Listening to it for the first time right now and diggig it a lot. Grabbed it after hearing this <a href="http://www.matadorrecords.com/mpeg/brightblack/brightblack_everybody_new.mp3">MP3 of Everybody New</a> at the Matador site.

Picked up that Corinne Bailey Rae that had been talked about elsewhere. The cd is almost like separate albums, the first half falling within the styles of Sade and Erykah Badu with some sexy Vula Malinga vocals thrown in the mix. The second half seems to run out of steam, relying heavily on slightly over-emphasized bass bumpin' and lacking the creative spark the preceding tunes. I suspect the album will do well on the strength of the singles, and it's a very good but not earth-shattering rec.

I picked that up a couple of days ago also. I've only listened to the first half so far and it just wasn't as good as I had hoped. She has a beautiful voice. But musically, the songs are just weak. The two songs that I heard on SNL were by far the best tracks on the first half. I'll have to spin the rest of it this weekend, but given your comments along with what I've heard so far, I don't have high hopes. It'll make for good background music when the in-laws come over though.

I went CD shopping yesterday and picked up two new (to me) Beatles CDs...Revolver and Abby Road. I also picked up the new Scissor Sisters. I'm kicking off this morning with Revolver. I can't believe that I got away with ignoring The Beatles for so long.

Well I think you diagnosed the malady, FA. Beautiful voice but the actual song construction is kind of poor, or at least hackneyed. Unfortunately, she is listed as a primary songwriter though one hopes she is more of a lyricist and the future will bring better musicians into the fold. Still, I've heard often worse.

Is that the chick that was on Saturday Night Live? I was flipping channels and stopped on her and was really wanting to like her, but it just didn't quite get there for me. I was really happy to hear an R&B singer that didn't just resort to vocal gymnastics for once these days, but the songs were just kinda bland. It did make me curious what else she had going for her since she did have a nice voice and seemed capable of doing something quite good.

Do yourself a favour and wait for the reviews of her 2nd CD. Once people discover who she is, maybe she'll get offers to record some better songs, by more talented writers.

Now spinning is the new Scissor Sisters disk, Ta-Dah. Every proggy bone in my body tells me that I should hate this stuff, but for some unexplainable reason, I like it...a lot. Go figger.

Rarely do I have time to spin an album in the morning, but this morning I got up a little early, put on some coffee and walked the dog out to get the paper. The wind was blowing. It was warm and humid and dark, ominous clouds were crossing the sky. A few big rain drops were being blown almost horizontally. It looked and felt like hurricane weather. I went back inside and warmed up the gear, sat down at the computer to check the weather and saw pics of a huge front moving W to E. I put on In the Reins, the Iron & Wine/Calexico EP, and continued checking the weather but by the second track I moved to my listening chair. I sat back and listened to the whole thing while staring out the window.

Only gripe is that this 2LP set is one of those with side A&D on disc 1, and Side B&C on disc2. I dont get it....

as you know, in my advents, there also are 12" woofers, and trust me, for most music, you won't need your sub, maybe very soft, and only for the lowest frequencies, but really, for most music, you won't need them, it will be different though, bass will sound so much more powerfull, only i don't like the horn tweeter, but that's a personal choice, happy listening...

I'll be sure to borrow some good digicam and post some pics. I've finally madeup my mind and went with Triangle Comete ES. Apparetely Comete Anniversary edition was recently reviewed. Probably should've read it first, but they can't really offer what I wanna know. I could've spent $600 more and got the limited edition one. But they use the same drivers so I opted for Cognac finish. More money for music.

Speaking of music, City Lights by Lee Morgan sounds great. I've never heard it unfortunately. That's what's great about digital software. Maybe I'll get a reasonably priced CD/SACD player.

Right now, spinning some Mono '81 reissue in mint condition that was pressed in US just for Japanese Market. Then ended up at a used wax store in Colorado for my Japanese hands. This one isnt going anywhere no mo.

