the library and landing on Putamayo World Party which throws down with some great reggae and zydeco. If ya get the chance check out Sarazino from Algeria or Osibisa from Ghana.

Rumskib's self-titled album is an insight into the Scandinavian duo's ethereal influences. If you like pre-Las Vegas Cocteaus you may want to check out this new 2007 release. Very shimmery.

Winded it down now with big daddy Booker Ervin's The Freedom Book which while a bit raucous is a solid chunk of what was going on besides Coltrane.

Nice one, record of the year right now for me, continuing the dark, brooding depths of Alligator without feeling the need for occasional tempo change distractions. Great flow, and a real sense of accomplishment. Listening to that charming debut from Nina Nastasia, Dogs, a lot myself lately. "Judy's in the Sandbox" often winds up on repeat, but so does the whole thing ......

The album would also mark the beginning of a lasting peer-relationship with noted recording engineer Steve Albini, who said of the record in an interview for Mojo magazine: "There are cruel ironies in making albums for a living. In the process of making a record, you hear it so many times that the charms of even the best of them can wear off through over-exposure. On rare occasions, records I've worked on have withstood this scrutiny and ended up being personal favourites. Of these, a good handful are beautiful and sublime, and I listen to them for pleasure. Nina Nastasia's 'Dogs' is a record so simultaneously unassuming and grandiose that I can't really describe it, except in terms that would make it (and me) sound silly. Of the couple thousand records I've been involved with, this is one of my favourites, and one that I'm proud to be associated with."

I always liked Rancid OK. They were those cute little retro punks who loved the Clash. Well, I guess a reggae album coming outta the fold was inevitable. And, being that I was always a sucker for the Clash's reggae excursions, it's no surprise that I fully enjoy this record. Nice, dusty ska/reggae vibe throughout. An excellent record to play through the summertime.

Enjoyed quite a bit of tune today. On weekends, I like to play at least 12 hours of music to catch up. For that, I think I need to go with SS amp. My power tubes arent happy on weekends.

Yeah I know. I've never cared for Bjork much, but that was more than 10 years ago. I was at a CD store and it was buy three get one free. I was looking for a free album, and circled around the store at least 3 times... then I saw Bjork and remembered your posts. It's quite good, except for that one track.....

I enjoyed this album on the way back from Cincy to Lexie. But of course I was getting contact buzz by a friend. It was a great drive...
I never cared for Beastie Boys or Beck, but sounds great on this 2CD set. Frankie sounds great with a kick of Bosa Nova. Great stuff overall. I will be picking up the 2nd version of Deck Safari in a near future. Oh, and it's sounding great playing rightt now with clear conscious.

It seems silly to jump in after all this time but I've recently picked up a few CD's. I wondered into a used CD store with nothing in mind. The store has listening stations set up. After doing some listening here's what happened.

I was interested in adding some Rickie Lee Jones to my collection, the store had 3 titles, I didn't care for 2 of them but did buy Traffic from Paradise. This is a good album with excellent sound quality.

They had several POD titles, including some still using Payable On Death. I have Satelite and was curious to see what their other stuff sounded like. The first CD I listened to I bought called Snuff The Punk. One other was maybe their first attempt at the rap thing and didn't have much to offer. But Snuff The Punk is a very good album and a total full throddle assault. All the guys shine on this album but the drummer and bass player are off the chart here. Or, should I have said off the chain?

I didn't have any Helmet and saw their Best of and picked that up. It was sealed, If I had listened I'm not sure I would have still walked out with it. They aren't very versatile.

I remember FA talking about Blue October when they first came out, I saw that album and gave it a spin. It may not be one of my favorites but there were enough good songs to prompt me to buy it. I thought my wife might like them too. I'm the only one that does.

Just got back from a great holiday that influenced my musical listenig:

Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" -- man o man what a trip; it's been a while since an album from back to front grabbed me like this does; absolutely love it!! my summer album of 2007!! Even if it came out in 2006 -- I love being late to a party/////////.

