A real departure for me this week.

This past Saturday I went with some friends to see George Dalaras in concert, at Roy Thomson Hall.

Dalaras, in many ways, is to the Greek-speaking world what Sinatra is to the English-speaking world.
The show clocked in at over 3 hours & the legend known as George Dalaras showed up to play & sing.
Unfortunately, his voice is showing signs of age; but a good time was had by all.

So........this week's listening has been rather exclusively focused:

The new Secret Machines hits the stores on Tuesday here in the states. I'll buy it automatically.

As far as my own new listens are concerned...

The week was dominated by the latest Built to Spill disc, You In Reverse. It is an excellent album overall, with several tracks being immediately enjoyable and others loaded with grower potential. Like I said after my first listen, this may well be an early candidate for AOTY.

I also downloaded KT Tunstall's debut disc, Eye to the Telescope, for my daughter. It's the sonic equivalent of a cherry popsicle on a warm summer's day. Not terribly challenging, but consistently charming. Solid songwriting and singing.

Those were the only new ones for me. I'll provide my indescribably obvious analysis of the Secret Machines next week. :thumbsup:

Thursday is usually "new music day" for me but (boring) meetings have forced me to postpone the fun. Currently spinning on a late lunch:Memphis Slim's-Blue Memphis
About ten years ago, I saw Chris Spedding at an impromptu stop at TGO. This disc doesn't relly act as a showcase, but I was particularly impressed by his playing on that eve--especially in a genre that I don't generally regard as a favorite.

np:John Coltrane--Lush Life
This, along with Miles' 'Kind of Blue', could be considered the gateway drug for those who find jazz impenetrable. Heavily infused with blues tonal structure, Lush Life[I] retains the essential polyrythms of jazz while eschewing the atonal stuff that is so off-putting to many. IMO the baleful mournings of the tenor sax on 'Like Someone in Love' and 'Trane's Slo Blues' are worth the price of admission on their own. And, of course, the R. Van Gelder remasters are topnotch SQ.

Hey glad you have a long weekend too. The Amy Allison is not limited as far as I know. Her website is www.amyallisonmusic.com and the disc number is SPIT027.
It's a recording well worth seeking out. Apart from the crappy Smiths track Everyday is like Sunday. Why oh why? But in her defense she makes it her own. It was recorded in Scotland and released by Shoeshine records www.shoeshine.co.uk

Blasting into the weekend in atypical fashion with Hurt~Vol.1. I saw these guys live on St. Patrick's Day, and assumed that they were a very talented local act. Wrong. Evidently, the drummer is related to everyone in Hollywood whose ever touched a mixing board and the vocalist suffers from some type of Bible-belt oppression malaise. Both are apparent on this release. Dark, brooding, dynamic...

Tonight's lineup includes a first spin of McCoy Tyner ~ S/T with Stanley Clarke and Al Foster (Telarc DSD SACD) and Jim Hall with Joe Lovano, George Mraz, and Lewis Nash ~ Grand Slam (Telarc); and then on to a revisit with John Coltrane ~ Lush Life and Miles Davis ~ Kind of Blue.

OK, so a full two weeks after its posting, I finally get around to checking out Wooch's tribalfunkyfusionacidjazz livestream. Great stuff. I found myself with a hyper-extended chord and a set of headphones cleaning my kitchen at four in the morning. I swear. My kitchen thanks you Wooch.
I spent the rest of the night researching some of the less mainstream 'indie' releases you guys talk about with such frequency. I would have to say I found quite a bit about which to be positive (Calexico,Neko Case) and some stuff I probably won't be checking out... Anyway, it was a fun experience with the exception of the sleep deprivation.

Dave918, are you any closer to "cracking the nut" on your jazz journey; I can't imagine you haven't found a great deal to favor...

I think when you stand around singing , 'Teach O Teach Us How To Die', at Primary school its bound to warp you to some extent ..."

The release of Holy Love will confirm James Grants unquestionable talents and continues a vocation that has spanned two decades to make great music. Its time to listen.

bill-- You know,it is after a dozen years as a 'failed' guitarist who only mastered the technical elements of the instrument that I have recently embraced the concept of saying more with less. Knopfler does this, as do the traditional blues players I've been listening to lately. I think CS is the modern extension of all this. Santana is clearly a river I'll have to fjord soon. Former frontman of Blood Sweat and Tears,recorded live at the Opera House in Toronto last fall.He has put together an eleven piece jazz/rock fusion group.The set list is mostly BST standards but with some suprises thrown in.The band is smoking and David is in great voice although not quite where he was 35 years ago but hey,who is.
Its great to hear those songs freshly done again.