I highly recommend it for anyone who can tolerate experimental Jazz. I think Musicoverall will enjoy this one.
I dont know what it is about Jazz, but I just can't get enough of it. For me, this is the greatest thing to come out of America, except for Mingus. Oh well.

You do need to pick up alot of jazz. There are a ton of great jazz and classical realeases that are top-notch and worth the investment. Probably 70% of my posts are SACD. I'll try to be specific about quality product. Have fun with your new toy...

My favorite of his Ambient series, alnog with the one he did in collaboration with Harold Baud. I even have the third speakers set up in the rear like he suggests in the albums liner notes...interesting effect and very nice as long as you are inbetween the speakers...when I wander around the house and get outside the triangle, it can be odd sounding indeed for a lot of music...although for this album, it doesn't matter.

Dexy's Midnight Runners were horribly maligned as one-hit wonders, but this whole album is an excellent fusion of celtic folk music and distinctive British style soul music. Great Hammond organ and horns throughout. You could take the big hit off this album and there'd still be plenty of resason to listen. Searching for the Young Soul Rebels is a great album by them as well.

easing into Saturday morning with Brightblack Morning Light - S/T. I think it was nobody who mentioned this one. The vinyl version is a nice double album package that supposed to contain an extra track. It also comes with a pair of 3D glasses that I assume you're supposed to use to look at the album cover and artwork, but I can't get them to work. Anyhow, I just got it and I'm listening to sides a and b for the second time. These guys lay down some laid back grooves with electric piano, simple guitar with a little wah, bass, drums, some extra "out there" sounds and horns thrown in for good measure.

Nice find NB. I've also been impressed with the quality of Matador's vinyl of late.

If you like My Bloody Valentine, Serena-Maneesh is probably gonna rank high with you. Fuzzy, distorted, swirls of guitars with some proposulsive rythms beneath. Gets a bit heavier at times, but always stays floating and has plenty of moments of light.

Glad someone else is diggin' that Brightblack Morning Light. I was in a hurry and where I grabbed it, they only had the CD...maybe shouldda waited for the vinyl.

The morning starts with a disc that not only isn't highly recommended, it isn't recommended at all. Paavo Jarvi/Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie~Stravinsky is yet another disappointment. Jarvi is starting to remind of Mike Keenan in that he rarely brings out the best in anyone around him. Disappointing in both performance and sound quality--caveat emptor

Yeah, every medium has it's shortcomings. I have also been able to overcome those on SACD and appreciate it very much. With a few hundred titles in the collection one is bound to find a dud or three. If you have any questions about specific titles fire away and I'll give input if I can.Many others around here can give voice to experience as well.

As for this moment in time, there are few better ways to prepare for the madness of the workweek than with some hot java and John Coltrane's Blue Train...

A speakers corner re-release from a 1959 session. Not my usual, but have to broaden the musical horizons and such. Two top class saxophone players and the classic west coast rythmn section of Jimmy Rowles on Piano, Mel Lewis on drums and Leroy Vinegar on bass.

All on 180 gr. virgin Vinyl. The house is swinging.

I went to Border and acquired 3 shiny discs. They got some great stuff there without the Virgin price

DSOTM and Coral by David Sanchez on SACD.

I was expecting DSOTM on SACD to be spectacular. It was great. THe best area I could compare to my 30th Anniversary LP to this 30th Anniversay on SACD is track 3 and the first 2:30 minutes of track 4. With my TT setup, soundstage is much wider, but that famous bell on the beginning of the track "Time" was something I can't achieve on LP.
I think what I need to do with this format is to find new recordings. I dont see the point of acquiring old recordings since vinyl is great for that.

Coral by David Sanchez was really cool. I loved the style. He plays with other members with Prague Philharmonic Orchestra behind him. Kinda like what I've always wanted Herbie Mann to sound like. I guess background could;ve been quieter, but not too worried about it.