Josh Ritter's "The Historical Conquests Of Josh Ritter" -- I cannot go wrong with this guy's creative musings -- I know that it's not out yet; but, once again, the dj at our place in the sun, had this covered; was able to get an advance copy -- run and don't stop for this one -- it's that good imho..

David Dondero's "Simple Life" - Laid back summer stay-cool music in the best possible meaning of the phrase. Love it!!

Calexico's "Tool Box" -- although many of us may be getting weary of the country-rock-alt style, these guys never let me down -- always fresh and always inspiring -- spin it eay!!

Hawkwind, good stuff. The only problem I have never heard a good recording. I had a vinyl and sold it to a big Hawkwind fan because I never listened to it due to the sound quality. I bought a CD once and took it back for an exchange because it was one of the worst quality recordings I've heard. If there are any remasters or titles you know of that are tolerable, let me know.

Hi Bernd, Good to see another 'Go Find' fan I'm liking this album too but not quite as much as the last one. But that Jesse Sykes is a definite winner, saw her in York about 2 months ago and she was brilliant.

My recent listens are that remastered Prefab Sprout - Steve Mcqueen, which came the other day (it's just as good as I hoped it would be) and the Spoon latest.

Patti Smith Horses up first. I'm pretty sure that what makes a good band is synergy, of course it helps if they can make music, and in this case there is a good producer on board, John Cale. At least I like his mix. You can detect the guitar overdubs but they sound like they're occupying a position in the stage of another musician. A whole hellava lot, I like his mix.

Next was Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers at Keystone Korner 3 with the Marsalis Bros. Clean cookin with gas!

Having listened to that I just had to put on Free For All and listened to the title track for the 400th time. Blakey is all up Wayne Shorter's backside and Shorter just smokes, cooks, burns for chorus after chorus. This is pure heat!

Next up in the stack was the Janet Jackson's remix LP of Rhythm Nation. Jump street!. You gotta respect that Jimmy Jam groove. After that I retired to watch the rest of the ladies tennis in Toronto where I couldn't take my eyes off of Tatiana Golovin.

I've been listening to Iron Maiden, Fear of the Dark. It took a couple of spins but I like several songs on the album quite a bit. I accidently ended up with a copy of HIM, the one with Wings of a Butterfly. I wasn't overly thrilled with it but it's starting to grow on me when I'm in the mood. I also listened to a Virgin Black album I have, can't remember the name.

I certainly needed this rest today..

I enjoyed quite a bit of music today. Even went to a Home depot to look for some 2" nuts to be used as base for isolation tweak I had in mind.
The biggest one could find was 7/8" and didnt wanna go with some boucy ball, instead of racketballs. Oh well.

I just finished spinning Triumvirat - Old Loves Die Hard. This was (is?) a German band from the 70's that can do the ELP sound better than ELP on some tracks but with a more classical influence.

I've never even heard of them. I'll try my best to remember that name, the next time I go digging. Any particular album you suggest by them? It doesnt look like they have a huge catalogue so I guess I'll try to pick one in mid 70's.

This is the only one I have and had another album back then but don't remember the title. I'm going to rip it from vinyl as soon as I get rid of a nasty ground hum when I hook up my sound card with a grounded cable. I can send you a shiny disk if you listen to such thing?

Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow

This album make an appearance at just about every sit down session for the last couple of months. IMO Jeff Beck is one of the most technically competent guitarist there is.

My favorite Jeff Beck album is Wired. I've become a big Jan Hammer fan. He plays with Beck on Wired, with Al Dimeola on Elegant Gypsy and a Billy Cobham album that also feature the late great Tommy Bolin.

I've taken a tangent since my last spinning post. I just got in The Wreckers, Taylor Swift and an old Charlie Daniels album called Million Mile Reflections that is darn good. I've only listen to The Wreckers once, there are some good songs but after awhile the negativity ways on you. It could have just been the mood I was in. Taylor Swift I know is young but the entire album is in the same vein of boy/girl, this or that.