You might want to check some Bireli Lagrene, particularly his earlier works--very Djangoish with better sq. It's my understanding that they had several significant similarities, not the least of which being background and upbringing. Lagrene's earliest work in 1980/81 took factions of the guitar world by storm in terms of technique and composition. Later, he went on to play jazz/fusion with Jaco Pastorius.

Presumably, this is one of the series Woochifer was recommending several months ago in a SACD thread. This is easily one the best recorded pieces of music of any style I have heard. Having revisited it three times in less than a week, I am impressed again and again with its clarity and resolution. If you're into SACD and even remotely interested in classical, this one makes the short list.

I've never had great luck with Columbia Masterworks, but Stravinsky's Firebird Ballet Suite/Petrushka Ballet Suite is incredible. This mono LP was pressed between 1965-70. I'm starting to become a huge fan of Mono recordings. Salvation Army offer superb stuff if you are a Crate Digger. When was last time you had great deal of fun for spending $0.25 in last 12 months?

NS-Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks and Water Music performed by Boston Baroque and conducted by Martin Pearlman.
This is the second SACD from this gifted group I have purchased, and neither fails to deliver the goods...

Three-time Grammy nominee Boston Baroque was the first Baroque orchestra established in North America. Founded in 1973 as "Banchetto Musicale" by the American conductor and harpsichordist Martin Pearlman, The ensemble has been the vanguard of the period instrument field for almost thirty years, and was recently described by Stereo Review as ">>>Perhaps the outstanding period instrument ensemble in this country."

30th anniversary DSOM for $26 at a Virgin Mega Store. I can't believe they didnt try to charge over $40 for it, VMS usually try to to stick it in any open holes we got.

This record almost has no background noise. I enjoyed the hell out of it, but '73 pressings seem to sound more emotional. Also, I think it lacks dynamics compared to my 30+ year old copy.

I listened to Allan Sherman's comedy "Peter and the Comissar" on the drive into work. Hilarious! And interesting. Amidst the comedy and the music (Beethoven's Fifth done as a cha-cha, Brahms Lullaby as rock and Swan Lake as a blues), there is some relevant music business/social commentary as in one part the Big Chief Commissar, head of all the Commissar's on the committee that dictates what music is acceptable for public consumption, states:

"There is one fact that must be faced,
WE are the makes of public taste.
And let's have no talk about artistic freedom,
the public goes wherever WE lead 'em."

I wonder if Frank Zappa ever heard this music from 1964 that I understand did well on the "charts". Fiedler conducts the Boston Pops and a few jazz guys are also present. The tenor man does a nice Stan Getz impersonation during the bossa nova section. I found this CD in a cut-out bin but it appears to have been available from BMG as well as Collector's Choice.

Been really diggin' a 2LP set from King Curtis, covering his only two Prestige albums. Really great bluesy jazz stuff.

I like these 2 for one LPS sets from Prestige. I've got another that combines 2 albums on the label that Mulligan and Baker did together in a 2 LP set.

Also got a simliar 2 LP from that couple Ben Webster: Soulville and Ben Webster meets Oscar Peterson onto a 2 LP set.

Great LPs to look for to grab some great music more cheaply than finding a pair of the originals.

Pet Shop Boys - Fundamental plus Fundamentalism limited edition bonus remix CD (import)

Musically, it doesn't really branch out too far from their familiar 80s/90s electro/house sound (among their recent releases, only Bilingual tries to explore new musical areas), but thematically it takes their typically exuberant (and IMO brilliant) sense of irony and applies it to current events for the first time. ("I'm With Stupid" is a witty and not-so-thinly-veiled treatise on Tony Blair and Dubya under the guise of a love song featuring a guy explaining why he stays with a lover despite that lover being an utter moron)

As usual, they leave it up to outside producers and remixers to create the more current sound to accompany their album material.

Calexico/Iron and Wine ep In the Reins from '05 on vinyl - nice sounds for winding down on Sunday night. I'm definetly interested in checking out releases from both bands.

Listenend to Kings of Leon - Aha Shake Heartbreak earlier today. Sounds kinda like Spoon's Gimme Fiction. Cool guitar riffs and distorted tones. I like the white vinyl but it's a little noisy.