The Miles Davis Quintet, The Legendary Prestige Quinted Sessions... SAMPLER!!!!!!! For $0.02!!!!!!!!!! They had about 10 of them, and thought about grabbing them all for $0.20 and be done with my Christmas shopping.:ihih:
This has 4 tracks with Coltrane, Garland, Chamber, and Philly Joe Jones. Just dont expect the last track Walkin(previously unreleased) to be great. Almost as bad as the Disc 6 of the Miles and Coltranes Complete Columbia Recordings '59-'61.

Hey Bernd, it's nice to see you listening to some older Jazz. Ben Webster on LP has been on the top of my list, but keeps slipping away.

The Downward Spiral is a great multi-channel effort. Like DSOTM, it can get away with stupidcrazy mc stuff because of what it is. IMO with virtually no organic instruments and instrumentation it seems natural went Trent indulges his warped engineer side. There is a lot of surround info and, interestingly to me anyway, over half the guitar tracks are MIDI originated. Most of those chords are impossible to actually play. The man's a sadist.

Watching the Ramones documentary last night and hearing 'em play a bit of Television when they talked about CBGBs got me to pull this one out. This is one I didn't appreciate until the last few years. I'd only heard bits and pieces over teh years and kinda just ignored them, prefering harder sounds when I went down that path. Big mistake. Fantastic guitar record. I've got the 4Men vinyl reissue and it's really well done.

The Fragile is a great album, but TDS was more of my thing at the time I was into them in HSchool. So, I kinda have a bit of emotional attachmentz to'em. With Teeth? ahh.... I think Trent's music is aging well. That's all I'm gonna say.
If you have a SACD player, I strongly suggest you get TDS on SACD. Problem is that I dont feel like spinning anything else after that. It's hard to follow with anything after that. Maybe some old mono LP of Billy Holiday.

well i'm playing something rather unconvenient, i'm playing a OST from a game (hitman blood money), the soundtrack was made by Jesper Kyd (which was unknown before hitman) and i must say that i am impressed, really, in the game the music was good, but when played alone (without the game) it's quite a good job, it does what it is supposed to do, it makes you 'feel' the world of hitman, it's so threatening, and really ice cold.
i'd say he did a good job.

Last night I enjoyed Charlie Hunter/Leon Parker - Duo. I never cared too much for his style, but especially this one song "You Dont Know What Love Is" really sucked me in.

Now spinning vinyl after I brought back in old ugly TT desk. Made all the difference in the world, and I couldnt be happier.

Older recordings sound great on vinly, that's nothing new. But this one, I still can't believe the quality of this wax. It's definetly worth $30 I paid for. I'm really enjoying it. I honestly can't remember last time I enjoyed anything like this. I think my Denon cart helps alot cuz it's not breaking up her piano.

When we talk about Hi-Rez music generally we're talking about SACD or DVD-A, but today I picked up a title in the 24/96 DAD format. Blue Note/Classic Records re-release of Hank Mobley's 1961 effort Roll Call. What a great surprise!

Not all the Classic re-issues are spot on, but this is one of the many that is. Highly recommended...

Went to a music store and had a dedicated SACD section and it was HUGE!!!!!!!! But didnt wanna spend over $30 a copy so grabbed Supreme Jazz SACD for aobut $12 a piece. Silver, Monk, Rollings, Adderley, and Peterson. Can`t wait to get back to play on my system, but def`ly enjoying time with my fam.

I always say that I'm not much on Christmas music, but I seem to have accumulated quite a bit of it. Of course, Handel's Messiah and The Nutcracker Suite are classics, Diana Krall's album last year was pretty good and even Ashanti Moore's album of a few years ago wasn't bad.

From one of the ladies at the office I received Real Live Roadrunning a two disc set of live performances from the Mark Knoplfler and Emmylou Harris venture.

While neither the video or audio (2 channel/DTS) is exactly reference grade, both are more than servicable. The songs, of course, are solid and certainly brought to a new life by the inclusion of a cadre of Nashville hired guns. Song for Sonny Liston[/B benefits from some fantastic solo sections from country/bluegrass' brightest and [B]Belle Starr and If This Is Goodbye are showstoppers. If you liked the studio album you'll be properly enamored with this. Lotta fun.