I also picked up a Casting Crowns album called Lifesongs. It is a dual disc with CD on one side and a DVD with hi rez audio on the other. I like this band, the style is kind of Power Pop and they have Christian lyrics but the songs for the most part are very well crafted and the vocalist has a powerful delivery, the whole package works.

Billy Cobham, Spectrum, I know it was on CD but I'm not sure if it's still in print. Mine is on vinyl. Al Dimeola's, Elegant Gypsy is a must as well if you like Fusion style Jazz. It has great guitar, percussion and whatever that thing is Hammer plays. There is one track with Dimeola and a Flamingo guitarist that is just those two on acoustic guitar, one in each speaker, it is incredible.

Another rec sort of in the same area, Abraxas Pool. This is a Greg Rollie and Neal Schon project that came a few years back. A Latin flavored Rock album some where between Journey, before Steve Perry, and Santana.

If you feel like paying more than $30 for any LP is ridiculous then I think you know the answer. To me it's worth it, but I think older pressing is more dynamic than this $30 repress. Maybe it's all in my head, cuz this LP sounds smooooooth and cleeeeeeeean. Almos too stable, really.

Residing some 45 minutes to the south of yours truly, Willi Scheff reminds me of Beck if he showered less and had less style but these guys be strummin' some angst filled indie. I like the samples, I like the lyrics, I like the lack of compressed guitars. One of th ebetter examples of the genre in 07.

Robert Plant - Shakin and Stirred. Although I'm not a huge fan of his solo work this is one for the quality recording in itself.

Mark Knopfler-Golden Heart. I'm surprised that his name is not brought up much. He certainly has a distinct guitar style.

Check out his "Wag the Dog" album, especially the title track. A little more bluesy and uptempo than Golden Heart.

It Feels Good To Me by Bill Bruford with Annette Peacock. Compositionally, maybe the best I know of.

Hip Elegy by Joachim Kuln with outstanding performances by trumpeter Terumasa Hino and drummer Alphonse Mouzon.

I've always wondered about Tusk, if it was a good album. For a double album it didn't generate much radio play but that's definitely not a sign of anything. I don't generally buy albums unless I have some idea of what they sound like, so I just never picked that up. I had a chance to buy it on vinyl and probably should have, it may have been worth the money to cure my curiosity

esp. the second album imo. It has all the stuff you may like in the 'Mac' but basically a Lindsay Buckingham album as far as songwriting goes...and he can write. Plus it sounds really good and you can likely pick it up for a small handfull of bills.

N.P. Vic Chestnutt 'North Star Deserter' (released by Constellation on 180gm. vinyl...pretty nice sound for Vic)

Did you get it on wax? Not the greatest recording or music in the world, but I LOVE that album, but I'm a sucker for GG. With that in mind, I can't wait for the reissue of Idle Moment. I should get 2 copies.

I played Horance Silver's Songs for my Father, again. Maybe because I've had much time for music lately, but Joe Henderson made my head spin a couple of times, and made me scream out with joy!!

I also enjoyed: Roy Ayers - Red, Black, and Green. I was really suprised that I enjoyed this album as much as I did. This isnt HardBop, but I just couldnt ignore the great music.

I spun the new Ann Wilson covers album. It's a pretty good album, she tends to do more of a layed back approach to the songs, many of them feature violin. There is a quality to the sound though I can't put my finger on. On some of the songs it sounds to me like her voice is louder in the mix than it should be and the overall feel doesn't fool me into believing everyone is there performing at the same time, maybe it's poor mixing. It's a shame because the instruments sound good and the background is very quiet. I hope some one else hears the album to see what they think.