Picked up Best of G. Love and Special Sauce last week. I usually don't go for "Best of" or Greatest Hits, but G. Love is playing locally later this month and I wanted to test my memory from about 10 years ago. This is a fun cd. I'd say that 8 of the 11 tracks are strong and are worth multiple plays. The style is to my liking but I can see that it would be difficult to squeeze out more than 2 or 3 good albums. Jack Johnson joined G. Love & SS for an upbeat version of Johnson's "Rodeo Clowns" in 1999. Johnson recorded it again for one of his later albums but it doesn't have the same swagger. "Blues Music", "Cold Beverage", "Stepping Stones", and "Baby's Got Sauce" are in that classic Beck-like, Beastie Boys-funk vein from around '93 to '96. Fun stuff that reminds me of the days when I'd travel many miles to catch a live act - even on a week night!

The 7th is indeed a stellar performance and recording. If you haven't heard them already, I would also highly recommend the SF Symphony recordings of Mahler's 1st and 6th. The 6th in particular is a devastating performance that took place on September 12-14, 2001.

One of the great horn tandems in action with the then-22-year old trumpet prodigy Hubbard (this was only his second album) trading chops with the underappreciated Hank Mobley on tenor sax. Add a pre-Coltrane quartet McCoy Tyner and Paul Chambers to the mix, and there's quite a session playin'!

It's interesting because Thomas is very well known for his expertise with more modern composers like Copland, Ives, and Gershwin. The SFS (and the LA Phil) gets a lot of attention from east coast music critics because they include so many modern and less-oft-played composers in their programs. Just in the last year, I've been to concerts where the SFS program opened for Mahler's 5th with a modern minimalist composition similar to some of Philip Glass' work, and as a prelude to Orff's Carmina Burana played a soundtrack overture to some obscure Mexican movie from 60+ years ago -- an arrangement that required at least eight percussionists.

When the SFS announced that they would embark on the Mahler series, some people were concerned about whether they could pull it off, whether they could be focused and "serious" enough to handle some of the weightier arrangements that are in Mahler's works. Their monumental performance of Mahler's 6th (the "tragic" symphony) on 9/12/01 quickly doused any doubts. I'd seen the SFS perform that piece several years ago, before MTT took over as musical director, and the 2001 recording completely blew away what I remembered seeing from the SFS several years back. The other performances have been uniformly good, with occasional greatness (the recordings of 1st, 6th, and 7th; and I expect with the 5th as well if the CD is anything like the live recorded performance I attended last year)

As I mentioned, the SFS only has Mahler's 8th (the "symphony of a thousand") left to finish the complete cycle, but I am a bit concerned about the arrangement, having just seen the SFS perform that piece live a couple of months ago. They chose not to record it this time around, so it will be at least another two years before they do record that piece. This time around, they went with a downsized arrangement with less than 500 players total, but that's about all that will fit on the stage at Davies Hall for a public performance. Sir Georg Solti's landmark 1972 recording of Mahler's 8th with the Chicago Symphony used an oversized orchestra and more than 800 players, and recorded it in a large auditorium with no audience present. Hopefully, they'll find the answer by the time the tape starts rolling!

Aside from the performances, the recording quality has been excellent. These discs are the primary reason that I bought a SACD player, and it's been worthwhile. As great as the CD layer sounds, the two-channel SACD layer is better yet, while the 5.1 SACD layer takes you right up to the conductor's podium at Davies Symphony Hall.

This re-re-re-re press has been digitally mastered. I really hate records that have been altered from the orignal goodness, but I'm learning to digress.

Even worse is when I repurchase an album that I forgot I already had in my collection! It's happened to me a couple of times. First time was when Tower was having a sale on all of Fantasy Records' releases, which includes the entire Prestige jazz catalog. So, I went to town buying up a whole bunch of Prestige's limited edition K2 remasters (the same process that JVC uses on its excellent XRCD titles) from Trane, Miles, and Cannonball, only to find later on that I already had a K2 copy of Miles Davis' Cookin'.

Another album that I accidentally repurchased was Sonny Clark's Cool Struttin', which I bought on one of Classic Records' 96/24 high res PCM discs. Only after I cracked open the disc did I realize that I already had it in my collection -- Classic Records had accidentally included it with a mail order purchase a few months earlier, and I had forgotten about it! Oh well, they eventually got my money with that accident!

I haven't explored Lee Morgan all that much. My personal favorite hard bop album from that Blue Note era is probably Hank Mobley's Roll Call. Many of the same stellar supporting players from Freddie Hubbard's early albums, but that Mobley session absolutely smokes! I read on the All Music site that legendary jazz writer Leonard Feather (with whom I took a jazz history course in college -- amazing class) once referred to Hank Mobley as the "middleweight champion" among jazz saxophonists.