I've never heard that song on Donald Byrd(1963) so I cant tell ya, but the album profile was recorded in 1959. So I imaging the style is fairly close. He was an aspiring Trumpter until he heard Wyton Kelly's performance, then he took on Piano again. I'm glad he did. I highly recommend it if you can find it.

I see you posted that on your previous post....duh. I have that on vinyl. Not that it's a bad copy, but I've been trying to get a cleaner copy and it has been a long journey. I did find one last month, but it had a huge scratch on the first track on side 2. I would've paid over $100 in an instant if it didnt have that scratch. Or well. That album is incredible. Iron City and The Latin Bit, not so much. I think I'll spin His Majestik King Funk later tonight.

The beginning of the end for TSOL. Personnel changes were in effect and the sound was different than before, but they still retained an energy and rough edge on this one that still draws me in...even if its not a "real" TSOL album. (I think there were like 2 original members on this one...before the slide into that strange world where there was still a band called TSOL that featured 0 original members and looked like a hair metal band.)

Currently Gary Moore gets another spin 'round these parts. The Back To The Blues DVD-A is one I've been flogging for awhile, but it just doesn't get old. While offering nothing grounbreaking, it has some great boogie-blues and some swanky brass on "You Upset Me Baby" which I believe is an old BB King standard. Good stuff.

Over here in the middle a district re-alignment has me seeing same duties in a new set of facilities, alot of new "challenges" and not nearly so much free time during the day (certainly not enough to play around with you characters :) )

Just got done with another listen to Swishy's rec: The Decemberists~The Crane Wife. This album manages to deftly maneuver between artsy-indie-singer -songwriter and artsy-indie-rock with some serious multi-instrumentalism. First listen was "quirky" while subsequent spins have proven interesting on a little deeper level. I like how they have managed to retain an identity through slight genre twists with stylistic nuance. Solid rec.

...at the moment, but I did stumble on Bill Evans' Portrait In Jazz while at Barnes & Noble ...Recorded in '59 after his work with Miles Davis on the Kind Of Blue sessions, it includes two takes of their earlier writing collaboration of Blue In Green...

It's a trio scenario and the interplay between Evans on piano and bassist Scott La Faro is really, really...what can I say?...cool...The stand-up bass sounds extraordinary to these ears...Drummer Paul Motian's brushwork is just what the doctor ordered, some nice tasty stuff, striking a nice balance with the two other players...

The majority of the program is of older (even using 1959 as a touchstone) classic ballads and such, Come Rain Or Come Shine...Autumn Leaves, that sort of thing from the likes of Cole Porter, Johhny Mercer, Rogers & Hart...Recognizing the titles, a familiarity with the melodies and curious as to how they might be reworked prompted the purchase. The little audio snippets at B&Ns listening stations were a positive indication...

Haven't had the opportunity to listen to it on my main rig, as I'm still doing some R&D modding of a pair of $6 Sony phones for a synergistic coupling with my port CDP...perhaps this weekend.

the stands are near to completion, the stands themselves are ready in fact, but we still need sand (or something else) and they still need their final layer of paint (which is going to be black I think) and then spikes, I'll look for them later on...

the stands (unfilled) wheigh about 7.8 - 8.0 kg each, I hope that I'll reach the 10 kg mark with the sand in them...

I really, really liked this one and Finally We Are No One, but Summer Make Good was disappointing to me. I liked it on first listen, but find I never go back to it the way I do the others. I even play some remixed stuff of theirs more than that one. Maybe they'll make up for it on the next one...although it seems like it's been a while.

Yeah, I'm listening to the new Norah for maybe the third or fourth spin since purchasing last Tuesday. It is good, not great, meaning that y'know it's NOrah. Nothing new and nothing grounbreaking but well done.
I don't think you'd be disappointed but you won't be dancing on the ceiling with Lionel Ritchie either.

As a suggestion, and within the same vein, if you don't already have The Peter Malick Group featuring Norah Jones~New York City I'd purchase that one first. A better-overall album IMO.

Did you ever get that Yellowjackets SACD?