Also, Count Basie live at the Sands in Vegas, 1966. This disc is in stereo and sounds good, unbelievably so for a live recording from 66. I'd recommend this album for anyone into Basie or wanting to hear a good album by him. I bought the Ken Burns comp of Basie and was disappointed. It may be alright for a historical picture but all of it is in mono and I couldn't get into it.

I have the Sinatra at the Sands cd that he recorded with the Basie orchestra in 1966, in fact i believe your album was recorded as the band was warming up the audience before Frank came on. It is very well recorded as well and is just a great album,seek it out.

Gotta pimp some local guys. They been doing the rockabilly, roots, blues, punk thing for a while. If ya like Reverend Horton Heat and that kinda stuff, you'd probably like these guys. They just put out their fourth CD. Not sure it really captures all of what you get when you pack yourself into the little corner bars you can catch these fellas playin' regularly, but it gets a lot of the point across.

Yeah, it's a fun album. I love it. That album isnt too hard to find on wax, as long as you keep your eyes open. I think I paid like $20 M-.

Back in the saddle! After two weeks on complete, nightmarish hell at work say hello to the bad guy. After 180+ hours of work with little to show for it I'm ready for some time off--and nothing like a little Jonny C and Ken Burrell SACD to start of an afternoon the right way.

All due respect to the Rudy Van Gelder series but this one smokes 'em...that smooth analog goodness really highlights some of the harshness of the remixes.

Vinyl: Supertramp - with Sister Moonshine
Pure Prairie League - with Amy. Interesting mix on this album, the acoustic guitars have a bright or metallic sound to them and on some songs it sounds like some one is playing an electric guitar with no amp, they just got the mic close enough to pick up the strump. Good album though.

My neighbor was unloading some CD's, $2.00 a disc. I bought a 5 disc Elvis box set for $10.00. I got about 20 other titles but haven't had the chance to go through them all. I did listen to a group called the Bluegrass Cardinals. I really like the album, I think it was a Best of or some collection of their stuff. Very tight harmony and vocal interaction and some of the songs must have been recorded with the band live in the studio, excellent sound quality. That ole fiddle sounded like it was right in my room.

I also spun my new Within Temptations a couple times now and Darkwell, I forgot the title.

One of those records that defies believe. That guy is only 23 years old, but he writes with the maturity of an old soul. If melodic tunes and a voice forged from honey and whiskey is your thing - give it a go.

Last night Doobie Bros. then Vince Gill. It was interesting that this Vince Gill sounded really good, not reference, but good. I think what I liked so much is how open and spread out the sound stage was. A lot of commercial modern recordings must use some type of compression.

Tonight, Infectious Grooves to get me down the road on the treadmill. Oh, and Collier's samples as I type.

My wife picked me up from work and Styx, Grand Illusion was in the CD player. I don't care if I ever hear Come Sail Away again but I had forgotten what a great album that is.

Had time to spin a couple vinyls from the last show I went to. Bob Seger, Like A Rock which has a few good songs but definitely not on par with his 70's stuff. And... before shutting down for the night Buck Owens. You know sometimes you have to take a hit of the real stuff. I'm always amazed by the stuff that gets played on C&W stations posing as C&W, the young stars always pay omage to the pioneers yet many young people don't know what real C&W sounds like because it doesn't get played anymore.

Cool, I'll give that one the look-up. Speaking of old school horn blowin', Lee Morgan's Sidewinder is slithering through the speakers as I type. It must be said that this recording falls into the treble-hot Rudy Van Gelder archtype but the interplay between Lee and the oft-undervalued Joe Henderson is outstanding.

Whattup Jay,

Alterbridge is the rhythm section of Creed with some other schmoe as a vocalist. They're completely forgettable although Mark Tremonti is a decent guitarist for that genre. I would bet a fair amount of dosh that you'll hate them.

...And yeah, it's good to have Brother Bernd around again.

Here's a first: a non-music "What's Spinning?" post. What's goin' down you ask? The crystalline sound of San Jose meeting the Wings at the Joe...aaaahhh, you can almost smell Belle Isle.
